To delete a project’s node_modules folder on Windows, open PowerShell in the project directory, preview the target, and then run the same recursive command without -WhatIf. Check the path before confirming: the command permanently removes the directory through normal file deletion, but does not promise secure data erasure.
Delete node_modules safely with PowerShell

Open PowerShell in the project directory. Confirm where you are with
Get-Location, and check that the folder exists withTest-Path -LiteralPath .node_modules. -
Preview the deletion:
Remove-Item -LiteralPath .node_modules -Recurse -WhatIfReview the preview and make sure it names the intended project-local

If the target is correct, run the command without

Choose between removing dependencies and reinstalling them
Use PowerShell when you want the directory gone and left absent. If you want to remove the existing dependencies and immediately install a clean set, use npm ci instead.

What npm ci does
Run npm ci from the project directory. It requires a package-lock.json and fails if the lockfile and package.json do not match. It removes the existing node_modules as part of the installation and does not change package.json or package-lock.json. It is therefore a clean reinstall workflow, not a way to leave dependencies absent. Details are in the npm ci documentation.
What “for good” means—and what it does not
The PowerShell command removes the folder through the normal filesystem operation. The cited documentation does not claim that this securely overwrites the data or makes it unrecoverable, so treat ordinary deletion as directory removal, not forensic erasure.

If deletion fails
A locked-file error, an access-denied error, and a path-length error can have different causes. Do not assume that running as administrator or adding -Force is a universal fix. Microsoft notes that -Force can address some hidden or read-only items but cannot override security restrictions; it should not be added reflexively to an uncertain path.
When the error mentions a long path
Microsoft documents the traditional Windows MAX_PATH limit as 260 characters. On Windows 10 version 1607 and later, many common Win32 functions can use longer paths when the system setting is enabled and the application opts in. Enabling the setting alone does not make every tool or application long-path aware. See Microsoft’s maximum path length documentation.
