For finite batch work, a Cloud Run job may fit better than a request-response service.
How the scheduled screenshot pipeline works
There are two jobs in this setup: Cloud Scheduler triggers work at the chosen time, and your browser automation code performs the capture. A typical flow is:
- Cloud Scheduler sends a scheduled HTTP request.
- An authenticated Cloud Run service receives it and launches Chromium.
- Playwright or Puppeteer opens the target page and captures an image.
- Your service writes the image to a file, returns image bytes, or stores it in Cloud Storage.

Choose a Cloud Run service or job
For a recurring capture of one site, an authenticated HTTP Cloud Run service is the shortest path: Scheduler calls it, and it responds when the request is handled. For finite batch work, consider a Cloud Run job: its container performs work and exits, and the Google codelab demonstrates uploading Puppeteer screenshots to Cloud Storage.

Choose based on whether the work is request-response or batch-oriented, whether URLs should be processed as separate tasks, where results will be stored, and how you want failures retried. Google’s documentation does not establish a universal workload size or runtime threshold for switching from a service to a job.
Build the capture endpoint
Deploy an HTTP Cloud Run service or function that accepts a capture request. Include Chromium in the container and use Playwright or Puppeteer to navigate to the requested page and take the screenshot. Google’s Cloud Run browser-automation guidance covers the browser setup considerations: Cloud Run browser automation.
Playwright’s Page API supports viewport or full-page screenshots, output to a file or image buffer, and PNG, JPEG, or WebP formats. Decide what the endpoint returns: a file response can work for a caller that immediately consumes the image, while an image saved to Cloud Storage is more useful when captures need to persist independently of the request.

For Cloud Storage output, grant the service identity only the access it needs to write to the destination bucket. Keep target URLs and any credentials out of public request parameters; validate which URLs the endpoint is allowed to capture, particularly if callers can submit arbitrary URLs.
Create the Cloud Scheduler HTTP job
- Deploy the capture endpoint to Cloud Run and note its URL.
- Create a service account for Scheduler invocations and grant it the permission needed to invoke the Cloud Run target.
- Create a Cloud Scheduler job with an HTTP target set to the endpoint URL. Choose a cron-compatible schedule and the time zone in which that schedule should be interpreted.
- Configure the target authentication as OIDC and select the service account. Google recommends OIDC for HTTP targets such as Cloud Run; OAuth is generally used when the target is a Google API.
- Set the request method and any body or headers your endpoint expects. Test a manual invocation and confirm that it produces the expected image before relying on the schedule.

Make repeated runs safe
Cloud Scheduler provides at-least-once delivery, so a scheduled execution can rarely be delivered more than once. A handler that blindly creates a new object on every invocation can therefore leave duplicate captures.

Use the job name and the X-CloudScheduler-ScheduleTime header to identify the scheduled execution, and make storage writes idempotent where practical. For example, derive an object key from the job and scheduled time so a retry for the same scheduled run overwrites or reuses the same result rather than creating another file. Google explains delivery behavior in Manage cron jobs.
Set timeouts and retry behavior deliberately
Cloud Scheduler’s HTTP target attempt deadline defaults to three minutes and can be configured from 15 seconds to 30 minutes. Set the endpoint’s own request timeout and Scheduler’s attempt deadline to accommodate navigation, rendering, screenshot generation, and storage upload. A mismatch can make Scheduler report failure even when the target completed successfully. Do not let a request wait indefinitely for a slow page. Set a navigation timeout in the browser code, handle navigation or capture errors, and return an appropriate HTTP status so Scheduler can apply the retry behavior you configured. If the task regularly exceeds the HTTP attempt window, reconsider whether it should run as batch work in a Cloud Run job.

Where screenshots are saved
The destination is determined by your capture worker, not by Scheduler. Playwright can save to a path or provide screenshot bytes; your service can return those bytes in the HTTP response or upload them to Cloud Storage. For scheduled captures that need to remain available after the invocation ends, Cloud Storage is a practical destination. Google’s Cloud Run jobs codelab demonstrates Puppeteer screenshots uploaded there.
Common problems and fixes
- Scheduler runs, but the endpoint returns 401 or 403: confirm the job uses OIDC, the selected service account has invocation permission for the Cloud Run target, and the token audience matches the endpoint configuration.
- The request times out: compare browser navigation and service execution time with the Scheduler attempt deadline. Increase the deadline within its documented limits, or shorten the capture work; use a job for suitable finite batch processing.
- Images appear more than once: account for at-least-once delivery. Use the scheduled time and job identity to make writes idempotent.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: verify Chromium launches in the deployed container, the page is reachable from the service, and the handler waits for the page state or element needed before capturing.
- The schedule runs at an unexpected local time: check the time zone configured on the Scheduler job as well as the cron expression.
- The endpoint reports an error after the image was saved: review the interaction between the service response and Scheduler deadline. A completed side effect does not guarantee Scheduler received a successful response, so idempotent writes are important.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Cloud Scheduler take a screenshot by itself?
No. It triggers an HTTP target; your Cloud Run worker must run the browser and capture the page.
Can I schedule screenshots of several URLs?
Yes. Have the endpoint process a defined URL list or invoke separate tasks. For finite batch work, compare a Cloud Run job with an HTTP service based on task organization, output storage, and retry needs.
