Playwright plus GitHub Actions is one practical do-it-yourself setup; it can run on a recurring cadence, but a scheduled run is not guaranteed to start at an exact minute.
Keep the three jobs distinct: the script captures; the scheduler triggers; the archive stores and presents the evidence. That separation makes it easier to troubleshoot missed runs, inconsistent images, and client access.
Decide what each scheduled capture must prove
Agree with the client on the pages, capture dimensions, cadence, and what portion of each page should be recorded before writing the script. A screenshot is useful evidence only when reviewers know which state it represents.
- Pages: list exact URLs, including relevant paths and query parameters.
- Viewport: set width and height so captures are comparable over time.
- Capture area: choose the visible viewport, a full-page image, or a specific page element.
- Cadence: select an interval that matches the approval process, such as after each release or on a recurring weekday.
- State: note any expected login, consent, or other page conditions the script must handle.
Use stable names that identify the project, page, viewport, and capture date. Keep a manifest alongside the images with the URL, timestamp and timezone, viewport, browser/version, and deployment identifier when available. These conventions are practical recommendations, not requirements imposed by Playwright or GitHub.

Capture pages with Playwright
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in the project that will run the archive. The following Node.js example takes one viewport screenshot per URL, waits for the page’s load event, and uses a date-based filename. It is a starting point: choose and test a readiness condition that matches each site rather than assuming one wait rule will work everywhere.

}Replace the example URLs and page names with the approved list. For a full-page image, set fullPage: true; for a single component, use Playwright’s locator screenshot method, such as await page.locator('.approval-target').screenshot({ path: 'screenshots/target.png' }). The locator must match the intended element.
Page readiness is site-specific. Dynamic content, web fonts, consent overlays, and animations can change what appears in a capture. A load event alone may not mean that a page’s important content is ready. Add a wait for a stable selector or another site-specific condition when appropriate, and avoid arbitrary long delays unless testing shows they are needed.
For visual comparisons, keep the environment consistent. Playwright notes that screenshots can differ with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Use the same browser and runtime configuration for scheduled captures and any baseline comparison.

Run the script on a recurring schedule with GitHub Actions
GitHub Actions scheduled workflows use POSIX cron and run against the latest commit on the default branch. GitHub allows a minimum five-minute interval, but this is not a precise-time guarantee: scheduled runs can be delayed during high load. GitHub specifically advises avoiding the start of an hour where possible because of load around that time. Scheduled workflows in public repositories are automatically disabled after 60 days of repository inactivity.
For example, a workflow scheduled at 17:23 UTC every weekday can be saved as .github/workflows/capture.yml:

retention-days: 30Commit the workflow and script to the repository’s default branch. The cron time is UTC; GitHub Actions does not make it a client-local-time appointment. Use workflow_dispatch to run a manual capture for testing or an out-of-cycle approval request.
The example requests 30-day artifact retention, matching the retention value in Playwright’s CI example. GitHub documents a 90-day default retention for build logs and artifacts, subject to repository, organization, or enterprise settings. Neither setting is a permanent archive guarantee: decide where long-term copies belong and configure retention to match the client’s recordkeeping needs.

Store the screenshots so a client can approve them
An Actions artifact can make files available from a workflow run, but an approval archive also needs a deliberate review and access model. Choose a stable, access-controlled destination, then tell reviewers where to find captures and how to approve, request a recapture, or comment.
- Keep a record of the capture timestamp with timezone, URL, viewport, browser/version, and deployment or build identifier when available.
- Use filenames or folders that group files by client/project and page as well as capture date.
- Restrict access to client-sensitive screenshots. Playwright’s CI documentation advises using trusted artifact stores or encrypting uploaded reports and traces.
- Export or copy files to storage whose retention and access settings meet the client’s needs; do not rely on a temporary workflow artifact as the only record.
The reviewed documentation does not define a universal client approval archive or access policy, so agree on those details for the specific project.
Decide whether an archive also needs visual review
A timestamped archive answers “what did the page look like then?” Visual regression review answers “what changed from the approved baseline?” Playwright provides screenshot assertions for comparison, while Percy documents a Playwright integration. Add comparison and a way to discuss differences only if reviewers need those functions; preserving images alone does not provide them.
For a third-party review workflow, verify its current access controls, retention, export options, comparison behavior, and client comment process before relying on it. The available product documentation establishes the Playwright and Percy integration points but does not establish a universal approval process.

Troubleshoot inconsistent or missing captures
The scheduled run did not start at the expected minute
GitHub warns that scheduled workflows can be delayed during high load, especially around the beginning of an hour. Treat cron as a recurring trigger rather than an exact-time clock; avoid minute zero and use the workflow run history to check whether a run eventually started.
A screenshot is blank or missing page content
Check the run logs for navigation timeouts or script errors, then confirm that the URL is reachable from the runner and that the page has reached the state you intended to capture. If content loads asynchronously, wait for a meaningful selector or other page-specific condition instead of relying only on the load event.

Images differ between runs without an intentional site change
Compare browser version, operating system/runtime, viewport, headless setting, and page readiness behavior. Rendering may vary across host environments and browser versions; keep the environment fixed when images are intended to be compared.
Old captures are no longer available
Check artifact retention settings and repository or organization policies. Copy approval records to an archive with an appropriate retention period rather than assuming workflow artifacts will remain indefinitely.
The client cannot access the files
Verify the archive destination’s permissions and provide the client with the intended access path. A workflow artifact is associated with its run; it is not, by itself, a complete client-facing approval process.
