Use Playwright Test to compare screenshots of your running SvelteKit app against approved reference images. Start with a few important routes and states, keep the browser environment consistent, review every image diff, and update baselines only when a visual change is intentional.
What visual regression testing checks
A visual regression test captures a rendered page and compares it with an approved screenshot. It can catch appearance changes that a markup-only snapshot may not detect: shifted layout, missing content, altered colors, or broken spacing. Playwright Test supports this with toHaveScreenshot(). See the Playwright visual comparisons guide.
The workflow below tests the app in a browser. The cited Playwright documentation is framework-agnostic; it does not provide a SvelteKit-specific server configuration. Use your project’s existing development or preview server and its actual local URL.
Choose routes and states worth protecting
Begin with a small set of pages where a visual mistake would matter, such as the public landing page and a key user journey. For each, choose a few meaningful states rather than trying to capture every possible combination.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- The default page view.
- A populated state with representative data.
- An important empty, validation, or error state.
Keep visual tests focused. A smaller suite with stable, useful screenshots is easier to review than a large collection of noisy images.

Write a screenshot assertion
Create a test such as tests/visual.spec.ts and navigate to a representative route:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:4173/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Playwright’s assertion produces a reference screenshot on the initial run. On later runs it compares the current rendering with that baseline. Playwright captures repeatedly until it obtains two consecutive matching screenshots, which helps avoid saving an image while the page is still changing. Baselines are stored with the relevant test and should be reviewed and committed to version control; details are in the snapshot documentation.

Make screenshots repeatable
Screenshot comparisons are meaningful only when the conditions are sufficiently consistent. Playwright notes that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power state, and headless mode can all affect rendering. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment whenever possible.
- Pin the environment: Use the same operating system image and browser version for baseline generation and CI comparisons. Containers can help keep CI consistent; see Playwright’s CI guide.
- Control data and network responses: Use predictable fixtures and mock responses for services outside the test’s control. Playwright recommends isolating tests and controlling responses in its best practices.
- Stabilize changing content: Timestamps, animations, ads, embeds, and rotating content can create noise. Prefer controlling the source of change. Playwright also supports a screenshot stylesheet through
stylePathto hide or adjust volatile elements; use it selectively so it does not conceal real defects. - Keep capture settings steady: Use a consistent viewport and relevant browser settings across baseline creation and later runs.
Review diffs and update baselines deliberately
When a test fails, inspect the expected image, actual image, and diff. Decide whether the change is intended before taking action. If it is an unintended regression, fix the application. If it is an approved design change, regenerate snapshots explicitly:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review and commit the resulting image changes alongside the code change. Do not automatically update all baselines after a failure: that can accept an unintended UI change as the new reference. Playwright documents the update workflow and snapshot storage in its visual comparisons guide.
Run the suite in CI
Set CI to install project dependencies and the required Playwright browser dependencies before running the tests. Use a stable browser and operating-system image that matches the environment used to produce the baselines. If CI resources are constrained, start with a conservative worker count and increase parallelism only after results remain repeatable. Playwright’s CI documentation covers installation and CI setup.

Use component-level screenshots when that is the right scope
For reusable components with many visual states, testing each through a complete route may be unnecessary. Playwright’s component-testing documentation describes a framework-agnostic approach: the application team provides a small gallery page served by its development server, and Playwright navigates to it to test components. The documentation names Svelte among supported frameworks where the dev server can render the components. This is a gallery-based approach, not a turnkey SvelteKit-specific configuration.
Whole-page route tests still matter for checking composition, navigation, layout, and user journeys. A component gallery and route-level tests cover different risks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Consider hosted review workflows if local snapshots are not enough
Keep local Playwright snapshots when the team wants to own baseline files and review diffs in its normal code workflow. Hosted options can add a visual review interface or fit a story-based process; compare tools by test scope, baseline location, approval workflow, browser and viewport coverage, CI needs, dynamic-content handling, debugging detail, and service cost.
| Approach | Useful when | Baseline and review | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | You need a screenshot API or MCP server for developer workflows or AI agents. | One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; responses identify page verdict and billing status. | It captures pages on demand rather than managing an approved visual-test baseline and image-diff review workflow. |
| Playwright screenshot assertions | You already use browser end-to-end tests and want route or page checks. | Local image snapshots beside tests; review diffs and commit approved baselines. | Your team owns snapshot files and environment consistency; rendering differences can add noise. |
| Playwright component gallery | You need isolated reusable component states. | Browser-rendered components asserted through Playwright. | Your team owns the gallery page and story discovery. |
| Storybook visual tests with Chromatic | Your UI is represented as Storybook stories and you want a review panel and CI status workflow. | Story screenshots and cloud review through Chromatic. | Requires Storybook setup and a Chromatic project. The Storybook version 8 guide documents the @chromatic-com/storybook addon and lists Storybook 7.6 or higher as its requirement; confirm current requirements before setup. |
| Chromatic for Playwright | Existing Playwright journeys should produce hosted visual snapshots. | Its integration uploads test-page archives for cloud review. | Requires a Chromatic project and token. The cited Chromatic setup says Chrome must be present and supports Playwright 1.38.0 or later; verify current setup details. |
| Applitools | You are comparing hosted web visual-testing platforms. | The vendor describes checks from components through pages and broad browser coverage. | Validate framework integration, supported browsers, pricing, and program terms for your setup against the Applitools web testing page. |
Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
- A screenshot differs on every run: Look for changing data, animation, timestamps, or external content. Stabilize or mock the cause; only filter a region with
stylePathwhen hiding it cannot mask a meaningful regression. - A baseline differs between a developer machine and CI: Compare operating system, browser version, headless mode, viewport, and rendering settings. Run baseline generation and checks in the same environment.
- The screenshot captures an incomplete page: Ensure the app server is available at the configured URL and that the page has reached the intended state before asserting. A route that fails to load should be fixed as a page/test setup issue, not accepted as a new baseline.
- Updating snapshots makes the failure disappear but the UI is wrong: Restore the old baseline, inspect the diff, and fix the application. Update snapshots only after confirming the visual change is intended.
- Too many route tests are slow or hard to maintain: Move isolated reusable-component states into a Playwright gallery while keeping a smaller set of route tests for composition and journeys.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-off capture rather than an approved baseline-and-diff test, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and an MCP server. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.
