ASOS customer terms expressly prohibit automated extraction (“screen scraping”), and commercial use requires express permission. A compliant project starts with authorization, a narrowly defined schema, and operational controls—not with selectors, proxies, or CAPTCHA bypasses.
What ASOS permits—and what it does not
ASOS’s customer terms state: “you’re not allowed to use automated systems or software to extract data from our Website (AKA ‘screen scraping’).” That is a contractual restriction, not merely a technical challenge. Normal personal browsing does not grant permission to run a crawler, browser automation job, or search-results scraper.
The terms also say website content may be stored, printed, and displayed for personal use. They separately state: “You are not allowed to use any part of the Website for commercial purposes unless you have our express permission.” If your use involves a business dashboard, resale, advertising, market analysis, or a customer-facing service, obtain written permission before collecting or redistributing results.
ASOS’s robots.txt lists selected disallowed paths and sitemap locations. It is useful operational guidance, but following robots.txt does not create contractual authorization. Treat the terms, robots.txt, privacy policy, and your written agreement as separate requirements.

Permission-first workflow for ASOS search data
1. Define the purpose and fields
Write down why you need the data, which markets you will cover, how often it must be refreshed, and who will see it. Keep the initial schema to public catalog attributes that are necessary for that purpose.
- Product-page URL and retrieval timestamp
- Product name, brand, category, color, and displayed price where authorized
- Availability or sale status, with the market and currency recorded
- Search term, page or position context, if ranking information is expressly permitted
Do not silently add account information, customer identifiers, search histories, behavioral profiles, or other personal data. More fields create more privacy, security, and authorization obligations.
2. Check the applicable rules immediately before implementation
Review the ASOS terms for the country or region you will access, the current robots.txt file, and the privacy policy. Record the access date, market or locale, requested paths, user-agent requirements, and any restrictions that affect your plan. Terms and website services can change, so an old copy is not a production authorization.
3. Request written authorization or an approved feed
Ask ASOS for written permission or an official API/data feed. Your project record should identify:

- Permitted domains, countries, locales, and URL paths
- Every field you may collect, including whether ranking, prices, images, and availability are included
- Maximum request rate, concurrency, daily volume, and permitted collection window
- Retention period, deletion procedure, and security requirements
- Whether internal use, publication, resale, or redistribution is allowed
- Required identification, contact details, and a stop or suspension process
An email that merely acknowledges your question is not the same as permission. Preserve the actual approval and any amendments with the deployment configuration.
4. Build conservatively after approval
Use the lowest request rate that meets the approved freshness target. Cache responses, deduplicate product URLs, and apply exponential backoff for transient failures. Identify your client as required by the agreement, and provide a responsible contact. Add an immediate stop switch so an operator can halt every worker without redeploying the application.

Never bypass a CAPTCHA, bot check, login barrier, paywall, access-control rule, or robots directive. A proxy service or CAPTCHA-solving provider does not turn prohibited extraction into authorized extraction.
5. Minimize, validate, and document
Validate every record against the permitted schema before writing it to storage. Keep provenance: source URL, market, locale, retrieval time, query, parser version, and authorization identifier. Prices, promotions, stock, and search ranking are volatile; a record is a time-stamped observation, not a permanent fact.

Design choices to settle before coding

Implementation pattern (only after approval)
Keep the collector separated from parsing and storage. A safe sequence is:
- Load the approved configuration (domains, paths, fields, limits, and stop flag).
- Read from the cache before making a request.
- Queue only URLs and queries covered by the authorization.
- Enforce a global rate limiter and concurrency cap shared by all workers.
- Request one page, record status and timing, then back off on transient errors.
- Parse only the approved fields; discard everything else immediately.
- Validate types and required values, attach provenance, and write the record.
- Stop on authorization expiry, robots change, repeated access denials, or an operator command.
Do not hard-code undocumented CSS selectors, endpoint names, pagination behavior, or request limits. Those details can change and are not established by the public materials cited here. If ASOS supplies an API or feed, use its documented schema and authentication instead of reproducing website behavior.
Privacy boundaries
ASOS’s privacy policy says it processes search and browsing behavior to personalize products and services. That makes behavioral information materially different from a public product attribute. Avoid collecting account data, identifiers, browsing history, or query histories unless your authorization and a lawful basis specifically cover them.

The policy also describes matching purchases to links from affiliates who introduced customers or promoted products. That indicates affiliate attribution exists, but it does not establish a public affiliate program’s current terms. Verify the program, traffic-source rules, disclosure obligations, and tracking conditions directly before planning monetization.
Troubleshooting compliant jobs
“We received a 403 or an access-denied page.”
Stop retrying automatically. Check whether the path, market, user agent, and time window are covered by the written approval. Contact ASOS if the response is unexpected. Do not rotate proxies or attempt to evade the control.
“The parser suddenly returns empty fields.”
Save the raw response permitted by your agreement, compare it with the last known schema, and disable the affected field rather than guessing new selectors. Ask ASOS for a feed or schema update if the page structure changed.
“Prices or stock disagree with the site.”
Compare market, currency, locale, retrieval timestamp, and cache age. These values change frequently. Preserve both the observed value and its timestamp; never present an old snapshot as current availability.
“The job is too slow.”
Measure queue wait, network time, parsing time, and cache-hit rate. Improve deduplication and caching first. Request a higher approved limit from ASOS rather than increasing concurrency unilaterally.
“We need to stop immediately.”
Trip the global stop flag, revoke worker credentials if necessary, preserve logs, and notify the authorization contact. Record which URLs were requested and which records were written so you can delete or reprocess them accurately.
