To use OpenRouter in OpenCode, create an OpenRouter API key, connect it in OpenCode, then choose a model. In the terminal interface, the shortest documented route is /connect → select OpenRouter → paste your key → /models. Desktop users can connect OpenRouter in the app’s provider settings and choose a model from the session view or command palette.
What you need before connecting
- OpenCode installed or available as a desktop app. Use the official installation instructions for your platform; installation methods differ by operating system.
- An OpenRouter account and API key. Create the key in the OpenRouter dashboard. Treat it as a secret: do not share it or put it in public examples.
- The OpenCode project you want to work in, if using the terminal interface.
OpenRouter’s integration guide describes keys beginning with sk-or-v1-; use the key issued to your account, not that prefix as a substitute for a key.
Connect OpenRouter in the OpenCode terminal interface
- Open a terminal in the project directory and start OpenCode.
- At the OpenCode prompt, run
/connect. - Select OpenRouter from the provider list, then paste your API key when prompted.
- Run
/modelsand select the OpenRouter model you want to use.
OpenCode’s provider guide says credentials added with /connect are stored in ~/.local/share/opencode/auth.json. Keep that file private because it contains authentication data. You can use opencode auth list to check whether OpenCode has a provider credential.
Connect from OpenCode Desktop
- Open the provider settings or use the provider command in OpenCode Desktop.
- Choose OpenRouter, select API-key authentication, enter your key, and confirm.
- Choose a model from the session view or command palette.
The OpenRouter integration guide says the desktop app loads a newly connected provider’s model catalog at startup. If you connect OpenRouter but do not see its models, fully quit OpenCode Desktop and reopen it.

Choose a model that fits the task
In the terminal interface, use /models to browse and select an available model. Desktop users can use the model picker described above. OpenRouter’s catalog is the place to verify current model IDs, availability, and pricing; these can change, so a static model ranking or price list may quickly become outdated.
- Match capability to the task: consider what the work requires, such as coding, reasoning, or speed, and compare the model descriptions in the live catalog.
- Check cost: compare the current pricing shown in the catalog for the models you are considering.
- Consider routing preferences: if you need to control which provider handles a model request, OpenRouter supports routing preferences in configuration. This is optional; it is not needed to make a basic connection.
Use the exact model identifier shown in the catalog. Some OpenRouter aliases include a leading ~; preserve it when the catalog shows it.

When to add model configuration
Start with /models. Add configuration only if the model you need is absent from OpenCode’s list or you need an advanced option such as provider routing. OpenCode’s provider documentation and newer v2 provider documentation use different configuration shapes. Do not combine their fields in one file; follow the page that matches your installed OpenCode version.
Provider-guide configuration
The OpenCode provider guide shows an opencode.json format with a provider.openrouter.models map for adding models by ID. Its routing example sets per-model options.provider.order and allow_fallbacks. The OpenRouter integration guide also illustrates provider configuration and requires exact model slugs, including a leading ~ where used.

Newer v2 provider configuration
The OpenCode v2 provider documentation describes supplying OPENROUTER_API_KEY to the OpenCode server or connecting an account, and selecting a model with its provider prefix and complete model ID. Its example is openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4. This is a different configuration shape from the provider guide’s provider.openrouter.models example. The documented sources do not establish a precise release boundary for the syntax change, so check the documentation matching your installed version rather than assuming the examples are interchangeable.
If you override an endpoint or use an OpenRouter-compatible gateway with the v2 setup, the v2 provider documentation advises keeping OpenRouter’s native runtime so OpenRouter request and reasoning behavior is retained.

The model you want is not listed
- Look up the model in OpenRouter’s live catalog and copy its exact slug.
- Preserve a leading
~if the catalog uses one. - For the provider-guide terminal configuration, add an absent model under
provider.openrouter.models, then restart OpenCode. If you are using the newer v2 configuration, use its full model ID after theopenrouter/prefix instead.
