What you need before scheduling a capture
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 machine that is available when the task is due to run. Microsoft documents
schtasks.exefor both platforms; a machine that is off cannot be assumed to capture at the scheduled time. Missed-run behavior depends on task settings. Microsoft’s schtasks commands - A script that can navigate to the site and write a screenshot to a known location.
- A chosen run account with permission to access the script, browser binaries, and output directory.
- A decision about whether the task needs a visible browser window or can run headlessly.
Make a screenshot script work manually first
Playwright’s Page API supports navigating to a URL and saving a screenshot, including a full-page capture. Install Playwright and the browser binaries that match its installed version before scheduling the script; Playwright notes that browser versions are tied to Playwright versions. On Windows, its documented default browser cache is under %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalms-playwright. Reinstall the browser binaries as needed after upgrading Playwright. For a Node.js project with Playwright installed, a minimal capture script could look like this:

})();Replace the example URL and output path. The code illustrates the workflow; check it with your installed Windows, Node.js, and Playwright versions and run it manually before creating a task. Ensure the destination folder exists and that the same account you intend to schedule can write to it. If the site never reaches network idle, choose a different navigation or wait strategy appropriate to that site.

Choose headless or visible browser execution
Headless for unattended captures
Playwright’s headless mode opens no visible browser window, which suits a task that only needs to save an image. It avoids relying on a user watching an interactive session, but does not guarantee that the resulting pixels will match a visible browser run.
Visible browser for interactive sessions
If you need to see or interact with the browser, configure the task to run in a user context where an interactive session is available. Do not use the System account expecting a window: Microsoft states, “The System account doesn’t have interactive logon rights. Browser version, operating system, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendered pixels. Keep these conditions consistent when comparing screenshots, and test in the environment that will run the scheduled task. Playwright visual comparisons

Create a recurring or one-time scheduled task
You can use the Task Scheduler graphical interface or the schtasks.exe command-line tool; Microsoft describes them as interchangeable ways to perform scheduling operations. The command-line form makes the trigger and launch command explicit. Configure it in Task Scheduler instead
- Open Task Scheduler and create a task.
- Set a trigger for the desired one-time or recurring time.
- Set an action to start the runtime executable, such as Node.js, and supply the script path as its argument. Use full paths rather than relying on the task’s default directory.
- Choose the account and whether a user session is required; confirm it can read the script and browser installation and write to the output folder.
- Save the task, then run it on demand and inspect the output before relying on the schedule.

A scheduled process may not start in the same working directory or under the same user profile as a manually launched script. Use explicit paths for the runtime, script, browser installation where applicable, and screenshot output. Confirm that the chosen task identity can read the needed files and write to the destination. Prefer a deliberate output directory such as C:Screenshots rather than an implicit relative path. If the task runs under another account, test that account’s access to the directory and ensure the directory exists before capture.

Yes. Use a one-time trigger, such as /sc ONCE with a start time, or create a one-time trigger in Task Scheduler.
Can a scheduled capture run without anyone logged in?
