If you mean an old printed photograph, you can photograph it with a Galaxy phone, but Samsung’s documented Camera scan feature is for documents, not for digitizing or restoring family photos. If you mean a photo or document that is already digital, it does not need scanning. For paper documents, supported Galaxy devices can detect a document in Camera and let you review and save a scan; the exact controls depend on your model and software.
Can you scan a printed photo with a Samsung Galaxy?
A printed photo can be digitized by photographing it with your phone, but the Samsung sources cited here do not document a dedicated Galaxy Camera or Gallery mode for scanning printed photographs. They also do not establish a Samsung-specific method for preserving a print’s color or detail, removing glare, or automatically correcting it.
For a few prints, a phone photo is a practical capture option. As general photography tips—not Samsung scan features—use even light, position the camera parallel to the print, and avoid reflections. Review the image afterward to check framing and focus. These suggestions are not a tested comparison with a flatbed scanner.
If you have a large collection or want a repeatable scanning workflow, a flatbed photo scanner is an optional hardware category to consider. A flatbed uses glass; an automatic document feeder moves paper through a different scanning path. Samsung’s guidance for certain printer models lists selectable resolutions of up to 1,200 dpi on the flatbed glass and up to 300 dpi through the feeder. How to scan a document with a Galaxy camera
Samsung documents an in-camera scan workflow for supported Galaxy devices and software. Start in Camera and look for the scan control when a document is in view:
- Open Camera and point it at the document.
- When the phone detects the document, tap the scan control if it appears.
- Review the scan, make any available adjustments, and save it.
- Open Gallery to access the saved document. Samsung says you can edit the scan in Samsung Notes and export it as a PDF.
Samsung’s One UI 6 announcement describes Auto Scan detecting a document and opening an edit screen for rotating, aligning, and saving it. Samsung also describes recognition and removal of fingers in the document frame, and mentions Enhance-X for removing bulldog clips. Where the scan goes, and how to make a PDF
According to Samsung’s US support instructions, a saved document scan is accessible in Gallery. The same support page says you can edit it in Samsung Notes and export it as a PDF. The exact screens and labels can vary, so use Samsung’s instructions for your specific phone or tablet if the steps differ. Samsung Support: Scan and edit documents on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
What to do if Camera has no scan control
Scan availability and menus are not universal across Galaxy models or software versions. Samsung’s update notes for the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Tab S9 show that the feature’s placement changed: those notes say Scan document was separated from Scene Optimizer and Auto Scan was added. Look for the scan control in Camera while a document is in view. If it does not appear, check the current instructions for your exact model and software rather than relying on an older menu path. For example, Samsung’s Galaxy S10 support article describes a legacy route through Camera settings and a scan button that appears when a document is detected; it should not be treated as universal current guidance. Galaxy’s Auto Scan workflow is described for documents: it can detect a document and offer tools such as rotation and alignment. Capturing a printed photo is a different task. The cited Samsung documentation does not establish that document detection, shadow removal, or other automatic cleanup is designed to preserve the appearance of a family print.
