You can run Windows apps on a MacBook Air, but the right method depends on whether it has an Apple silicon chip or an Intel processor. On Apple silicon, the documented local option is Windows 11 Arm in a virtual machine such as Parallels Desktop; on compatible Intel models, Apple documents Windows 10 through Boot Camp. A Windows 365 Cloud PC is another option when streaming Windows suits your needs.
Check whether your MacBook Air has Apple silicon or Intel
- Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac.
- Look for Chip to identify Apple silicon, or Processor to identify an Intel Mac. Apple lists the MacBook Air (M1, 2020) and Air models introduced in 2022 or later among its Apple silicon Macs. Apple’s guide to Mac computers with Apple silicon explains how to identify them.
This distinction matters: Boot Camp is for compatible Intel Macs, not Apple silicon Macs.
Choose how you want to use Windows

For a MacBook Air with Apple silicon, Microsoft’s guidance identifies Parallels Desktop versions 18, 19, and 20 as authorized to run Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise virtual machines on M1, M2, and M3 Macs. That statement is specific to the named chips and software versions; check Microsoft’s current guidance before relying on it for newer hardware or versions. Microsoft’s Windows 11 options for M1, M2, and M3 Macs also describes Windows 365 as a way to access Windows from a Mac.
Run Windows apps locally on an Apple silicon Air
- Check whether the Windows app and any connected hardware you need support Windows 11 Arm. Prefer a 64-bit Arm version of the app when available.
- Confirm the current Parallels Desktop edition, supported macOS, Windows build, and Microsoft’s authorization for your Mac before purchasing or installing.
- Install Parallels Desktop, then use its Apple silicon setup instructions to install Windows 11 Arm from an Arm-based installation image. Parallels says Windows 10 Arm is no longer supported in its M-series Mac setup because Microsoft no longer supports it. See Parallels’ Windows 11 installation guide for Apple silicon.
- Install the Windows app inside the virtual machine and test the features you depend on, including hardware connections and graphics-intensive functions.
Windows 11 Arm can also run many x86 and x64 apps through emulation, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Microsoft’s guidance flags limitations for DirectX 12-dependent apps and games, some nested-virtualization features, and 32-bit Arm apps in the described Parallels configuration. Parallels says some x86 apps may not work; its listed graphics capabilities are DirectX 11.1 and OpenGL 4.3, and nested virtualization is unavailable. Verify drivers and specialist software
An app can launch successfully yet still fail to work with a device or a required component. An x86 or x64 driver is not automatically equivalent to an Arm64 driver. Before depending on a printer, scanner, peripheral, game anti-cheat system, or professional application, check its vendor’s current requirements for Windows 11 Arm and virtual machines.
Account for Windows licensing
Microsoft says you need a separate Windows 11 Pro license if you do not already have one, and each Pro virtual-machine instance needs its own unique license. Check Microsoft’s current licensing terms for your Windows edition and use case before setup.

Use Boot Camp on a compatible Intel Air
Apple documents Boot Camp for MacBook Air models introduced from 2012 through 2020, excluding the M1 (2020). Its guide covers installing Windows 10, not a blanket guarantee that every Intel Air supports a current Windows release. Check the exact model and Apple’s requirements in Install Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp Assistant.
- Confirm that your Air is an eligible Intel model and review Apple’s Boot Camp requirements.
- Open Boot Camp Assistant and follow its prompts to create a Windows partition and install Windows.
- When you want to switch operating systems, restart and choose macOS or Windows. Apple’s restart guide explains the startup selection process.
Boot Camp is a dual-boot setup, not a way to keep Windows apps open beside Mac apps. You must restart to move between the two operating systems.

When a Cloud PC is the better fit
Windows 365 delivers a cloud-hosted Windows environment to your Mac rather than installing Windows locally. It may suit an organization that already provides Cloud PCs, but access depends on organizational eligibility, network needs, and current service terms. Microsoft’s Mac options guidance identifies it as a streaming route.

Check these details before committing to a method
- Chip: Apple silicon or Intel determines which installation routes apply.
- App and driver compatibility: Verify the exact app, required features, and any hardware drivers with their vendors.
- Graphics and virtualization: Games, specialist graphics software, and apps that require nested virtualization may not work as expected in a virtual machine.
- Local or streamed use: A virtual machine runs on the Mac; Windows 365 streams a cloud environment.
- Licensing and terms: Check Windows licensing, service eligibility, and current software-version support.
- Restart requirement: Boot Camp requires restarting to switch operating systems; a virtual machine runs within macOS.
