You can keep recorded IIT lecture videos streaming to YouTube Live by running an encoder such as FFmpeg on an always-on Linux VPS, connected to a YouTube stream URL and private stream key. First confirm you have permission to rebroadcast the specific recordings. Then enable YouTube Live, configure and test the encoder, and add monitoring: a VPS and process supervisor can reduce hands-on work, but neither guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
1. Confirm you have the right to rebroadcast the lectures
Before copying files to a server, identify the specific IIT, course, recording, and rights holder. Check the recording’s license and obtain authorization for YouTube retransmission, including territories and archived replay where relevant. A lecture being publicly available, educational, or already posted on YouTube does not by itself grant rebroadcast rights.
YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights to use the live content. YouTube also warns that copyright detection can interrupt a stream; some third-party licensing arrangements may require the rights holder to allowlist your channel. Ask the rights holder about this if a licensed recording could match Content ID. YouTube states: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” YouTube livestream terms and conditions.

- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room.
- Create a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one under Manage. Configure its title, visibility, and other details there.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key as a password: keep it out of public scripts, repositories, logs, and screenshots.
- If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow for YouTube’s possible enablement delay of up to 24 hours before going live.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering the stream URL and key in the encoder. Keep the actual key in a restricted configuration file or secret store and substitute a placeholder in examples. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Plan how to handle the replay as well as the live broadcast. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours; do not assume one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived as a single complete video. Check current Live Control Room behavior and choose a schedule and segmentation approach that fits your channel and archive needs.
3. Prepare the Linux VPS and media
The VPS acts as the always-on host for Linux, the lecture files, and the encoder process. There is no universal VPS CPU, memory, disk, or bandwidth specification for this job: requirements vary with whether you copy or transcode media, the stream bitrate, file sizes, and your provider’s limits.

- Confirm you have enough disk space for the lecture files and any working files.
- Check the VPS provider’s sustained network and outbound-transfer limits against your planned stream bitrate and run time.
- Inspect the source videos’ codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio tracks, and duration before choosing an encoder configuration.
- Install an FFmpeg build that supports the codecs and output protocol you intend to use. Verify the installed build rather than assuming every package includes the same features.
FFmpeg is one possible software encoder; YouTube’s official instructions describe the encoder workflow generically and do not prescribe a particular FFmpeg command.

YouTube currently documents RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Choose bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than copying a number from an unrelated tutorial. RTMPS is RTMP carried over SSL/TLS. For RTMPS-specific endpoint handling, Google’s API documentation specifies an RTMPS ingestion endpoint and port 443: RTMPS ingestion. Use the exact URL supplied for your stream and ensure outbound access to the relevant endpoint and port is permitted by the VPS network.
For a recording already encoded in a suitable format, determine whether it can be sent without transcoding; if conversion is needed, account for the additional CPU load. Do not select output settings until you have checked the actual source file and the installed FFmpeg capabilities.

5. Configure and start the encoder
Build the FFmpeg input and output arguments around the source file’s properties, your chosen YouTube-compatible settings, and the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. The command is installation- and media-dependent, so validate it against your own FFmpeg build and test file rather than treating a generic command as a guaranteed working recipe.

- Configure the input path and whether the file should repeat; verify the loop behavior with a short test.
- Set video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s guidance and the media’s needs.
- Send the output to the RTMPS URL with the private stream key supplied through restricted configuration rather than embedding it in a public script.
- Run the process interactively first and watch its output for input, codec, authentication, and connection errors.
A service supervisor such as systemd can start a configured process at boot and restart it after an exit. That is an implementation option, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming: reconnect behavior, repeated-file behavior, service dependencies, and monitoring must be validated in your own setup.

6. Test the broadcast and plan for recovery
- Start with a short private or unlisted test when appropriate.
- Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Confirm the picture, sound, synchronization, and selected stream settings.
- Test what happens if the encoder exits or the network connection drops. Verify that the encoder reconnects as expected and that any supervisor restarts it correctly.
- Schedule or publish the intended stream only after the test passes, and set up monitoring or alerts for a stopped process, failed ingest, or exhausted storage.
Neither VPS uptime, available bandwidth, nor YouTube ingest continuity is guaranteed by this setup. A supervisor can restart a process after it exits, but it does not replace monitoring or prove that a restarted encoder will reconnect successfully.
Copyright permission and monetization are separate questions
Permission to rebroadcast does not guarantee that a channel can monetize the stream. YouTube says live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program, subject to its policies. Its reused-content policy applies to live streams and can make minimally changed or repetitive rebroadcasts ineligible even where the operator has permission. Original commentary, substantive modification, or other meaningful educational or entertainment value may matter to review; permission alone is not an eligibility guarantee. Cost and operational trade-offs
Estimate the VPS expense from the server plan you choose, media storage, outbound transfer, and any compute needed for transcoding. Those figures depend on the provider, workload, stream bitrate, and run time, so there is no universal VPS price or specification to quote here. Compare that operational work with a cloud streaming service by storage and egress limits, supported media quality, recovery behavior, monitoring, terms, and recurring cost. Check each provider’s current terms before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
