Finish any file transfers, saves, or other work on the USB drive, then use your operating system’s eject control and wait for its confirmation before unplugging. On Windows, eject it from the taskbar; on a Mac, use Finder; and in Ubuntu, use the Files app. Linux steps vary by distribution and desktop environment, so Ubuntu’s instructions are not universal.

Quick comparison

System Where to eject When it is safe to unplug
Windows 10 or 11 Taskbar notification area > Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media > Eject the correct drive Windows displays the “Safe To Remove Hardware” notification or the drive disappears from the menu. Microsoft Support
macOS Finder > File > Eject, the eject button beside the drive in Finder’s sidebar, or drag the drive icon to Trash The drive disappears from Finder. Apple Support
Ubuntu Linux, using Files Click the eject icon beside the device in the sidebar, or right-click its name and select Eject The drive is ejected. If Ubuntu reports that it is busy, close files using it and retry. Ubuntu Help

Before you eject the drive

  • Finish copying or moving files, saving documents, and any other work involving the drive.
  • Close files and applications that are using files stored on it.
  • Use the eject command for the correct USB drive. Wait for the system’s confirmation or for the drive to disappear from its listed devices before unplugging it.

Safely remove a USB drive in Windows 10 or 11

  1. Find the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon in the taskbar notification area. If it is not visible, select the option to show hidden icons.
  2. Select the icon, then choose Eject for the USB drive you intend to remove.
  3. Unplug the drive only after Windows displays the Safe To Remove Hardware notification or the drive disappears from the menu.

If the taskbar control is unavailable, first check that Windows recognizes the connected drive. Microsoft also documents an alternate route: open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, find the removable hardware under Other devices, and select Remove. Wait until it disappears from that section before disconnecting. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; its interface may differ from current Windows 11 screens. Microsoft Support: Safely remove hardware in Windows

Safely remove a USB drive on a Mac

  1. In Finder, select the USB drive and choose File > Eject. You can instead click the eject button beside the drive in Finder’s sidebar or drag its desktop icon to Trash.
  2. Wait for the drive to disappear from Finder before unplugging it.

If macOS will not eject the disk, an app or another user may be using one or more files on it. Close the files and applications that may be accessing the drive, then try ejecting again. Apple Support: Connect and use other storage devices with your Mac

Safely remove a USB drive in Ubuntu

  1. Open the Ubuntu Files app and find the USB device in the sidebar.
  2. Click the eject icon beside the device, or right-click its name and select Eject.
  3. Unplug the drive once it has been ejected.

If Ubuntu displays a volume-busy warning, cancel the ejection, close the files being used by an application, and retry. Ejecting anyway can cause errors in applications that still have those files open. These steps describe Ubuntu’s Files app; other Linux distributions and desktop environments may use different controls. For terminal instructions, consult your distribution’s documentation so you can identify the correct device and unmount it safely. Ubuntu Help: Safely remove an external drive

If the drive will not eject

Close anything using the drive

Close documents and applications that may be accessing files on the USB drive, then try the operating system’s eject control again. A busy-volume warning on Ubuntu or a failed-ejection message on a Mac is a reason to address the open files—not a signal that it is safe to unplug.

Check whether the drive is recognized

On Windows, the taskbar eject icon may not appear if no removable device is connected or Windows does not recognize it. Confirm that the intended drive is connected and appears in the system before trying to eject it.

Follow Apple’s escalation steps if a Mac disk remains stuck

  1. Log out of your Mac, log back in, and try ejecting the disk again.
  2. If it still will not eject, shut down the Mac, disconnect the disk, and start the Mac again.

This is Apple’s documented troubleshooting sequence for a disk that cannot be ejected; do not disconnect it while the Mac is running as a substitute for ejecting. Apple Support: If you can’t eject a disk on Mac, try these solutions
