You can often scan dark, reflective, or transparent objects by choosing a capture mode suited to the surface and, when needed, applying a compatible matte coating. The right approach depends on the scanner, material, and intended use: dark surfaces absorb projected light, glossy surfaces can reflect it unpredictably, and clear surfaces may transmit it. Start with the scanner’s instructions, test any treatment on a discreet area, and validate the resulting geometry before relying on it.
Why these surfaces are difficult to scan
Many optical scanners project light onto an object and calculate its shape from the pattern that returns. Surface properties can disrupt that return in different ways:
- Dark surfaces can absorb projected light, leaving too little usable signal.
- Reflective or glossy surfaces can send light away from the scanner or return it inconsistently.
- Transparent surfaces can transmit light, so the scanner may capture the background or another surface rather than the object’s exterior.
- Translucent materials can diffuse light, while fur, hair, and other surfaces without a stable solid structure may not produce a consistent shape.
A dark, polished object may combine more than one problem. These are capture challenges, not proof that an object cannot be scanned. The scanner technology and mode, object geometry, lighting, preparation, and required accuracy all affect the result. Artec describes these challenges for optical scanning in its guidance on black, reflective, transparent, and other difficult surfaces.
Choose a workflow for the object and its purpose
Before scanning, identify the surface issue and decide what the output needs to do. A mesh for visualization may tolerate missing detail that would be unacceptable for reverse engineering or dimensional inspection. For inspection work, determine the required tolerance and validation method before capture.

- Surface: Is it dark, glossy, transparent, translucent, low-texture, or a combination?
- Geometry and scale: Consider object size, recesses, edges, occluded areas, and the smallest feature that matters.
- Scanner and mode: Check the instructions for the exact device, software version, and capture mode. Do not assume a capability described for one mode applies to another.
- Treatment constraints: Decide whether coatings or tracking markers may touch the object, and whether cleanup or dimensional changes are acceptable.
- Output and validation: Plan the software, export and cleanup steps, and any reference measurements needed.
Revopoint’s manufacturer guidance says some of its laser modes can capture certain dark or shiny surfaces without spray under suitable conditions. It also advises careful preparation for transparent or specular surfaces. That is a mode- and product-specific manufacturer claim, not an independent comparison of scanners. Check your own device’s scanner guidance and requirements rather than treating it as a general rule.
Prepare the surface without risking the object
If the selected mode cannot capture the untreated surface reliably, a suitable matte coating or 3D scanning spray may help the scanner see a more stable surface. Some manufacturer guidance also mentions removable paint or talcum powder as preparation options. These treatments are not interchangeable, and none should be assumed safe, residue-free, or dimension-neutral for every object.

- Check the scanner and coating instructions. Confirm that the preparation is appropriate for the scanner mode and the object’s material.
- Test a representative, inconspicuous area. Check compatibility, appearance, removal, and whether the treatment affects critical edges or dimensions.
- Record treatment where measurements matter. For production or inspection workflows, document what was applied and account for any possible layer effect.
- Proceed only if the test is acceptable. Follow the coating manufacturer’s directions and make sure removal is suitable for the object.
For valuable, delicate, porous, or dimensionally critical items, do not coat the whole object unless the test and removal method are acceptable. If treatment is not permitted, try a supported alternative capture mode or carefully adjust angle, distance, and lighting; then assess whether the untreated scan is adequate for its intended use. Artec’s Artec Studio 17 scanning documentation describes preparation options, while Revopoint likewise advises testing treatment on a representative area.
Set up lighting, angle, and distance
Clean away fingerprints and arrange the workspace to reduce unwanted reflections. Avoid direct light bouncing into the scanner; where the device documentation calls for even lighting, avoid direct sunlight as well. For reflective objects, adjust the viewing angle and distance in small increments, checking whether the scanner receives a more stable return. Some workflows may benefit from tilting the scanner, but the useful angle depends on the device and object.

Keep the object within the scanner’s supported working range. A treatment-free scan that looks promising in one position still needs review for missing or distorted geometry.
Scan steadily and maintain alignment references
Move deliberately rather than making long, fast passes. Keep overlap between adjacent frames or separately captured regions so the software has shared information to align. Artec Studio’s scanning documentation advises avoiding overly fast movement and capturing common areas between scans; it also recommends extra coverage when going around an object in one pass. Follow the overlap and tracking guidance for your own scanner.

If your scanner uses markers, use the marker rules in its manual. In a specific SHINING 3D laser-mode preparation guide, four markers are required for alignment, with at least four visible within the normal scanning range; the guide recommends even, irregular distribution rather than grouping or symmetrical placement. It also describes a marker-equipped manual turntable and marker dice as possible aids for small dark or reflective objects. - Holes, missing edges, or incomplete regions.
- Unwanted background geometry or duplicated surfaces.
- Alignment errors and, where relevant, flipped normals or thin walls.
For a 3D-printing model, check that the geometry is suitable for printing, including holes, normals, thin walls, and unwanted background surfaces. For CAD or reverse engineering, compare important dimensions with a trusted reference measurement. For dimensional inspection, use an acceptance method tied to the required tolerance. A mesh that looks complete does not, by itself, establish measurement accuracy.
Compare options with a representative sample
If more than one scanner mode or preparation method might work, compare them on a sample that represents the actual object. Include preparation, capture, alignment, export, cleanup, and validation in the trial. This reveals workflow problems that a product specification alone cannot settle. Weigh the options against surface finish, geometry, working range, tracking requirements, treatment constraints, output software, and the measurements you need to trust.
