Wait for the game’s saving indicator to finish, then—where available—check that your cloud save has synced before closing the stream or switching devices. Xbox Cloud Gaming uses cloud saves for streamed games, but the save action and timing depend on the game.
Save your game before ending the stream
- Use the game’s save option, if it has one. Open the game’s menu and choose its save command. Xbox does not define one universal save button for Cloud Gaming; controls and save systems vary by title.
- If the game saves automatically, reach a safe point. This might be a checkpoint or another point the game recognizes as saved. Watch for an on-screen saving message or animation.
- Keep the session open until saving finishes. Do not close the browser tab, app, TV app, or stream while the game shows that it is saving.
- Check sync status where the indicator is available. Xbox announced a Game Save Sync Indicator for supported PC and handheld experiences. If it appears, wait until it shows that the save is synced before powering down or resuming on another device. Availability described by Xbox does not establish that the indicator appears on phones, browsers, TVs, or consoles. Xbox’s January 21, 2026 announcement describes the indicator as providing real-time visibility into cloud-save status.
Xbox’s Cloud Gaming FAQ describes streamed games as having “Limited game save storage (cloud saves only).” That means you should rely on the game’s cloud-save behavior, not expect a local save file from the stream.
Can you continue on another device?
Xbox describes taking progress across devices as a Cloud Gaming capability, and its Xbox PC app page refers to playing across devices with game saves. Whether a particular save carries over depends on the title and destination platform; these statements do not guarantee that every game syncs immediately or supports every device combination. Wait for the game to finish saving and, when present, use the sync indicator before switching.
If the session ends unexpectedly
Relaunch the game while signed in to the same Xbox account and allow it to load its cloud save. Progress made after the game’s last completed save may not be recoverable. Xbox’s reviewed Cloud Gaming information does not promise a way to restore actions that were never saved, so do not assume an interrupted save will be recovered.

Is there a session-ending warning or fixed timeout?
The official Xbox Cloud Gaming FAQ does not specify a universal countdown before a session ends or a standard idle timeout. If you see a warning in your session, treat it as a prompt to save promptly, but do not rely on having a particular number of minutes. For title-specific save behavior, check that game’s own instructions.
