Google Maps’ Screenshot to save feature uses Gemini to recognize place names in screenshots, then lets you review and save individual matches to a Maps list. It can help collect places for a trip, but it does not build a complete itinerary for you.
What Screenshot to save does
When enabled, Screenshot to save looks for place names in screenshots and presents possible matches for you to review. You decide whether to save or skip each match; you can also edit a place name or open the place’s Maps details. Google describes saved places appearing on a map and being organized in shareable lists in its March 27, 2025 announcement. The current instructions are on Google Maps Help.
How to save places from screenshots
- Open the feature: In Google Maps on an iPhone or iPad, tap You, then Screenshots.
- Choose photo access: Follow the prompt to grant access to your photos. Full photo access is required for automatic scanning; if you limit or decline full access, you can still select screenshots manually.
- Choose a workflow: To have Maps check new screenshots, turn on auto-scan and allow full photo access. To select images yourself, choose screenshots from the Screenshots area. Manual selection supports up to 50 screenshots at a time, including older images.
- Review the matches: For each detected place, save it to a Maps list, skip it, edit the place name, or open its Maps details to check the match.
Automatic scanning or manual selection?
| Workflow | What it does | Photo access |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic scanning | Checks new screenshots for place names. | Requires full photo access. |
| Manual selection | Lets you choose up to 50 screenshots, including older images, for review. | Available without full photo access; select the images you want to use. |
Screenshot to save is off by default. Enabling it is optional, and you can use manual selection rather than granting full photo access for automatic scanning. Turning off auto-scan does not remove places you have already saved.
What to do if a place is not detected
- Try selecting the screenshot manually from the Screenshots area.
- Check that the image contains a clear text name of the place. Google recommends screenshots with clear place-name text.
- Review the suggested match before saving; recognition is a way to find candidate places, not a guarantee that every image or place will be identified.
Where the feature is available
Google Maps Help, checked September 28, 2026, describes Screenshot to save as available on iPhone or iPad in certain countries, but the instructions captured there do not name those countries. Google’s March 27, 2025 announcement described the initial rollout as starting that week in the United States, in English, on iOS, with Android coming soon. That was launch context, not confirmation of current Android support or availability in any particular country. Check the current Help page for the supported-device guidance.
