Start by checking for an updated version from the software publisher. If none is available, run Windows 11’s Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. These steps can resolve some older-app problems, but they cannot overcome every missing runtime, unsupported driver, or architecture limit.
Identify what is failing before changing settings
Write down the program’s name and version, the complete error message, and whether the problem began after a Windows or app update. To check your Windows release and build, open Start, type winver, and press Enter. The cause matters: Windows architecture, security changes, system requirements, and missing dependencies can all affect an app after an upgrade. A compatibility setting is not a substitute for a required runtime or supported driver. Microsoft’s older-app guidance describes these common sources of incompatibility.
Try the safest fixes first
Check for a publisher update
Visit the software publisher’s official website and look for a newer build or Windows compatibility guidance. Use its installer and documentation rather than assuming that an unofficial download is safe or authoritative. An update is the best first step when one is available.
Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Follow the prompts, apply the settings Windows recommends, and test the program again.
The troubleshooter may help with common legacy behavior issues, but it cannot guarantee that every discontinued program will work or supply every dependency it needs.

Update drivers if the app opens but behaves incorrectly
If the program launches but has glitches, Microsoft recommends installing current device drivers through Windows Update and testing again. If an error points to a missing runtime, check the publisher’s documentation or the exact error message to identify the dependency before installing additional components.
Install .NET Framework 3.5 only when the app requires it
Some older programs need .NET Framework 3.5. Confirm that this is the missing dependency rather than installing it as a general compatibility fix. The correct installation method depends on your Windows 11 release: Microsoft says 25H2 and earlier include .NET Framework 3.5 as an optional Windows component, while Windows 11 26H1 (build 28000) and later use a standalone installer. Do not apply older DISM instructions for earlier Windows releases to 26H1 or later; the standalone installer is version-specific. Check your build with winver before following installation steps.
Know when a 16-bit program cannot run natively
Windows 11 is available only as a 64-bit operating system. Some 16-bit applications relied on NTVDM, a compatibility subsystem that is not included in 64-bit Windows. In that case, a compatibility-mode checkbox cannot restore the missing subsystem. Ask the publisher whether a current version or supported alternative exists. Use Edge IE mode only for a compatible trusted legacy site
Internet Explorer is not supported as a standalone browser on Windows 11. Microsoft Edge’s IE mode is intended for compatible legacy web applications, particularly trusted enterprise intranet sites configured by an organization. It is not a safe workaround for browsing arbitrary public websites with obsolete browser technology. For a business app, ask your organization’s administrator whether the site is configured for IE mode; otherwise, the better long-term route is to migrate or update the web application.
