To capture a website on a recurring schedule, either configure a schedule in a screenshot service that supports one, or have an external scheduler—such as cron, CI, or a serverless timer—call a screenshot API at the interval you choose. A managed schedule can keep cadence, run history, and notifications together; an external scheduler gives you more control over timing and integrations, but you must handle retries, storage, and duplicate runs.

Choose who owns the schedule

Approach Where cadence is configured Best fit What you operate
Managed schedule In the screenshot provider’s dashboard or schedule API Recurring captures with vendor-provided history, notifications, or change rules Provider-specific schedule settings, quota, retention, and delivery behavior
External scheduler In cron, a CI workflow, a serverless timer, or an automation platform Captures tied to deployments or an existing workflow, or when you want control of timing Retries, alerts, storage, duplicate prevention, and API credentials

Allscreenshots documents dashboard scheduling and POST /v1/schedules. Snapshot Site describes external triggers, including cron, CI, serverless timers, and automation platforms. These are examples of different designs, not interchangeable API standards: confirm the selected provider’s current endpoints and accepted schedule fields.

Plan the capture before setting its cadence

Define the target and rendered state

Choose the exact URL or URL set, and decide whether you need a full page or a selected element. Fix the viewport or width, image format, and wait condition as well. For authenticated or stateful pages, check whether the screenshot API supports the required authentication and page-state setup. A recurring job that only stores a URL can produce inconsistent results if the page is captured before it finishes rendering or under changing browser settings.

Cloudflare’s screenshot endpoint accepts a URL or HTML and renders page HTML and JavaScript before taking a screenshot. That describes its capture mechanism; the cited endpoint documentation does not itself prescribe a recurring scheduler.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose cadence and timezone deliberately

Schedule syntax varies by provider. Allscreenshots documents hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly aliases, or a six-field cron expression with a timezone. Another provider documents named snapshot sets with hourly, six-hour, daily, weekly, or no recurring schedule. Do not assume that a cron string, timezone, or schedule field accepted by one provider works in another. Check how the provider interprets daylight-saving changes and the time zone associated with the job.

Decide how changes should be handled

If the purpose is visual monitoring, decide whether every capture should be delivered or only meaningful changes. Image differences can be noisy: Allscreenshots notes that ads or live counters may trigger change detection, and documents sensitivity controls and hiding elements as mitigations. If the target has dynamic areas, consider hiding them or excluding them from the comparison where supported.

Set up a managed recurring schedule

A managed schedule places the cadence in the screenshot service. Allscreenshots documents both dashboard configuration and an API method. Its example includes provider-specific fields for a name, URL, schedule, capture settings, change-only delivery, a difference threshold, email destination, failure alert, automatic pause count, and retention days. These names and controls are not universal; consult your chosen provider’s documentation before adapting the example.

  1. Configure the target and capture settings. Set the URL and options such as full-page capture and wait conditions. Allscreenshots’ example uses fullPage, waitFor, and waitUntil; do not assume other APIs use those parameter names.
  2. Set a supported cadence and timezone. Use the provider’s documented preset or schedule expression, and verify its timezone semantics.
  3. Run a manual capture. Check that the page is fully rendered and that the resulting image covers the intended content before enabling recurrence.
  4. Configure delivery and failure behavior. Decide whether to deliver every run or only changes, where alerts should go, and whether the service can pause a failing schedule.
  5. Check quota and retention. Confirm how runs are counted, how long images and history are kept, and whether the provider supports export before relying on it as an archive.

For example, Allscreenshots says its schedules count against its monthly screenshot quota. Treat that as a provider-specific billing rule, not a general rule for screenshot APIs.

Run captures with an external scheduler

With an external scheduler, the scheduler triggers an ordinary capture request. The exact request depends on the API you select. Snapshot Site describes this pattern for cron, CI, serverless timers, and automation platforms, and recommends deterministic settings, duplicate-run prevention, storage, retries, and alerts.

Example: trigger a ScreenshotNeo capture from cron

ScreenshotNeo exposes a screenshot endpoint that accepts a URL in a GET request. The following shell command is suitable as the capture command in a recurring cron entry or another scheduler; replace the API key and target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for current request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

This command writes the response to shot.webp. To schedule it, place the command in your scheduler’s job configuration and choose an interval appropriate to your monitoring need. Protect the API key as a secret rather than committing it to a public script or repository. Configure a unique output path or move each successful capture to durable storage; otherwise, each run can overwrite the prior file.

Equivalent Python request

import requests

r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Store the key in your scheduler’s secret manager or environment configuration. In production, check the HTTP response before saving it as an image, and handle request failures so an error response is not mistaken for a valid capture.

Equivalent Node.js request

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The request above shows the API call; a scheduled Node.js job should also check the response status and persist the response body in the storage location and naming scheme you choose.

Make external runs safe to repeat

  • Prevent duplicate work. A scheduler may retry or trigger overlapping runs. Use a lock or an idempotency key derived from the target, capture configuration, and scheduled time window.
  • Retry deliberately. Retry transient network or service failures with a limit and backoff. Avoid indefinite retries that can create overlapping runs or unexpected usage.
  • Store results and run metadata. Keep the capture, timestamp, target, configuration version, and outcome together. Choose storage and retention based on whether you need short-term monitoring or a durable archive.
  • Alert on failures. Send failures somewhere actionable, and include enough job context to distinguish a page-rendering problem from a scheduler or credential issue.
  • Validate the response. Confirm the request succeeded before treating the output as an image or PDF. Record failed, blank, or otherwise unusable captures according to the API’s response semantics.

Estimate recurring capture usage

Calculate volume using the billing unit for the provider you choose. Some services count screenshots, while Screenshot-API.net’s documentation describes a run as one render per page per width. Its example says a set of 10 pages at 2 widths on an hourly schedule uses 14,400 renders per month. That is the vendor’s illustrative calculation, not a universal pricing rule.

For a provider that bills per page and width, estimate monthly usage as:

runs per month × pages per run × widths per page

Then check the provider’s plan limits, billing period, and treatment of failures or retries. For a provider that bills differently, use its documented billable unit instead; the formula above does not apply automatically.

Keep history, retention, and deletion in view

A recurring schedule is not automatically an archive. Before enabling it, check how long the provider retains screenshots and run records, whether you can export them, and what happens when a job is paused or deleted. Allscreenshots’ schedule example includes a retentionDays field. ScreenshotAPI.net says deleting a job permanently deletes related screenshots. For that service, pause rather than delete if you need to preserve associated history; confirm the behavior of any other provider separately.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The schedule is rejected The provider expects a different preset, cron field count, or schedule field Use that provider’s documented syntax; do not copy another API’s field names or cron expression.
The job runs at an unexpected time The schedule uses a different timezone interpretation than expected Check the job’s configured timezone, the service’s documented timezone semantics, and daylight-saving behavior.
The screenshot is incomplete or inconsistent The page was captured before its content finished rendering, or viewport and wait settings vary Validate a manual capture, then make the viewport and wait settings deterministic. Confirm support for the required wait condition in the selected API.
Change alerts fire too often Ads, counters, or other dynamic content are changing between runs Adjust the service’s comparison sensitivity or hide volatile elements where supported.
Runs overlap or appear twice A slow capture overlaps the next schedule window, or a retry causes a duplicate trigger Use a lock or schedule-window job key, and bound retries.
There is no screenshot history after removing a job Deleting the schedule may also delete its associated captures Check deletion semantics before cleanup. ScreenshotAPI.net documents permanent deletion of related screenshots when its job is deleted.
Usage is higher than expected The provider bills per page, viewport width, retry, or another unit rather than per schedule run Recalculate against the provider’s stated billable unit and include each page, width, and retry where applicable.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server: one GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and its parameters also accept the names used by other screenshot APIs to make switching easier. Here is the one-call example; replace the target URL and API key, and consult the documentation for options:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
  • Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.
  • Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is available on every plan.
