Use one of two approaches: capture the map that your C# browser component has rendered, or request a new map image from Google’s Maps Static API. A CefSharp off-screen browser preserves the interactive viewport, overlays, and page state. The Static API avoids browser rendering and gives deterministic dimensions and styling. The correct choice depends on whether you need the exact page the user sees or a parameter-defined map image.
Choose the capture method first
| Requirement | CefSharp browser screenshot | Google Maps Static API |
|---|---|---|
| Match the current interactive viewport | Strong fit | Weak fit |
| Keep overlays or user state rendered in the page | Strong fit | Only features represented by API parameters |
| Fixed dimensions and repeatable styling | Possible with a viewport | Strong fit with size, scale, style and related parameters |
| Avoid JavaScript and a browser process | No | Yes |
| Credentials and billing | Depends on the page and your application | Required for the Static API |
Do not treat a browser screenshot as a way to extract map tiles. Save the rendered result for an allowed use, keep Google attribution visible, and follow the Maps Platform terms that apply to your project.
Capture a rendered map with CefSharp OffScreen
CefSharp’s off-screen Chromium control can load Google Maps without displaying a normal application window. Its CaptureScreenshotAsync method is documented as “Capture page screenshot.” The method returns image bytes; you select a format and can supply a viewport.
Install and initialize CefSharp
Add the CefSharp.OffScreen package version that matches the rest of your CefSharp packages. Initialize CefSharp once at application startup, before creating a browser. The exact initialization code depends on your target framework and CefSharp version, so use the startup pattern from that version’s documentation rather than mixing package versions.

Complete asynchronous example
using CefSharp;
using CefSharp.OffScreen;
internal static class MapCapture
{
public static async Task SaveAsync(string outputPath)
{
using var browser = new ChromiumWebBrowser(
"https://www.google.com/maps/@40.7128,-74.0060,12z");
await browser.WaitForInitialLoadAsync();
// Readiness is application-specific. Wait until your map container
// exists and the visible tiles have finished loading.
await WaitForMapReadyAsync(browser);
var viewport = new CefSharp.DevTools.Page.Viewport
{
X = 0,
Y = 0,
Width = 1200,
Height = 800,
Scale = 1
};
byte[] png = await browser.CaptureScreenshotAsync(
CefSharp.DevTools.Page.CaptureScreenshotFormat.Png,
quality: 100,
viewport: viewport);
await File.WriteAllBytesAsync(outputPath, png);
}
private static async Task WaitForMapReadyAsync(IWebBrowser browser)
{
// Replace this with a check appropriate to your page and CefSharp
// version: for example, execute JavaScript that confirms the map
// container is present, then allow visible tiles to settle.
await Task.Delay(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(3));
}
}
The delay above is deliberately a placeholder for an application check, not a universal Google Maps event. A robust implementation can call EvaluateScriptAsync to test for the map container, observe your own page’s loading state, and then allow tile requests and labels to settle. A fixed delay alone can be too short on a slow connection and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
Choose PNG, JPEG or another output
Use PNG when labels, lines and transparent-looking edges need lossless rendering. JPEG can be smaller for photographic or map backgrounds, but it introduces compression artifacts. CefSharp’s capture API accepts a format and quality value; quality is relevant to lossy formats. Keep the returned bytes unchanged when writing the file so the format’s signature and metadata remain valid.
Control what is in the frame
- Set the viewport width and height explicitly for reproducible output.
- Set the browser’s device scale factor if your application requires high-density output; confirm the resulting pixel dimensions rather than assuming CSS pixels equal file pixels.
- Scroll or zoom the map before capture only if that is part of your intended user flow.
- Hide application UI around the map with your own CSS, but do not remove Google logos, copyright text or other supplied attribution.
- For a full page, capture after the page has been laid out at the required size; a viewport screenshot is not automatically a stitched, unlimited map.
Make readiness deterministic
Map pages can contain consent dialogs, account prompts, lazy content and network-dependent tiles. Decide how your application handles each state before taking the screenshot. Check that the expected map element exists, that its dimensions are non-zero, and that your own loading indicator is gone. If you need a user-selected location or overlay, wait for that state rather than only for the document’s initial load event.
Generate a map directly with the Google Maps Static API
The Static API returns an image—GIF, PNG or JPEG—in response to an HTTP request. You construct a URL with parameters such as center, zoom, size, map type, markers, paths and styling, then save the HTTP response as an image file.

URL-encode parameter values. Google documents a maximum URL length of 16,384 characters, so long style, path or marker sets must stay below that limit. Enable the Maps Static API in the relevant Google Cloud project, configure billing, and authenticate the request with the credentials required by your project. Store keys and signing secrets outside source control.

await using var output = File.Create("static-map.png");
await input.CopyToAsync(output);
In production, inspect the response content type and size before writing it, apply a reasonable timeout, and log the HTTP status without logging credentials. A successful HTTP response is not by itself proof that the requested map content is present; validate the file when your workflow depends on it.
Google Maps attribution and storage limits
Google’s Maps JavaScript policy requires results to be displayed on Google Maps and attribution to remain clear, legible, unmodified and correctly positioned. Maps Platform terms restrict exporting, extracting, scraping, pre-fetching, indexing, storing, resharing or rehosting Google Maps Content outside the Services. Google API terms also restrict copying, modifying, distributing or publicly displaying content, and removing proprietary notices, unless expressly permitted.
- Keep the Google logo, copyright line and supplied notices in every saved image where they appear.
- Do not crop, cover or redraw attribution to make the image look unbranded.
- Do not bulk-download tiles or turn map imagery into an external geographic database.
- Check the terms for your account, API, region and use case before publishing or redistributing files.
A screenshot is not a blanket license to republish a map. If your requirement is a public, permanent image library, obtain an explicit policy determination for that use.

The file is blank or shows a loading map
Cause: capture ran after the document loaded but before the map container or tiles were ready. Fix: test for the container, non-zero dimensions and your page’s ready state; then capture. Increase the wait only after measuring slow cases.
The screenshot has the wrong size
Cause: CSS viewport dimensions, device scale and output pixels were conflated. Fix: set the DevTools viewport explicitly, account for scale, and inspect the resulting image dimensions.

Consent or sign-in UI covers the map
Cause: the loaded page presents a dialog or account state that your code did not handle. Fix: implement an explicit, policy-compliant interaction for that state, or use the Static API when you only need a parameterized map and not page UI.
Tiles or labels are missing
Cause: network requests are still in flight, a request failed, or the viewport was captured during animation. Fix: wait for the map to settle, capture after zoom or pan animations finish, and record failed requests for diagnosis. Do not retry indefinitely without a timeout.

The Static API returns an error image or HTTP failure
Cause: the API is not enabled, billing or credentials are incomplete, parameters are malformed, the signature is wrong, or the URL exceeds the documented limit. Fix: verify project configuration, URL-encode every value, generate the signature according to Google’s requirements, and keep the URL under 16,384 characters.
CefSharp crashes or hangs on shutdown
Cause: browser instances were created before CefSharp initialization, disposed while work was active, or run with mismatched package versions. Fix: initialize once, keep package versions aligned, await capture completion, dispose the browser after the write finishes, and shut down CefSharp according to your application type.
Performance, reliability and cost decisions
Browser capture
A Chromium process consumes memory and must load JavaScript, styles and tiles for every independent browser context. Reuse a controlled browser lifecycle where appropriate, limit concurrent captures, and set navigation, readiness and capture timeouts. Browser capture is the practical route when the image must match a live viewport or include page-rendered overlays, but results can vary with network timing and page changes.

Static API
The Static API is simpler to queue and cache because the request describes the output. It is a poor substitute for arbitrary page UI: only documented parameters such as markers, paths and styles are represented. Billing applies to Google’s developer service under your project’s account; confirm current pricing and quotas in the Google Cloud console before estimating volume.
Validate before publishing
- Confirm the output format from the file signature or content type.
- Check width, height and file size against expected bounds.
- Reject HTML error pages saved with an image extension.
- Keep request identifiers and sanitized failure logs so intermittent network problems can be investigated.
