For a single screenshot that needs its own subfolder or filename, pass a relative path to cy.screenshot() instead. Cypress’s documented default folder is cypress/screenshots.
Set a custom folder for all Cypress screenshots
Configure screenshotsFolder in your Cypress configuration file. This changes the root used by both manual cy.screenshot() calls and failure screenshots taken during cypress run. The examples below use the CommonJS configuration form:

Organize one screenshot in a nested path
When only an individual capture needs a different filename or subdirectory, pass a path to cy.screenshot():

cy.screenshot('actions/login/clicking-login')Cypress interprets this name relative to the configured screenshots folder and the adjusted spec-file path, then creates the nested folders. A named screenshot follows the general pattern {screenshotsFolder}/{adjustedSpecPath}/{name}.png. The argument is not an unrestricted absolute destination. See the cy.screenshot() API for details.
Use screenshotsFolder when all captures need a new common root; use a command path when you only need to organize one capture beneath that root. Duplicate names are numbered by default. To overwrite a duplicate explicitly, pass the option:

To change the destination for one invocation without editing the project configuration, use Cypress’s --config option:

cypress run --config-file tests/cypress.config.jsAccount for cleanup and failure screenshots
Before cypress run, Cypress clears the contents of configured asset folders by default, including the screenshots folder and its nested files. If the custom destination contains screenshots that must persist between runs, set trashAssetsBeforeRuns: false in Cypress configuration. This also affects the downloads and videos asset folders. The behavior is described in Cypress’s screenshots and videos guide.
Cypress automatically captures screenshots for test failures in cypress run, but not in cypress open. Manual calls to cy.screenshot() work in both modes.

Troubleshoot missing or misplaced screenshots
- Screenshot appears under an unexpected directory: Check both
screenshotsFolderand the path passed tocy.screenshot(). The command path is resolved relative to the screenshot folder and adjusted spec path, not as an arbitrary absolute destination. - Earlier screenshots disappear after a run: Cypress clears configured asset folders before
cypress runby default. SettrashAssetsBeforeRuns: falseif those files need to remain. - No automatic failure image in open mode: Automatic failure screenshots are a
cypress runbehavior. Incypress open, take a manual screenshot withcy.screenshot()if needed. - CLI run still uses the configured folder: Confirm the command includes
--config screenshotsFolder=...; that CLI setting overrides the configuration-file value.
