Use archivebox schedule to create a recurring import in current ArchiveBox versions. Choose an interval alias such as daily or a cron expression; when archivebox server is running, its built-in orchestrator queues the scheduled crawl when it is due. A separate host cron job or scheduler container is not required for this current server-managed workflow.
Create a recurring schedule
Run the command from your ArchiveBox collection context and provide a URL, feed, or another supported import path. For example, to import a feed daily while limiting crawl depth:
archivebox schedule --every=daily --depth=1 https://example.com/feed.xmlThe official scheduled-archiving guide also accepts cron expressions. This example schedules a run every six hours:
archivebox schedule --every='0 */6 * * *' https://example.com/feed.xmlUse the actual URL or feed you want to archive. The example domain is illustrative; whether a third-party site permits access and renders successfully depends on that site.

Choose the interval
Current documentation lists aliases including minute, hour, day, week, month, year, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly, as well as cron expressions. Confirm supported flags and aliases with the help for your installed version before building automation around them.
Inspect or run schedules
Use the schedule commands documented for the current release:
archivebox schedule --showThe current guide also documents --run-all to enqueue enabled schedules immediately, --clear to clear schedules, and --foreground to run the global orchestrator outside archivebox server. Review the installed version’s command help before using these options.

How scheduled captures run
Current ArchiveBox documentation describes schedules stored in its database. The schedule command creates a schedule and a sealed template crawl. When the global orchestrator is running, it monitors enabled schedules and queues a crawl once its due time arrives. That queued work then follows the normal processing path for work submitted through the UI or API.

For recurring work, create a schedule explicitly and make sure an orchestrator is running.
With ArchiveBox server
The current documented default is to run archivebox server and let its built-in orchestrator handle enabled schedules. The project says that, with the server running, you no longer need host cron, user crontabs or a separate archivebox_scheduler container. With Docker Compose
The current Compose flow supports creating a schedule with a one-off command. For example:
docker compose run --rm archivebox schedule --every=weekly --depth=1 https://example.com/feed.xmlOnce the main server is running, its orchestrator is responsible for future due runs; the documented current flow does not require a dedicated scheduler container. The image repository also documents this form for adding a daily schedule to the running service:

Control what each crawl follows
Scheduling determines when an import is queued; it does not guarantee that every linked page will be captured. The official examples use --depth=1, and the guide describes URL allow/deny list configuration to control which linked pages are followed. Set the depth and URL rules for the scope you intend to preserve, and account for site access restrictions or pages that fail to render.
Plan for archive storage
ArchiveBox can save snapshots in multiple formats, including original HTML, CSS and JavaScript; single-file HTML; screenshots; PDFs; WARC files; titles; article text; favicons; and headers. Snapshot contents are stored as ordinary files. Repeated crawls therefore add files to the collection over time, so monitor the space available to the archive.
The Docker deployment guidance says persistent data includes both the database and the archive. It recommends reliable local storage for the database and browser profiles, while describing remote storage mounts for /data/archive. That is deployment guidance, not a requirement to buy an external drive or use a particular storage provider. Current scheduling versus older cron recipes
Older ArchiveBox 0.7.4 documentation described using a system task scheduler such as cron, at or systemd to poll imports. Current project documentation instead describes database-backed schedules handled by the running server’s orchestrator. These are version-specific approaches, not interchangeable instructions: check your installed ArchiveBox version before adopting a legacy cron recipe. The historical ArchiveBox 0.7.4 documentation is useful for understanding older setups, not as the current default.
Troubleshoot missed or unexpected runs
- A schedule exists but does not run: confirm that an orchestrator is active. In the current server-managed setup, run
archivebox server; alternatively, the current guide documentsarchivebox schedule --foregroundfor running the global orchestrator outside the server. - The schedule command rejects an option: compare the command with the help and documentation for your installed version. Compose image versions may use different syntax; do not assume flags from a different release apply.
- A run occurs immediately or at an unexpected interval: inspect the enabled schedules with
archivebox schedule --showand verify the interval alias or cron expression. The documented cron example is0 */6 * * *. - The crawl misses linked pages: review
--depthand your URL allow/deny rules. A schedule does not override scope limits or guarantee that an external site will allow or render every page. - The collection grows faster than expected: review how often schedules run, how many URLs each import follows, and the formats being saved; snapshots include more than a screenshot alone.
