YouTube Studio can schedule a live event, but its documented workflow does not include a setting that totals a playlist’s video durations and ends the stream when playback finishes. To schedule a playlist for a particular runtime, set up the playlist and its play-once or stop-time behavior in an encoder or compatible playout service, then connect that feed to the scheduled YouTube event.
What YouTube schedules—and what it does not
YouTube Studio schedules the live event. An encoder or compatible playout service supplies the video feed using the event’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s official instructions reviewed for this article describe creating a scheduled stream and connecting an encoder, but do not document a native Studio control that calculates an end time from the total duration of a playlist. YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder
That means the playlist’s runtime and the broadcast’s scheduled end are separate settings. Configure the playout tool to play the playlist once, repeat it, or stop at a specified time. Some providers document calculating a scheduled end time from the total playlist duration; that is a provider-specific function, not a YouTube Studio feature. For example, Upstream documents a duration-based scheduling workflow. Confirm the current controls and behavior with whichever service you choose.
Schedule a playlist stream using an encoder or playout service
- Create the event in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, select the Manage tab, and create a scheduled stream. You can reuse stream settings or create a new stream. The event can appear as upcoming, and viewers may opt in to reminders. See YouTube’s encoder-stream instructions.
- Build the playlist and set its run behavior. In your encoder or playout service, put the videos in the intended order. Choose whether they should play once, repeat, or stop at a chosen time. If the service offers an end time based on the total playlist runtime, check how it handles gaps, transitions, or changes to the playlist; the control is specific to that service.
- Connect the playout tool to the scheduled event. In YouTube Studio, open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder or service’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes the encoder to send a feed to your YouTube event. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Start the feed and check the preview. Start playback in the encoder or service. In Live Control Room, inspect the incoming preview and stream health. Complete the go-live step YouTube presents for the scheduled broadcast; scheduling the event alone does not send video.
- Monitor the broadcast and its source. For an unattended stream, plan for the availability of the playback source, computer or hosted service, network, and power. Use any monitoring or recovery controls your chosen tool provides, and verify its behavior before relying on it for a long event.
Choose between local playback and hosted cloud playout
A local encoder gives you direct control of the playback machine, but the machine, its power, and its network connection need to remain available. Hosted playout can move playback off your computer, but playlist controls, duration-based end scheduling, monitoring, recovery, key handling, and commercial terms vary by provider. The available documentation does not establish comparative uptime, performance, or cost across these approaches.

Account for YouTube’s archive limit
Duration-based scheduling and YouTube archiving are different concerns. YouTube Help says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours long, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” These are archive cautions, not a promise that YouTube will stop a longer stream. If you need a replay, plan around the 12-hour guidance rather than assuming a 24/7 broadcast will be saved. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
Playlist and stream checks before going live
- Confirm play-once versus looping. A 24/7 loop is not the same as one scheduled session that ends after a playlist finishes. Check that the selected behavior matches your intended broadcast.
- Test the end condition. If the playlist should end at its total duration, verify that the provider supports that behavior and what happens if you edit the playlist after scheduling.
- Protect the stream key. Enter it only in the intended encoder or service. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings.
- Check content rights and suitability. Make sure you have rights to stream every video and audio track. A playlist being accepted by a playout tool does not establish permission to broadcast it.
- Choose hardware to match the production. YouTube recommends hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but says expensive equipment is not needed to get started. YouTube Help: Choose a live encoder
- Decide whether an archive is essential. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube, so arrange another recording or shorter broadcast plan if you need a dependable replay.
Troubleshoot common scheduling problems
The scheduled event is visible, but no video appears
Scheduling creates the event; the encoder or playout service still has to send a feed. Confirm that playback is running and that the service has the correct event’s stream URL and key. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before completing YouTube’s go-live step.

The stream starts but does not stop when the playlist ends
Check whether the playlist is set to repeat, whether the service supports a play-once mode, and whether a stop time was configured. Do not expect YouTube Studio to infer the end time from the playlist duration; the reviewed Studio instructions do not document that feature.
The playlist loops when you wanted one pass
Change the repeat setting in the encoder or playout service, not in the YouTube event. If the tool supports a fixed end time instead of a play-once option, verify the timing against the complete playlist before scheduling.

The event has no archive
Check the broadcast length. YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while one exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A missing archive does not by itself mean the live broadcast was stopped.
The feed disconnects during an unattended stream
Check the playback source, computer or hosted service, power, and network, then review the playout tool’s monitoring and recovery controls. A repeating playlist does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast; recovery depends on the equipment or service and the connection to YouTube.
