Commit and review screenshot baselines, keep CI’s browser environment consistent with the one used to create them, and save reports and test output as artifacts so failures can be investigated.
What the pipeline does
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion captures a reference image on its first run, then compares later captures against that baseline. In CI, the job installs the project dependencies, runs the tests in a compatible browser environment, and retains output for review.
Playwright’s GitLab example uses mcr.microsoft.com/playwright:v1.63.0-noble. That is the tag shown in the reviewed official documentation, not a permanent recommendation: check the current tag and align it with the Playwright version installed by your project. See the Playwright GitLab CI guidance.
Configure a screenshot test
Use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion after navigating to the page and waiting for the UI state you intend to verify. For example:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
The first run creates the reference image in a snapshot directory associated with the test. Commit that image alongside the test, then review any changed baseline as a code change. To update references deliberately, run npx playwright test --update-snapshots locally in the intended baseline environment, inspect the images, and commit only the expected changes. Do not make automatic snapshot updates part of a normal CI failure path.
Add the GitLab CI job
For an npm project, put a job like this in .gitlab-ci.yml. It assumes the project’s Playwright configuration writes an HTML report to playwright-report/ and test output to test-results/; change the artifact paths if your configuration uses different directories.
stages:
- test
playwright-screenshots:
stage: test

variables:
CI: "true"
script:
- npm ci
- npx playwright test
artifacts:
when: always
paths:
- playwright-report/
- test-results/
expire_in: 1 week
Set the reporter and output directory in playwright.config.ts so they match those paths. A useful CI-oriented configuration is:

outputDir: 'test-results',

},
});
GitLab artifact paths are relative to $CI_PROJECT_DIR. Setting when: always retains the report and test output when tests fail, but GitLab does not upload artifacts if the job times out. See the GitLab CI YAML reference for artifacts.
Use a different package manager
Keep the same job structure, but replace npm ci with the install command that respects your project’s lockfile—for example, the appropriate frozen or immutable install mode for your package manager. Do not omit the lockfile-respecting install step: repeatable dependency versions help make visual results reproducible.
Install browsers only when needed
The Playwright container route is intended to supply a compatible browser environment. If you use an environment without the required browser binaries or operating-system dependencies, add npx playwright install --with-deps after dependency installation. Avoid adding that step blindly to the prebuilt-image route; first confirm what the chosen image contains and that its browser version matches the project package. Playwright’s CI instructions describe browser installation options at Playwright CI.

Keep screenshot baselines reproducible
Pixel comparisons can change for reasons unrelated to an application regression. Playwright notes that screenshot rendering can vary with the host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its guidance is direct: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” See Playwright visual comparisons.
- Generate baselines and run CI with the same operating system or container, browser version, browser settings, and headless mode where possible.
- A baseline generated on macOS or Windows may differ from a Linux CI capture, including because fonts and rendering differ. Prefer creating and updating snapshots in the CI-equivalent environment.
- Stabilize application data when possible: timestamps, rotating banners, and embedded content can make screenshots change between runs.
- For volatile regions that cannot be stabilized at the source, use Playwright’s
stylePathoption to apply a stylesheet that hides or normalizes them during screenshot comparison.
Keep baseline changes reviewable. A changed image should reflect an intentional UI change or a deliberate adjustment to test state, not merely a way to silence a failing assertion.

parallel: 4
script:
- npm ci
- npx playwright test --shard=$CI_NODE_INDEX/$CI_NODE_TOTAL
The value 4 creates four parallel jobs; adjust it to match available runner capacity. Sharding can reduce wall-clock time, but it uses more concurrent jobs and should be tested with the project’s output configuration so parallel runs do not overwrite shared files. Follow Playwright’s GitLab CI sharding example.
Cache dependencies thoughtfully
Start by considering a lockfile-keyed GitLab cache for package-manager dependencies if installation time warrants it. Browser binaries are a less automatic win: Playwright does not recommend caching them by default because restoring them can take about as long as downloading them, and Linux system dependencies cannot be cached. If you choose to cache browser binaries, key the cache to a hash of the Playwright version so it does not silently reuse incompatible browsers. See Playwright’s browser-caching guidance and GitLab caching.

- Browser launch fails: Check that the container tag and installed Playwright package are aligned and that the environment has the required browser binaries and OS dependencies. For browser-launch diagnostics, run
DEBUG=pw:browser npx playwright test. - Screenshot differs only in CI: Compare the baseline and CI operating system/container, browser version, headless mode, settings, and fonts. Stabilize dynamic data or use a
stylePathstylesheet for volatile elements. - Report or test output is missing after a failure: Confirm that the reporter and
outputDiractually write to the configured artifact paths, that the paths are relative to the project directory, and that artifacts usewhen: always. A timed-out job will not upload artifacts. - Sharded runs interfere with each other: Check whether jobs write to a shared location and adjust the output setup so concurrent jobs do not overwrite output. Reduce or remove sharding if runner capacity is insufficient.
- Dependency or browser versions drift: Use the lockfile-respecting install command and select a browser image compatible with the Playwright package version rather than treating an example image tag as timeless.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page rather than test your own application with Playwright’s visual assertions, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is not a replacement for Playwright snapshot tests and their committed baselines; it is an alternative for generating page screenshots without setting up a browser job. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if my screenshot baseline needs an update?
Run npx playwright test --update-snapshots deliberately, inspect the generated image changes, and commit the approved baselines.
Can I run this job without the Playwright Docker image?
Yes, provided the runner environment has the browser binaries and operating-system dependencies required by the installed Playwright version; the prebuilt image is the documented GitLab starting point.
