If you need offer data, first establish that you are authorized to collect it. For your own products, Google documents Merchant Center feeds and product structured data as ways to provide product information to Google. For an authorized collection, preserve each observation’s query, market, time, and source context: a displayed price or seller is not a timeless fact.
Can you scrape Google Shopping results?
Technically, a browser can load pages and software can inspect what is rendered. That technical possibility is not permission. Google’s Search spam policies expressly identify “scraping results for rank-checking purposes or other types of automated access to Google Search conducted without express permission” as prohibited. Google’s Terms also prohibit using automated means to access content from its services in violation of machine-readable instructions on its pages, such as robots.txt.
Those rules do not settle every permission arrangement or legal question in every jurisdiction. Before collecting Google Shopping results, check the applicable service terms and machine-readable instructions, establish whether you have express permission, and get jurisdiction-specific legal advice if your use requires it. Do not assume that a publicly visible result, a low request rate, or a browser automation library makes collection authorized. This guide does not provide a recipe for evading access controls or scraping Google results without permission.
Google’s documented merchant data tools are a different thing: they let merchants share information about their own products with Google. The official material does not establish them as a public feed of arbitrary Shopping search results for third parties.

Choose the data source that matches your question

Google says Merchant Center participation is required for products to appear in the Shopping tab, and describes feeds and structured data as ways merchants can share product information. A product result may show price, availability, review ratings, shipping information, or other offer details, but the display depends on the Google surface and context. Google also says experiences can vary by country and device.
For your own products, use Merchant Center and structured data
Keep the feed and customer-facing page aligned
If you control the catalog, start with the source of truth in your commerce system. Keep product identifiers, titles, prices, availability, and relevant shipping details consistent across the product page, structured data, and Merchant Center feed. Google says values in markup should match what customers see. Merchant Center can use structured data for automatic item updates and website-crawl feeds, but automatic updates do not replace regular feed updates.
Do not treat an automatic update as an instant synchronization guarantee. Google says it does not guarantee when crawl-based changes will be processed. If price or stock changes often, use your regular feed-update process as the operational mechanism and treat crawled or displayed information as potentially lagging until checked.
Use structured data to describe the page, not to imitate a result page
Product structured data can help Google understand product price, discounts, shipping, and related information on a merchant’s own page. It should describe the actual offer visible to the customer. It is not a means to request every offer Google has indexed, and it does not give a third party a Shopping-result API.

Know what Google documents about StoreBot
Google’s StoreBot documentation describes Google’s own crawling of merchant product, cart, and checkout pages. The documented information includes product and shipping price, availability, coupon validity, shipping time, shipping countries, and payment methods. This explains Google’s merchant-page crawling; it does not grant other parties permission to crawl Shopping result pages or merchant sites.
For an authorized collection, define the record before collecting
If you have permission to observe a source—such as a merchant’s own catalog, an authorized partner feed, or another approved data source—decide what each record means. A price observation should represent what a particular source displayed in a particular context, rather than an assumed universal price.
- Collection context: timestamp, query or product identifier, country or market, language, device, and Google surface if relevant and authorized.
- Offer identity: product name and stable identifier where available, seller or merchant label, and the source or landing-page URL.
- Observed offer: displayed price and currency, availability, shipping details when visible, and any relevant discount or coupon wording.
- Provenance: how the record was obtained, the permission or source under which it was collected, and any parsing or normalization applied.
These are practical reproducibility fields, not an official Google schema. They matter because Google documents variation by country and device, and because product information can be out of sync while a merchant feed or page update is processed. Keep the raw observation separately from normalized values; for example, do not discard the original seller label when mapping it to an internal merchant ID.
Build a permitted merchant-catalog workflow
For a catalog you own or are authorized to process, the safest path is to use the system’s feed or export first. If you need to read information from your own product pages, use structured data or another documented catalog interface rather than relying on visual layout that may change. A basic workflow is:

- Confirm ownership and scope. Identify the pages or export you may process, permitted purposes, request limits, and any retention restrictions.
- Prefer a stable source. Use the merchant’s catalog export or feed when available. Use page markup only when it is part of an authorized workflow.
- Parse into a defined schema. Store product identity, offer fields, source URL, collection time, and parsing status; preserve original values for auditing.
- Validate against the visible offer. Check representative records against the customer-facing page, especially currency, sale pricing, inventory, and shipping.
- Monitor freshness and failures. Record when a source was last successfully updated. Do not silently treat missing or stale values as current prices or in-stock status.
For a permitted page collection, a browser can be useful when the page requires JavaScript to render. A browser screenshot, however, is only an image of what appeared; it does not itself provide structured product fields, prove that automated access is authorized, or resolve discrepancies between a page and a feed. Where you need machine-readable catalog records, use the merchant’s approved data source.
Common data-quality and implementation problems
The feed and page show different prices
First check whether the two values refer to the same currency, market, variant, promotion, and time. Google recommends aligning structured data and feed information with what customers see, but crawl-based changes are not guaranteed to be processed on a fixed schedule. Keep a timestamp and source for each value rather than overwriting one observation with another.
Availability or shipping details are missing
A result surface may not expose every field, and what appears depends on context. Store unavailable fields as unknown or absent, not as “no shipping” or “out of stock.” If you control the merchant page, verify the relevant data in the feed and structured markup and confirm that it matches the customer-facing offer.
A seller label does not identify a unique merchant
Retain the literal displayed label and the associated landing-page URL. Normalize sellers only after applying a documented matching rule; names can be ambiguous, and the available interfaces do not guarantee a fixed set of seller fields.

A page capture is blank or incomplete
For pages you are authorized to access, a blank capture can result from a failed load, delayed rendering, or content that did not become visible before capture. Check the page manually, wait for a stable product element, and record failures rather than converting them into empty product records. Do not use capture or automation to bypass Google’s restrictions.
You need historical comparisons
Save time-stamped observations with their market and query context. A current page cannot establish what was displayed previously, and a single observed price should not be presented as a continuing price without repeated observations from a permitted source.

FAQ
Does a screenshot contain usable product data?
It contains pixels, not reliable structured offer records. For fields such as price, availability, and merchant identity, use an authorized structured feed or parseable source and validate the results.
Is a Shopping result the same thing as a merchant’s catalog?
No. A result is a contextual display; a merchant catalog is data controlled by the seller. The former reflects what a Google surface showed, while the latter is the merchant’s own product record.
Where can I learn general scraping techniques?
O’Reilly lists Ryan Mitchell’s Web Scraping with Python, 3rd Edition as an intermediate-to-advanced technical book published in February 2024. It covers general scraping topics, but it is not a Google Shopping-specific implementation guide or a current reference for Google’s policies.
