For general network scanning, Nmap lets you choose the scan’s vantage point; for supported AWS resources, Amazon Inspector provides ongoing vulnerability and network-exposure findings. Neither option makes every endpoint reachable from any location.
Choose the right tool for the target

What “remote” means for a scan
A scan originates from a particular network location. The target must be reachable from that vantage point through the applicable routing and network controls; changing your location does not guarantee a path to the endpoint. AWS documents Inspector’s reachability analysis in terms of AWS network paths and resources, not universal access to remote hosts.
For Nmap, use the official Nmap Reference Guide for scanning techniques and the Nmap Network Scanning guidebook for material ranging from basics to advanced techniques and practical scanning tasks. The Nmap project identifies the Reference Guide as its primary documentation.
Use Nmap when you need a network scan
Nmap is the relevant option when the task is general host or network scanning and you can place the scanner on a network with an allowed route to the target. The location from which you run it matters: a scan from your office network may see different paths than one run from a cloud environment or another network. The Nmap documentation explains scanning methods, but it does not provide a universal way around a target’s network boundaries.

Use Amazon Inspector for supported AWS workloads
Amazon Inspector automatically discovers and continually assesses supported AWS workloads for software vulnerabilities and unintended network exposure. Its EC2 network-reachability findings are based on open paths from VPC edges and AWS connectivity constructs, such as internet gateways, peering, or VPN connections. AWS says these findings are generated every 12 hours once Inspector is enabled; that cadence applies to AWS reachability findings, not a full port scan of arbitrary remote endpoints. Before starting a scan, confirm that you own the target or have explicit authorization. Define the permitted target ranges, timing, and acceptable scan intensity, and make sure the scanner’s network vantage point is appropriate for the task. These are prudent operational safeguards; they are not a jurisdiction-specific legal determination.
