To save a webpage as HTML, use your browser’s save command and choose a format that matches your goal. Choose an HTML-only option for source code; choose a complete-page format if you want images and supporting files for offline viewing. Those formats are not interchangeable.
Choose between HTML source and an offline copy
| Format | What it saves | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| HTML only / Page Source | One HTML file without the page’s images; it may not retain the live page’s appearance. | Keeping or reusing the page’s HTML source. |
| Complete page / Web Archive | The HTML and supporting resources, either in a companion folder or a browser archive. | Keeping a copy that more closely resembles the page, including graphics. |
| SingleFile | A single HTML file intended to include page resources such as CSS and images. | Trying to keep a page and its resources together in one file. |
A saved page is a local copy, not a guarantee that every feature will work offline. Dynamic content and links to other pages may still depend on the live site, and some pages prevent saving displayed items.
Save a webpage in Chrome on a computer
- Open the webpage while connected to the internet.
- Select More > Cast, save, and share > Save page as…
- Choose a folder and save the file.
- To view it later, open the saved file; Chrome says it opens in the default browser.
These steps are for Chrome on a computer; the cited Chrome instructions do not establish the equivalent flow on phones or tablets. See Chrome’s instructions for saving a page.
Save a webpage in Firefox
- Open the page and select Menu > Save Page As.
- Choose a filename and where to save it.
- Select Web page, complete to save the HTML with pictures and supporting files, or Web page, HTML only to save the HTML without pictures.
- Select Save.
With Web page, complete, Firefox creates a companion folder for resources. Keep that folder alongside the HTML file or the saved page may lose its images and other supporting content. Firefox also offers Text files, which saves text rather than preserving the HTML link structure, and All files, described as equivalent to HTML only while allowing you to specify a file extension. For the usual source-file or offline-copy goals, choose one of the two web-page formats. See Firefox’s page-saving instructions.

Save a webpage in Safari on Mac
- Open the webpage in Safari.
- Choose File > Save As.
- Under Format, choose Page Source for HTML source only, or Web Archive to include graphics.
Apple notes that some webpages may prevent saving items displayed on the page. A Web Archive can include graphics, but links to other pages still need those destinations to be available. See Apple’s Safari instructions.
Save one self-contained HTML file
If you want one file rather than an HTML file plus a resource folder, consider SingleFile. Its project describes a browser extension and command-line tool for saving a complete webpage into one HTML file. The Chrome Web Store listing says the extension can include CSS, images, fonts, and frames.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The saved HTML looks plain or has no pictures: You likely chose HTML only or Page Source. Save again using Firefox’s Web page, complete or Safari’s Web Archive if you need a richer offline copy.
- A complete Firefox save has missing images: Check that the companion folder remains in the same location as the HTML file. Moving or deleting it can separate the page from its resources.
- Some page content is missing: The site may prevent saving displayed items, or the page may rely on dynamic or externally loaded content. A local save is not a guarantee that all site behavior will work offline.
- Links do not open offline: Saving a page does not save the destination pages linked from it. Those destinations must remain available for the links to work.
- You cannot find Chrome’s save option: Confirm you are using Chrome on a computer and follow the menu path above; the cited instructions do not cover the phone or tablet interface.
