To safely eject a USB drive in Windows, use Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media, choose the correct drive, and wait for Windows to confirm it is safe to remove before unplugging it. Microsoft recommends safely removing USB flash drives and external hard drives to avoid data loss.
Safely eject a USB drive from the taskbar
- Find Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media in the taskbar notification area. If you do not see it, select Show hidden icons.
- Right-click the icon and select Eject for the drive you want to disconnect. Check the device name carefully if more than one removable device is connected.
- Wait for the Safe To Remove Hardware notification and for the device to disappear from the eject menu. Then unplug the drive.
These steps follow Microsoft’s instructions for Windows 11 and Windows 10: Safely remove hardware in Windows.
If the eject icon is missing
First, select Show hidden icons in the taskbar notification area. If the icon still is not shown, enable it in taskbar settings:
Windows 11
- Right-click the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Other system tray icons.
- Turn on Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media.
Windows 10
- Open taskbar settings and select Select which icons appear on the taskbar.
- Turn on Windows Explorer: Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media.
Windows 10 may show more than one Windows Explorer entry, so check the full label. The icon may also be absent if no removable hardware is connected or Windows does not recognize the device.

Use Settings if the taskbar method is unavailable
Windows 11
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Under Other devices, find the drive and expand its entry.
- Select Remove next to that device.
- Wait for it to disappear from Other devices, then unplug it.
Windows 10
Microsoft provides a corresponding route through Settings > Devices. Select the listed device for removal and wait until it disappears from the list before disconnecting it.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 continues to function, but Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, and recommends moving to Windows 11. This support change does not alter the eject steps above.
