To run a test quickly, open its file, place the caret inside the test method or class, and press Ctrl+Shift+F10. You can also click the Run icon in the editor gutter beside the test and choose the run action. The results appear in the Run tool window.
Run a test method or class
- Open the test file in the editor.
- Place the caret inside the method or class you want to run.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+F10, or click the gutter Run icon beside the method or class and choose the run action.
IntelliJ IDEA uses the caret location to determine the target. For JUnit, you can also run a test class from its class gutter icon. See JetBrains’ Run tests and Get started with JUnit documentation. Run tests in a folder or package
- In the Project tool window, select the folder containing the tests.
- Use Ctrl+Shift+F10 or open the selection’s context menu and choose Run Tests.
This runs tests at the selected folder scope rather than only the method or class under the editor caret. The available options can depend on how the project’s test framework is configured.
Run selected methods or reuse a test configuration
Run selected methods
Use the Structure tool window to select one or more test methods, then run the selection. IntelliJ IDEA creates a temporary configuration for that run; you can save and edit it if you want to reuse it.

Save a repeatable run
Running a test creates a temporary run configuration. Save it to keep its settings for later runs or to share them. Select the configuration in the Run widget, then press Shift+F10 or click the Run control.
Use a saved configuration when you need a consistent target or customized settings. For the one-time run of a method or class, the editor shortcut is quicker.

Run tests before committing
The Commit tool window can run a test class or a broader set of uncommitted tests. Configured commit checks run when you commit. JetBrains documents this feature for Git and Mercurial; see Run tests for the supported workflow.
Read results, stop a run, or investigate a failure
Inspect test output and status in the Run tool window. Test gutter icons also reflect test state. To stop a running test, click the Stop control or press Ctrl+F2.

The default failed-test rerun action includes both tests that failed and tests that did not start. If you want to rerun only failed tests, adjust the relevant JUnit or TestNG run configuration.
To investigate a failure, set a breakpoint and choose Debug from the test’s gutter menu. IntelliJ IDEA runs the test in the debugger so you can inspect execution.
To rerun tests automatically after related source changes, enable Rerun Automatically on the test-results toolbar. These result and rerun options are described in JetBrains’ Run tests help.

Coverage is a separate run mode: choose Run with Coverage for a test or run configuration. IntelliJ IDEA presents coverage results in the Coverage tool window, the Project view, and the editor.

- Green: code was executed.
- Yellow: code was partially executed, such as when only some conditional branches ran.
- Red: code was not executed.
Coverage details depend on the selected runner. For example, line-level information about which tests cover a line has JUnit/TestNG and runner or configuration requirements. See JetBrains’ Code coverage and Editor gutter documentation.
When IntelliJ IDEA does not recognize a test
Test setup and available gutter actions depend on the framework. Check the framework-specific instructions for your project if a test is not recognized or a runner option is missing. JetBrains provides separate guides for Jest and Testing TypeScript, as well as its JUnit guide.
