On a computer, open the document and choose File > Download, then select the format you need. For a large Google Docs file in Chrome, Google recommends a print-to-PDF alternative. EPUB is listed among Google Docs export options in its Android help, but the exact options can depend on the device.
Save a Google Doc as a PDF on a computer
- Open the document in Google Docs.
- Select File > Download.
- Choose PDF Document (.pdf).
- Open the downloaded PDF and check its layout before sharing or printing it.

If a large document will not download as a PDF
For a large Docs file in Chrome, Google documents this alternative:

- Select File > Print.
- In the print dialog, select Save as PDF beside Destination.
- Click Save and choose where to store the PDF.
Check the print preview before saving if the layout matters. Google notes that pageless documents can look different in print preview: images adjust to page width, and wide tables may be squeezed to fit. See Google’s print instructions.

Download a Google Doc as a Word document
- Open the document and select File > Download.
- Choose the Microsoft Word option, commonly labeled Microsoft Word (.docx).
- Find the downloaded file on your computer and open it in Word if you want to continue editing.
The available format choices appear in the Docs download menu; Google’s general instructions are on its download help page.
Email a Word or PDF copy instead
If you want to send the document as an attachment rather than save a local copy first, select File > Email as attachment, then choose Word or PDF as the attachment format. Google describes this option in its guidance for switching from Microsoft Word to Google Docs.

Can you save a Google Doc as an EPUB?
Google’s Android help lists EPUB among the export formats for Docs, alongside DOCX, RTF, TXT, PDF, ODT, and HTML as a ZIP. That format list is specific to the Android documentation; it does not establish that the same option appears on every platform. On a computer, check File > Download and choose from the formats actually shown there. See Google Docs help for Android.

Which format should you choose?
- PDF: Choose this for a shareable copy whose page layout you want to preserve, then inspect the downloaded file or print preview.
- Word (.docx): Choose this when the recipient needs to edit the document in Microsoft Word.
- EPUB: Choose it when the export option is available in your Docs app and you need an EPUB file; Google’s cited format list is for Android.
