Yes—a multiport desktop charger can charge several compatible devices at once, provided its total output and the power available on each port suit the devices. Check the charger’s simultaneous-use output table: its headline wattage may be shared, so a port’s maximum rating may not be available when other ports are in use.
What happens when you plug in more than one device?
With USB Power Delivery (USB PD), a compatible charger and device negotiate power; the device takes the power it requires rather than automatically receiving the charger’s full advertised maximum. USB-IF says PD is designed to optimize power management across multiple peripherals. That does not mean every device gets its preferred charging rate in every multiport setup: the charger still has a finite output budget, and its port-allocation design determines what is available.
USB-IF describes two useful port behaviors:
- Assured Capacity Ports: each can independently provide its rated capacity.
- Shared Capacity Ports: available output depends on the power remaining in a budget shared by a group of ports.
On a shared-capacity charger, connecting another device can change the power available to a port already in use. The devices may continue charging, but one or more may charge more slowly. USB-IF’s multi-port charger material explains the distinction between assured and shared capacity.
How to check whether your charger can handle your devices
- Find the devices’ charging requirements. Check each device’s manual or manufacturer specification for supported charging input and any required charging standard. Do not assume that a USB-C connector alone guarantees the device will use a particular charging mode or speed.
- Find the charger’s total output and port ratings. Look at its label, manual, or manufacturer product page. Total wattage describes the overall budget; a port’s individual rating describes its output under the conditions specified for that port.
- Read the simultaneous-use output table. Find the row or diagram for the exact ports you plan to use together. Confirm the output allocated to each port in that combination, especially if ports share capacity. Do not add individual port maximums and assume the charger can provide that sum at once.
- Check cables as well as ports. Use the cable specified by the device or charger manufacturer, or one rated for the charging capability you need. Higher USB-C PD power depends on supported equipment and cable requirements; a cable’s connector shape by itself does not establish its power capability.
- Check product-specific safety and compatibility information. Consult the charger and cable documentation and look for verifiable safety information for the exact products. General standards or safety guidance cannot establish that an unidentified charger or cable has been evaluated or certified.
Why the charger’s wattage label is not enough
A charger advertised with a total wattage may distribute that power differently depending on which ports are occupied. For example, a product’s output table might show one port’s rating when used alone and a different allocation when two ports are active. The relevant figure is the output listed for your actual combination of ports, not the highest number printed beside any single port.

USB-IF lists USB PD 3.1 as supporting capability up to 240 W with supported equipment. That is a standard capability, not a recommended charger size and not a guarantee that a particular charger, cable, or device supports that power. UL Solutions also discusses safety evaluation for USB-C Extended Power Range products; the specific product’s documentation is needed to establish what applies.

Check the exact device and charger specifications before relying on a setup involving proprietary charging systems, very high-power equipment, a damaged cable, or a product with unknown specifications. The general behavior of USB PD does not establish compatibility for every device or combination. Stop using damaged cables, and replace them with a properly specified cable.
