YouTube does not provide a documented feature that uploads a JSON file and applies playlist edits at scheduled times. To schedule YouTube Live playlist changes with JSON, use the file as input for your own script or job runner: it reads each scheduled action and calls the YouTube Data API. Schedule the live broadcast separately in YouTube Studio or through the Live Streaming API.
Understand the two schedules
A scheduled live broadcast and a scheduled playlist edit are separate operations. YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room schedules the broadcast; the YouTube Data API’s playlistItems methods change playlist membership or item position. A script, job runner, or other external scheduler supplies the timing for those API calls. The documented YouTube interfaces do not make a broadcast schedule automatically apply playlist edits, nor do they define a native JSON schedule-file format.

What you need before building the JSON workflow
- A YouTube playlist you are authorized to modify, and its playlist ID.
- The video ID for each video to add. For changes to or removal of an existing playlist entry, retain that entry’s playlist-item ID as well as the playlist and video identifiers.
- An OAuth setup authorized for the channel or account that can edit the target playlist. The insert method accepts scopes including
youtubeandyoutube.force-ssl; choose an appropriate scope for your operation. - A scheduler capable of running your script at the intended times. Its hosting, timing precision, and configuration depend on the scheduler you choose.
Choose a JSON format for your scheduler
YouTube documents playlist-item request fields, not a standard schedule-file schema. The following is an illustrative format you can adapt; it is not a YouTube upload format. Use an explicit time-zone offset in each timestamp so the runner does not have to guess what local time means.

}The example dates are illustrative. Define your own accepted timestamp format, validation rules, and action names in the runner. Before sending a request, check that required IDs are present, the action is recognized, and a move’s position is a non-negative zero-based index. Avoid putting OAuth credentials or other secrets in the JSON file.

Implement the playlist changes
- Identify the targets. Record the playlist ID and video IDs. For an existing playlist entry, obtain and store its playlist-item ID; an item ID is not the same thing as a video ID.
- Authorize the API client. Configure OAuth for the account with permission to edit the target content. Keep credentials in an appropriate secret store for your chosen environment, not alongside the schedule data.
- Parse and validate each due action. Have your scheduler start the runner at the specified time. The runner should parse the JSON, select due actions, validate fields and identifiers, and avoid applying the same action twice if a retry or duplicate run is possible. Idempotency and retry behavior are implementation decisions, not a YouTube schedule-file requirement.
- Insert an item when the action is
insert. Send an authorized POST request to/youtube/v3/playlistItems. The request body needssnippet.playlistIdandsnippet.resourceId. For a video, set the resource kind toyoutube#videoand supply the video ID. YouTube lists a quota cost of 50 units for this method. - Move an item when the action is
move. UseplaylistItems.updatewith the playlist-item ID,snippet.playlistId, andsnippet.resourceId; setsnippet.positionto the desired zero-based location. The playlist must use Manual ordering for an explicit position to be valid. YouTube lists a quota cost of 50 units for this method. - Delete an item when the action is
delete. CallplaylistItems.deletefor the playlist-item ID. Confirm that the intended playlist entry is the one being removed before the runner executes the action. - Record outcomes. Log the action, execution time, API response or error, and enough identifying information to diagnose a failure. Test with a noncritical playlist before relying on the automation for a public event.
Keep broadcast scheduling separate
To schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, go to Manage, select Schedule stream, then create a new stream or reuse settings. You can also implement broadcast scheduling with the Live Streaming API’s broadcast resource, which has scheduled start-time fields. Neither route documents a connection that triggers your JSON-driven playlist edits, so plan and verify those jobs separately.
YouTube Help notes that a scheduled stream may show up in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming. Communicate the stream schedule and any playlist changes to viewers, and allow for the possibility that the broadcast listing and playlist updates are not synchronized automatically.

Verify, monitor, and troubleshoot
- An item was not added: Check that the runner executed the due action, that OAuth authorization belongs to an account allowed to modify the playlist, and that the playlist ID and video resource fields are valid.
- A move request fails: Confirm the playlist is set to Manual ordering, that the supplied playlist-item ID identifies an existing entry, and that the resource and playlist identifiers match that entry. Positions are zero-based.
- An item was not removed: Check that the delete action uses the playlist-item ID, not merely the video ID, and inspect the API response recorded by the runner.
- An edit ran at the wrong time or more than once: Review the scheduler’s timezone and timestamp parsing, then check whether retries or duplicate job executions can repeat an action. YouTube does not specify those runner behaviors.
- The broadcast is scheduled but the playlist did not change: Treat these as independent workflows. Check the external job runner and API call; scheduling the broadcast does not itself schedule playlist edits.
- API calls stop succeeding as expected: Inspect authorization errors and quota usage. The insert and update references each list 50 units per call; account for that operational cost when planning repeated edits.
