For a QR code in front of your Chromebook, open the built-in Camera app, choose Scan > QR code, and center the code in the viewfinder. Tap the recognized URL, text, or Wi-Fi prompt to use it. If the code is already displayed on your Chromebook, try Google Lens to select that part of the screen instead.
Scan a printed QR code or one on another device
- Open the Launcher and start Camera.
- At the bottom of the Camera app, choose Scan, then QR code.
- Hold the code in front of the Chromebook camera and center it in the viewfinder. Wait for the app to recognize it.
- Tap the recognized URL or text, or follow the Wi-Fi connection prompt if that is what appears.
Google also says the Camera app can scan a QR code directly from the viewfinder without first selecting QR code mode. The app is the usual built-in option; Google’s instructions do not require a separate paid app or dedicated scanner. See Google’s Camera app instructions.
Scan a QR code already on your Chromebook screen
Use Lens to select the code on screen and search for it. Google documents screen selection and Google Search results, but does not guarantee that Lens will decode every QR code or payload.
- Open the Launcher and choose Lens. Alternatively, open Screen Capture and choose Take partial screenshot.
- Select and drag over the QR code area.
- If you used Screen Capture, choose Search with Google and review the results.
For screen search with Lens, Google requires Google to be the default search engine. Available Lens controls may differ with the ChromeOS interface. Google’s instructions are at Search with Lens on your Chromebook. In Chrome on a computer, Lens can also select an image or page area; see Google’s Chrome Lens instructions.

If Lens does not recognize the code
- If you can save or obtain the QR image, open it in Gallery and try selecting the code with Lens.
- Otherwise, display the code on another device and scan it with the Chromebook Camera app, or use another device’s camera.
These are practical alternatives; Google’s Lens instructions describe selecting screen content and searching, not guaranteed QR decoding in every situation.
When setup tells you to use a phone
Some Chromebook Quick Start setup flows display a QR code on the Chromebook and instruct you to scan it with an Android phone. Follow that phone-based instruction for that setup process; it is separate from scanning a physical code with the Chromebook Camera app. See Google’s Quick Start setup instructions.

A document scanner is not needed for the ordinary QR workflows above. Google’s separate scanner setup instructions concern document scanning, not a requirement for QR codes.
