The right way to save in Majora’s Mask depends on which version you’re playing. In the original Nintendo 64 game, the Song of Time makes the durable in-game save; an Owl Statue creates a one-use interrupt save. The 3DS remake saves at owl and quill statues, while Nintendo Switch’s Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics offers separate Suspend Points that capture a point in the emulated session.
Original Nintendo 64: save with the Song of Time
To preserve progress in the original N64 game, play the Song of Time and let the return to the First Day finish. The game saves progress as Link returns to 6:00 a.m. on the First Day. Wait until “Dawn of the First Day” appears before turning off the system.
This is a cycle reset, not a snapshot of everything exactly as it was. The game gives Link 72 in-game hours—three days—before the game ends if he does not avert it. Playing the Song of Time takes him back to the beginning of that cycle and resets some temporary progress.
What carries over and what resets
The N64 Song of Time save preserves important progress, but not every item or activity. The manual identifies the following categories:

In practice, bank rupees before resetting if you want to keep them. Do not assume that a cleared activity, a dungeon key, or an item count will remain after the cycle restarts.
Original N64: use an Owl Statue to pause a session
An Owl Statue provides a temporary interrupt save when you need to stop before using the Song of Time. If the statue is inactive, hit it with the sword; then interact with it and confirm the save. Wait for the Title Screen before powering off.

On your next play, choose the file marked with an owl. This save records your current status for that continuation, but it is consumed when loaded. Once you continue, make another save with the Song of Time or an Owl Statue before quitting. That one-use behavior is why an Owl Statue save can seem to disappear: continuing the file deletes the interrupt save by design.
Switch: create a Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics Suspend Point
On Switch, Nintendo’s N64 Nintendo Classics app has a platform-level feature called a Suspend Point. It is separate from the game’s Song of Time save: the Song of Time advances the game’s cycle, while a Suspend Point preserves a point in the emulated session.

- While playing, open the Suspend Menu. Nintendo lists Minus for Joy-Con or standard Switch controls, and ZR for the N64 controller.
- Choose Create Suspend Point, then select an available slot.
- To resume later, open the Suspend Menu, choose Load Suspend Point, and select the saved point.
Nintendo documents up to four Suspend Point slots for each game. Overwriting an existing point cannot be undone, so check the slot before confirming. The Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics library requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. If your controller or menu behaves differently, follow the controls shown on-screen.
Majora’s Mask 3D: save at an owl or quill statue
The 3DS remake uses different rules from the original N64 Owl Statue interrupt save. In Majora’s Mask 3D, stand in front of an owl statue or quill statue and press A to save. Returning to the First Day does not automatically save the game.

During a save, do not turn off or reset the system, remove the game card or SD card, or use external accessories or software to modify save data. These are 3DS manual instructions; they should not be substituted for the N64 save steps.

There is no universal button sequence or save-state behavior across third-party emulators. Controls, state formats, and persistence differ by emulator and platform, so use that emulator’s own documentation for exact steps. A save state should not be treated as a backup of the game’s in-game save, and compatibility or portability between emulator versions is not established universally.

Which save should you use?
- Original N64, done for now: play the Song of Time for the durable in-game save, accepting the listed cycle resets.
- Original N64, pausing mid-cycle: create an Owl Statue interrupt save, then make a new save after continuing before quitting again.
- Switch N64 Nintendo Classics: use a Suspend Point to preserve a session snapshot; use the Song of Time when you intend to advance the game’s own cycle.
- 3DS: save directly at an owl or quill statue; the return to the First Day is not itself a save.
- Third-party emulator: check the documentation for the specific emulator and device rather than applying Nintendo’s platform instructions.
Original N64 hardware note
The original Nintendo 64 manual says an Expansion Pak must be inserted to play the N64 release. This requirement applies to the original-console version, not to the 3DS remake or Switch Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics.
