Save the files your visual tests generate—such as screenshots, diffs, traces, and reports—to known paths, then upload those paths as CI artifacts. Uploading a run’s output preserves evidence for review; it does not automatically approve or replace the reference screenshots your tests compare against.
Separate approved baselines from per-run evidence
A baseline is the approved reference image used for comparison. A run artifact is output from a particular CI run: for example, the actual screenshot, a diff, a test report, or a trace. Keep these roles distinct. A failed comparison should give reviewers evidence to assess, not silently rewrite the expected image.
With Playwright, toHaveScreenshot() performs screenshot comparisons and works with snapshot files in the test workflow. Configure and review the reference images deliberately; use artifacts to preserve the report and diagnostic files from each run. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation.
Choose stable paths and a repeatable test environment
- Identify the outputs. Check the framework and project configuration for the actual paths of the HTML report, test results, actual screenshots, diffs, and traces. Do not assume that all of them live in one directory.
- Run comparisons in a consistent environment. Use the same browser and operating-system environment used to create the approved baselines, as closely as practical. Different rendering environments can produce different screenshots; Playwright recommends using the same environment for screenshot comparisons. See Playwright’s guidance.
- Upload the run outputs. Add an artifact step after the test command and point it at the paths your project actually writes. Include the report and visual-test diagnostics you need to investigate a mismatch.
- Decide when to upload. Preserve failed-run evidence at minimum if you need to diagnose mismatches. Successful-run artifacts can also help with review or audit, but create more stored output.
- Set retention and access deliberately. Choose a retention period that suits your review and debugging needs, and limit access if screenshots or reports might expose sensitive information.
GitHub Actions: upload the report or screenshot directory
GitHub artifacts preserve files after a workflow job and can also pass files between jobs. Screenshots and test results are common artifact contents. The Playwright CI guide demonstrates uploading the HTML report directory with actions/upload-artifact and a retention setting; change the path to match your own outputs rather than assuming screenshots are in playwright-report/.

retention-days: 30
This is an adaptable pattern, not a universal Playwright configuration: verify the action version and retention policy against GitHub’s current documentation when adding it, and replace the paths with the directories your workflow creates. The Playwright guide’s example uses a 30-day report retention setting; choose your own value based on policy and need. See Playwright’s CI guide and GitHub’s workflow artifact documentation.
GitLab CI: choose upload conditions, expiration, and access
In GitLab, declare the output paths under the job’s artifacts. Use when: always to keep output from successful and failed jobs, or when: on_failure if artifacts are only useful after failures. Set expire_in according to your retention policy and review who can access the files.

Change the example paths and expiration to suit your project. GitLab documents a default maximum final artifact archive size of 100 MB; instance, group, or project settings may override it. GitLab also documents keep-latest behavior that can affect when older artifacts expire, so check the lifecycle settings that apply to your project. See GitLab job artifacts documentation.
Show screenshots beside GitLab test failures
If you want screenshots surfaced with failed test details, attach their paths in the JUnit XML and upload both the XML report and screenshot directory. The paths in the XML must point to files that are included in the job artifacts. See GitLab’s test report file documentation.

Protect screenshots, reports, and traces
Visual outputs can reveal application details; reports, logs, and traces may also contain credentials, tokens, source code, or other sensitive data. Restrict artifact access and avoid uploading data that does not belong in your CI storage. Playwright advises: “If you upload reports and traces as part of your CI workflow, make sure that you only upload them to trusted artifact stores, or that you encrypt the files before upload.” See Playwright’s CI security guidance.
Troubleshooting artifact gaps and noisy diffs
- No screenshots in the downloaded artifact: Confirm the test framework’s output directory and ensure the configured artifact path matches it. The Playwright CI example uploads
playwright-report/; actual screenshots or test results may be in a separate configured directory. - No artifact after a failed test: Check the upload condition. In GitLab,
on_successwill not preserve a failed run; useon_failureoralways. In GitHub Actions, anif: always()condition can make the upload step run after earlier failure, subject to workflow behavior and available files. - Artifact exists but a screenshot is missing: Check that the file was created, is inside an included path, and is not excluded by the artifact configuration. For GitLab test-report attachments, make sure the XML path and uploaded artifact path refer to the same file.
- Older files persist longer than expected: Review configured expiration and provider lifecycle rules. GitLab keep-latest behavior can affect expiration of older job artifacts.
- Archive upload fails or exceeds a limit: Inspect the artifact archive size and configured limits. GitLab’s documented default maximum final archive size is 100 MB, but administrators can override it.
- Visual diffs appear despite no intentional change: Compare the browser and operating-system environment with the one used for approved baselines. Investigate rendering inputs such as fonts and viewport configuration as practical variables; the cited Playwright guidance establishes the importance of using the same environment, not a quantified effect for each variable.
Or skip the browser setup
For generating a screenshot through an API instead of configuring a browser capture, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Add the result to CI artifact storage just as you would other generated output. It does not replace visual-test comparisons, baseline review, or the CI artifact configuration above.
