You generally should not scrape Google Images by sending automated queries to Google Search without express permission. Google classifies that as machine-generated traffic and says it violates its spam policies and Terms of Service. For a few images, use Google Images manually to find candidates, then check usage rights on each image’s original hosting page. Developers who are already Custom Search JSON API customers can use its documented image search, but Google says the API is closed to new customers and existing customers must transition by January 1, 2027.
Can you scrape Google Images?
Not as an ordinary, unsupported script that repeatedly requests Google Search results. Google Search Central says automated access to Google Search without express permission, including scraping results, violates its spam policies and Terms of Service. Google explains: “Machine-generated traffic consumes resources and interferes with our ability to best serve users.” Its statement that “Such activities violate our spam policies and the Google Terms of Service” refers to the machine-generated traffic it describes immediately before it, not to ordinary manual image research. Google Search Central’s machine-generated traffic policy sets out the boundary.
Google’s Terms of Service also address automated access that violates machine-readable instructions and warn against using its services or content in ways that violate intellectual-property or privacy rights. The sources do not establish a supported, stable Google Images page structure for a scraper. Avoid treating page selectors or endpoints as a permitted or dependable interface.

For ordinary research or a small number of images, use Google Images as a discovery tool, not as proof that an image is free to reuse.
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
- Search manually. Enter a descriptive query in Google Images. Use the available interface filters to narrow the candidates. Interface controls can change.
- Open the original hosting page. Treat a result thumbnail as a lead, then visit the page that hosts the image. Google says image previews are selected automatically; a preview or image URL does not establish the license. See Google’s guidance on finding images.
- Check the actual terms. On the original page, look for the license and verify whether your intended use is allowed, whether attribution is required, whether commercial use is restricted, and whether modifications are permitted. A rights filter is only a discovery aid, not a license grant.
- Resolve uncertainty before using the image. If the license is missing or unclear, seek permission from the rights holder or choose an image with clear terms. Google’s Terms do not remove third-party rights.
- Keep a provenance record. For your own records, save the original page URL, identified creator or rights holder, license text, date checked, and any required attribution. This is practical recordkeeping, not a Google-prescribed legal checklist.
Is there a Google Images API?
Google’s Custom Search JSON API documents image search, but it is not an option a new customer can sign up for: Google says the API is unavailable to new customers. Existing customers must transition by January 1, 2027. Check Google’s current API overview before relying on its availability or terms.
The following route is for existing eligible customers with a configured Programmable Search Engine and API key. It is not a method for scraping the consumer results page.

Existing-customer allowance and sunset
Google’s overview states that existing customers receive 100 queries per day at no charge; additional requests cost $5 per 1,000, up to 10,000 queries per day, during the remaining availability period. These figures apply to existing API customers, not new users, and are subject to the announced transition deadline of January 1, 2027. Confirm current terms with Google before budgeting or building a workflow around the API.
Why direct browser scraping is a poor workflow
- Policy risk: automated Google Search queries without express permission fall within the machine-generated traffic restriction described by Google.
- Fragility: the cited documentation does not promise stable page markup, selectors, or endpoints for consumer Google Images results.
- Rights confusion: a thumbnail, source URL, or search filter is not the image license. Reuse must be checked with the rights holder or license terms.
- Better fit: manual discovery suits a small number of images; eligible existing API customers should use Google’s documented API rather than automate the consumer page.
