A working-tree-only check can miss credentials committed earlier. You can use your hosting platform’s secret scanner, a local tool such as Gitleaks, or both; then investigate findings safely and promptly revoke any real exposed credential.
Choose what to scan
Start by listing the repositories, branches, and Git references in scope. Include current files as well as committed history. Decide whether your scan also needs to cover places beyond Git repositories, such as hosted discussions or issues; coverage varies by tool and feature.
For GitHub repositories, GitHub says secret scanning checks the entire Git history on all branches for supported hardcoded credentials, including API keys, passwords, and tokens. Coverage depends on supported patterns, token types, settings, and feature availability. See GitHub’s secret scanning documentation.
Run a repository scan
Use GitHub secret scanning
For GitHub-hosted repositories, use the platform scanner when its repository coverage and supported secret types meet your needs. GitHub says public repositories receive secret scanning automatically for free. Organization-owned private and internal repositories require GitHub Secret Protection on eligible plans. An organization can also run a secret risk assessment, which GitHub describes as a free, on-demand point-in-time scan. Use Gitleaks locally
Gitleaks can scan a Git repository, files, or directories with its detect command. When scanning a Git repository, its documented approach processes patch output from git log -p; the --log-opts option lets you select a commit range. For ordinary files or directories, use its no-Git mode. Gitleaks also documents protect for uncommitted changes and a staged option for checks before committing. Refer to the project’s current usage documentation for exact command syntax and options, which can change between releases.
Prevent new secrets from being committed or pushed
A history scan finds existing exposure; prevention checks aim to catch a secret before it enters shared history. GitHub push protection blocks pushes containing supported secrets and creates alerts when repository-level blocks are bypassed. Its scope has limits: some legacy patterns are excluded, and large or timed-out pushes can affect detection. See Push protection from the command line and Secret scanning detection scope.

For local checks, Gitleaks’ protect command can scan uncommitted changes, including staged changes before a commit. Choose local checks, host-level push protection, or both according to your developers’ workflow and the credential types you need to catch. Neither replaces a scan of existing history.
Review findings without exposing the secret again
- Open the alert or local finding through a controlled channel. Record its file, commit or change, detection pattern, and owning service—not the full secret.
- Check whether the value is a live credential by consulting the service owner or validating it through an approved, access-controlled process. Do not paste it into an issue, chat, report, or public request for help.
- Classify the finding as confirmed exposure or a false positive without reproducing the value in your notes.
- If your organization uses a credential format that the scanner does not recognize, add a targeted custom pattern. Avoid broad suppressions that hide unrelated findings.
GitHub documents pattern matching and validation, and notes that detection depends on patterns, token types, and settings. Its pattern-pair detection may require both parts of a credential pair to appear in the same file. Details are in GitHub’s secret security reference and its detection scope documentation.

Respond to a confirmed exposed credential
- Revoke or rotate it promptly. Treat a real exposed credential as compromised. GitHub advises immediately rotating an affected credential; its push-protection guidance says a real exposed secret must be revoked and may be rotated before revocation. Follow the issuing service’s supported process. See Secret scanning and Push protection from the command line.
- Replace it wherever it is used. Update the application, deployment settings, CI jobs, or other authorized consumers to use the replacement credential. Check relevant service activity for signs of misuse.
- Decide separately whether to rewrite history. Removing a value from old commits may be warranted by your exposure response, but it is not a substitute for invalidating the credential. GitHub notes that history cleanup can be time-intensive and is often unnecessary after revocation. See the guidance in Secret scanning.
Make scanning part of repository maintenance
- Run a baseline scan across repositories and relevant refs, then add checks to the developer or CI workflow.
- Use continuous host detection where available, or schedule repeat scans for repositories that are not covered.
- Limit access to scan output and alert details; define who owns findings and how they are escalated.
- Keep credentials out of source code by storing and distributing them through an approved managed approach. GitHub documents organization-level capabilities for identifying and preventing exposure, including organization-specific patterns, in Secret security with GitHub.
What a clean scan does—and does not—tell you
A clean result means the selected tool did not report a match within the scope and settings used. It is not proof that no secret exists: scanners have supported-pattern limits, feature and configuration differences, and possible scope constraints. Record which repositories, refs, file types, and tool settings were scanned, and treat the result as one control rather than a guarantee. GitHub’s documented secret scanning scope describes relevant coverage limits.
