To schedule a YouTube livestream playlist with FFmpeg on Ubuntu, create the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, prepare an ordered playlist file, and launch FFmpeg on an Ubuntu host at the planned time. These are separate jobs: YouTube schedules the event, while FFmpeg sends the video. For a scheduled encoder stream, be ready to check its preview and click Go live in Live Control Room; starting FFmpeg alone does not necessarily make the event public.
1. Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live.
- Open Manage, then select Schedule stream. Reuse a previous configuration or create a new stream.
- Set the title, visibility, date and time, and other event details. Check the displayed time and privacy setting before sharing the event page; YouTube notes that privacy defaults can differ by age group.
- Save the event. A scheduled stream gives you a watch-page URL to share, and viewers can set reminders. YouTube Help describes the benefit this way: “Scheduling a stream lets you promote your stream. Viewers can get reminders for upcoming streams, you can share the URL on social media, and more.” See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Keep the Live Control Room open for the stream URL, stream key, preview, and event controls. The precise interface can change, so confirm the current labels and event details in your account.
2. Build an ordered playlist for FFmpeg
The FFmpeg concat demuxer reads a text file containing media files in playback order. For example, save a file named playlist.ffconcat beside the clips:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip1.mp4'
file 'clip2.mp4'
file 'clip3.mp4'
The optional ffconcat version 1.0 marker must be the exact first line—with no leading space or byte-order mark—for automatic format recognition. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for syntax and escaping rules. Paths containing spaces or special characters need the escaping or quoting required by that format. Ensure the account that will launch FFmpeg can read both the playlist and every referenced file.

Check compatibility before choosing stream copy
The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps to place each file after the previous one, but concatenating without re-encoding is not guaranteed to work for arbitrary clips. The files need compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. Inaccurate durations or truncated files can cause artifacts. If the playlist mixes formats or settings, normalize the clips to compatible streams and test the result rather than assuming -c copy will work.
The documentation establishes how to describe sequential inputs; it does not establish one universally correct looping command for every FFmpeg build and media set. Check the manual for the FFmpeg version installed on your Ubuntu system (for example, ffmpeg -h full) and rehearse the exact playlist and output before relying on unattended playback.

3. Connect FFmpeg to the scheduled YouTube stream
- In the scheduled event’s Live Control Room, find the stream URL and stream key. YouTube explains that the key identifies the destination and allows YouTube to accept the encoder feed.
- Use the stream URL as the encoder’s server or destination and the stream key in the encoder’s separate key field. YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS; use the current destination shown in Live Control Room and the guidance in its live encoder settings.
- Keep the stream key private, like a password. Do not put a real key in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. Use a protected environment variable or a configuration file with restricted permissions, and ensure logs do not print the key.
- Before broadcasting, validate your FFmpeg command against your installed build and your actual playlist. The command-line options and quoting depend on the input and output; there is no single verified command here that can be promised to work unchanged across Ubuntu releases and media sets.
4. Choose video settings and check the connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and a bitrate suited to the chosen resolution and frame rate. Its current H.264 guidance lists 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3–8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Those are YouTube setting recommendations, not measurements of Indian broadband performance; recommendations differ for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before configuring the stream.
Recommended Free Tools
- Run a speed test on the actual connection used for the broadcast. Allow upload headroom rather than assuming the connection can continuously sustain a bitrate equal to its advertised or momentary upload speed.
- Test with audio and motion similar to the real playlist; static slides alone may not reveal problems that appear in moving video.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Confirm audio, video, and the stream’s appearance at the intended event page.
- Inspect transitions between clips, audio continuity, file readability, and upload stability during the rehearsal.
No India-specific ISP or bandwidth performance figure is established here. Your own connection test is the relevant check.

5. Run FFmpeg on an Ubuntu schedule
YouTube’s event schedule and Ubuntu’s process schedule are independent. YouTube creates and controls the event; a host scheduler such as cron or systemd starts the FFmpeg process. A host timer does not replace YouTube’s preview and Go live workflow for a scheduled encoder event.
- First run the intended FFmpeg command manually and confirm the event receives a healthy preview.
- Check the Ubuntu machine’s configured time zone and compare it with the time displayed on the YouTube event. Do not assume either system is using India Standard Time (IST) without checking.
- Use a private or unlisted rehearsal to verify that your chosen host scheduler launches the right command at the intended local time. The exact scheduling configuration depends on whether you use cron, a systemd timer, or another supervisor.
- Set up logging and failure handling, protect the stream key from logs, and decide how the process will be stopped. Verify that the scheduled process can read the playlist and media files under the account it runs as.
- Follow YouTube’s preparation guidance: set up the encoder at least two hours ahead, start it at least 15 minutes before the event, check the preview before the event, and verify access from channel or watch pages and a mobile device. These are preparation recommendations, not a cron timing rule. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
YouTube’s schedule interface and the Ubuntu host may represent time differently depending on their configuration. Verify the event page and the machine’s clock in advance; do not rely on an untested time-zone assumption for an unattended broadcast.

6. Stream copy or re-encode?
| Approach | When it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stream copy | The playlist files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. | Uses less CPU, but compatibility is a prerequisite; test for transition artifacts and playback issues. |
| Re-encode | The playlist mixes source formats or needs normalized output settings. | Can produce consistent streams, but uses CPU and requires suitable encoder and bitrate settings. |
7. Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube shows no incoming feed: verify the current stream URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm the FFmpeg process is running, and check that the Ubuntu host has working outbound connectivity. Keep the key private while correcting configuration.
- The preview appears but the event is not public: check the scheduled event’s privacy and start settings, then follow the Live Control Room preview and Go live workflow. Do not treat FFmpeg starting as proof that the event is public.
- Playback breaks at a clip boundary: check stream, codec, time-base, and duration compatibility. Rebuild or normalize mismatched inputs and rehearse the full playlist; stream copy is not a fix for incompatible files.
- The stream health warning reports instability: test the real upload connection, leave bitrate headroom, and confirm the configured bitrate matches YouTube’s current recommendation for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- The scheduled process starts at the wrong time or does not start: check the host’s time zone, scheduler configuration, command paths, permissions, and logs. Compare the actual launch time with the event time shown in YouTube, then prove the correction with a rehearsal.
- FFmpeg cannot open a playlist entry: confirm the playlist syntax, path escaping, file existence, and read permissions for the account launching FFmpeg.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can FFmpeg schedule the YouTube event by itself?
No. YouTube’s Live Control Room schedules the event; a host scheduler can separately launch FFmpeg.
Does the example playlist file prove that every set of MP4 clips will work with stream copy?
No. The clips still need compatible streams, codecs, and time bases, and the complete playlist should be tested.
