Windows lets you show, hide, resize, and manually arrange desktop icons, but Microsoft’s current guidance does not document a built-in way to save a custom icon layout as a reusable snapshot. For manual placement, check the desktop’s View options; for named layouts you can save and reopen, SoftwareOK says its third-party DesktopOK utility supports Windows 10 and 11.
Choose between manual placement and a saved layout
If you only want to place icons yourself, Windows includes controls for desktop icon visibility, size, and customization. Those controls are different from saving a layout that you can restore later. Microsoft’s desktop-icon guidance covers customization and show-or-hide behavior, but does not describe exporting or restoring a snapshot of custom positions.
For a reusable layout, a third-party utility is one option. SoftwareOK describes DesktopOK as a tool for saving and restoring icon positions, and its help page names Windows 10 and Windows 11. That is the vendor’s feature and compatibility claim, not an independent test or a guarantee that every restore will succeed.
Manually arrange icons with Windows controls
A historical Microsoft Q&A answer for Windows 7 recommends turning off Auto arrange and Align icons to grid in the desktop’s View menu when users want to place icons freely. The answer dates to 2010, so treat it as historical guidance rather than a definitive description of the current interface. Menu labels or availability may vary by Windows build.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Open the desktop’s View menu. Right-click an empty area of the desktop and inspect the available icon arrangement options.
- Review Auto arrange and Align icons to grid. If those options are present and you want freer placement, turn them off. Check the labels on your own Windows version rather than assuming they are unchanged.
- Move icons to the positions you want. This changes their placement; it does not create a backup file or establish that Windows can restore an arbitrary layout after a disruption.
Microsoft’s desktop-icon page applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; users still running it should account for that lifecycle status when deciding whether to keep using it. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
Save a reusable layout with DesktopOK
If you want a layout you can save and reopen, DesktopOK is an optional third-party route. SoftwareOK’s pages describe saving and restoring icon positions and list support for Windows 10 and 11. Follow the utility’s current vendor instructions; the steps below describe a cautious workflow, not a verified test of the software.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Arrange the desktop first. Put the icons where you want them before creating a saved layout.
- Save a layout in DesktopOK. Use the utility’s current save function and give the layout a recognizable name if that option is available.
- Keep a separate copy of the saved layout file. Store it somewhere safe, such as a location outside the desktop, so you still have a copy if the desktop itself changes.
- Restore when needed. Use DesktopOK’s current instructions to open or restore the saved layout. Confirm the result rather than assuming the saved file guarantees a successful restore.
DesktopOK’s FAQ describes a reported case in which opening a .dok layout did not restore icons. That is a troubleshooting caveat from the vendor’s FAQ, not evidence that restores generally fail.
Check these things if icons disappear or move
- Check visibility. In the desktop’s View options, verify that showing desktop icons is enabled. Hidden icons can look like missing shortcuts even when the desktop contents remain present.
- Check whether the desktop items still exist. If the icons are not visible, confirm whether the shortcuts or files are still in the desktop folder before rebuilding the layout.
- Consider the available desktop area. A display or resolution change can alter the space available for icon placement. Check the arrangement after such a change, but do not assume it is the cause without verifying the desktop.
- If a saved layout does not restore, consult DesktopOK’s current help and FAQ and try the saved copy you kept. The vendor documents a reported .dok restore issue, but does not establish that one cause explains every failure.
Why registry edits are not the usual answer
Microsoft explains how to export and restore registry data generally, but that guidance does not establish a specific supported recipe for backing up desktop icon positions. Registry editing is therefore not a substitute for a documented layout-saving feature; use a tool’s own save/restore workflow if you need reusable layouts.
