You can run Playwright screenshot tests in GitHub Actions without a runner charge for a public repository using GitHub-hosted standard runners. For a private repository, “free” depends on the minutes and storage included with your account plan; usage beyond those allowances can be billed. Self-hosted runners have no GitHub Actions minute charge, but you supply and operate the machine.
This guide sets up a JavaScript Playwright workflow, saves its report as an artifact, and explains what to check before treating a private workflow as free.
What you need before adding the workflow
- A JavaScript project with Playwright included in its dependencies and a committed lockfile, so
npm cican install the versions recorded by the project. - At least one Playwright test that checks a screenshot or visual baseline. GitHub Actions runs the suite; it does not create visual assertions automatically.
- A GitHub repository and permission to add files under
.github/workflows/.
Playwright tests can run on any CI provider, and Playwright documents GitHub Actions as a supported setup: Playwright CI documentation.
Add a GitHub Actions workflow
Create .github/workflows/playwright.yml in the repository. This example follows Playwright’s JavaScript workflow pattern: it checks out the code, sets up Node, installs locked dependencies and browser dependencies, runs tests, then uploads the report even if tests fail (unless the job is cancelled).

The action versions and 30-day retention shown here reflect the Playwright documentation’s example configuration; they are not universal retention requirements. Check the current CI guide when setting up or maintaining the workflow, and adjust branch names and Node configuration for your project.
Make sure the report exists
The example uploads playwright-report/. Configure Playwright to produce that report, for example in playwright.config.js:
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
reporter: 'html',
});
If your project uses a different config file or report directory, update the workflow’s path to match. Add Playwright to the project dependencies and commit the resulting lockfile before relying on npm ci.

Write a screenshot assertion that CI can run
Put visual assertions in the regular Playwright test suite. For example, a test can visit a page and compare it with a stored screenshot baseline:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});
Replace the URL and test with your own application. On an initial run, Playwright may need a baseline generated and reviewed for your environment; commit approved baselines so CI can compare against them. A failed visual comparison should be investigated rather than automatically accepted as a new baseline.
Keep screenshot results consistent
Screenshot comparisons are sensitive to the rendering environment. Browser versions, operating-system dependencies, fonts, viewport settings, and page state can all affect pixels. Use a consistent browser and environment for creating baselines and running CI. Playwright documents containers as one way to isolate dependencies and make screenshot or visual-regression environments more consistent; its CI guidance also describes using a single worker when stability matters.

What “free” means in GitHub Actions
Cost depends on repository visibility, runner type, account allowance, actual workflow runtime, and artifact storage. GitHub says standard GitHub-hosted runner usage is free for public repositories. Private repositories use the free minutes and storage included with the account’s plan; amounts vary, and overage can be billed. Self-hosted runners do not incur GitHub Actions minute charges, although you are responsible for the machine and its operation. Check GitHub Actions billing and the account’s current billing details before estimating private-repository costs.
| Setup | GitHub Actions minute charge | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Public repository, GitHub-hosted standard runner | Free runner usage, according to GitHub’s billing documentation | Artifact and other applicable usage; confirm current account details. |
| Private repository, GitHub-hosted runner | Uses account-plan allowances; excess usage can be billed | Included minutes, storage, actual run time, and overage rates for the account. |
| Self-hosted runner | No GitHub Actions minute charge | You provide, maintain, and pay for the machine and its operating costs. |
Do not assume that a private repository is free simply because the workflow runs successfully. For private projects, calculate expected usage from the workflow’s run frequency and duration, then compare it with the account’s available allowance and artifact storage use.
Inspect a run and retrieve its report
- Push the workflow file and test code, or open a pull request targeting one of the configured branches.
- In the repository, open the Actions tab and select the Playwright screenshot tests run.
- Check the job log to see whether dependency installation, browser setup, or a test failed.
- When the job has an uploaded artifact, download
playwright-reportfrom the run summary and open the HTML report locally.
The example configures the artifact to be retained for 30 days. Change the retention value to suit the repository’s needs and applicable storage allowance.

Troubleshooting common failures
npm ci fails
Check that the lockfile is committed and synchronized with package.json. npm ci installs from the lockfile rather than resolving an unconstrained dependency set.
Playwright cannot find a browser or system library
Ensure the browser-install step runs before tests and includes --with-deps on the Linux runner. If the project uses a custom container or operating system, follow the corresponding Playwright CI setup rather than assuming the Ubuntu dependencies apply.
The artifact is missing
Verify that the reporter writes to playwright-report/ and that the upload step’s path matches the actual output directory. The upload step is skipped if the job is cancelled; an earlier setup failure may also prevent the directory from being created.

Screenshots differ in CI but pass locally
Compare browser and OS environments, viewport and device scale, fonts, page data, and timing. Generate or review baselines using the same controlled environment as CI; a container is one documented option for dependency consistency.
A private workflow unexpectedly costs money
Check repository visibility, runner type, account plan allowances, consumed minutes, and artifact/storage usage in the GitHub billing details. Private-repository allowances differ by account plan, and usage beyond included amounts can be billed.
Or skip the browser setup:
If you need a clean capture of a website rather than a Playwright visual-regression test against committed baselines, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its API can capture PNG, JPEG, or WebP; see the API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be disabled individually. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
