Short answer: Don’t treat OBS Studio’s graphical application as a conventional Windows service. Windows services run in a separate, noninteractive context by default, which is a poor fit for a desktop app that may need a user session and initialized sources. Instead, launch OBS automatically in the intended Windows user session using its documented --startstreaming option, then test sign-in, source availability, YouTube’s broadcast state, and recovery on the actual machine.
Why running OBS as a Windows service is risky
“Service” is sometimes used casually to mean software that starts in the background. In Windows, a service is a specific process model. Microsoft says services are typically designed to run unattended without a graphical user interface, cannot directly interact with users as of Windows Vista, and run in Terminal Services session 0. Microsoft advises against interactive services in new code. See Microsoft Learn’s Interactive Services documentation (last updated January 7, 2021).
OBS Studio is a graphical application. Moving it into a service context can separate it from the interactive desktop and introduce uncertainty about whether its sources, audio devices, and other session-dependent components initialize as expected. The available OBS documentation supports automated launching; it does not establish a generic service-wrapper recipe as a safe or reliable way to run OBS.

Start OBS automatically in the user session
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. Its Windows guidance also says automated launches, including scheduled tasks, need a working directory set to the folder containing obs64.exe. The documented argument and working-directory requirement are not a complete unattended-recovery plan or a prescribed Task Scheduler configuration. See OBS Project: Launch Parameters (May 30, 2021).

- Prepare OBS first. Open OBS in the Windows account and session you intend to use. Select the correct scene and sources, configure the YouTube service and stream key as described below, and confirm the stream works before automating it.
- Use a launch mechanism that runs in that user session. Configure the mechanism appropriate to your Windows setup to launch OBS with
--startstreaming. The exact Task Scheduler settings depend on whether you need launch at sign-in or another event; the OBS documentation does not specify a complete task recipe. - Set the working directory. For automated Windows launches, set “Start in…” to the directory where
obs64.exeis located. Without the required working directory, an automated launch may not behave as expected. - Decide whether streaming should start unattended.
--startstreamingrequests that OBS begin streaming when launched. If a person needs to check sources, confirm the scheduled broadcast, or choose when to go live, launch OBS without that option and start the stream manually. - Test the real startup path. Reboot the target PC and observe whether the intended Windows session starts, OBS opens, sources and audio initialize, and OBS sends output. Separately confirm the viewer-facing YouTube broadcast is correct. Then test the recovery path you plan to use after an OBS, Windows, network, or YouTube interruption.
Configure OBS for YouTube without hard-coding stale settings
Use OBS’s current YouTube service integration and the stream setup shown in YouTube Studio; don’t copy a stream key into a script or publish it in screenshots or logs. A stream key is a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s current stream settings.
OBS’s maintained service configuration lists YouTube – RTMPS, with a primary endpoint of rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2 and a backup endpoint of rtmps://b.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2?backup=1. It lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 as supported codecs, a 2-second keyframe interval, a maximum video bitrate of 51,000 kbps, and a maximum audio bitrate of 160 kbps. These are service configuration values, not a recommendation to stream at the maximum or a guarantee that every encoder and channel supports every combination. Check the current OBS configuration and YouTube guidance for your setup: OBS Project’s maintained services.json.

For ordinary SDR streaming, don’t apply HDR-specific settings. YouTube’s documented RTMPS HDR workflow requires OBS 30.1 or newer for that workflow, compatible HDR input, and suitable hardware HEVC settings; it is not a general OBS version requirement. See YouTube Help: Stream HDR video on YouTube.

A launched OBS process and an active output do not by themselves prove that the intended YouTube broadcast is scheduled correctly, public, or visible to viewers. YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle and controls are separate from OBS’s encoder connection. The OBS forum’s YouTube guide describes this distinction, but it dates to July 26, 2015 and some interface details may be obsolete: OBS forum guide to streaming to YouTube. Use the current YouTube Live Control Room for broadcast status and visibility, rather than relying on old UI instructions.

Plan for failures and unattended operation
Automatic launch is only one part of keeping a stream running. The cited OBS and Microsoft materials do not provide an end-to-end guarantee or current recipe for restarting OBS after every failure, surviving sign-out or power loss, retaining GPU capture in a locked session, or handling YouTube’s rules for very long streams. Treat these as deployment checks, not assumed capabilities.
- Windows session: Verify whether your launch method requires a user to sign in and what happens when the PC locks or the user signs out.
- Sources and audio: Check that capture devices, audio sources, and any media or browser sources initialize after a cold reboot, not just when OBS is already open.
- Network and process recovery: Decide how you will detect a dropped connection or crashed OBS process and what action should follow. Test that recovery path rather than assuming a launch option provides it.
- YouTube state: Monitor both OBS’s connection and the broadcast’s viewer-facing status in YouTube. Sending a feed and making the desired broadcast available to viewers are distinct checks.
- Long-running content: Confirm that the content, rights, and broadcast setup are suitable for the intended duration. A continuously running encoder does not establish that a channel or video complies with YouTube’s current policies.
Copyright and reused-content checks for a 24/7 channel
Before looping recordings, make sure you have the necessary rights to every video, song, image, and other element in the stream. A stream key or permission to broadcast from OBS does not grant content rights. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies, and consider whether a loop adds original value rather than simply replaying material. Use this copyright safety checklist as a planning aid; it is not a substitute for rights clearance or YouTube’s rules.

Common problems and what to check
- OBS does not launch from automation: Confirm that the executable path is correct and that “Start in…” points to the folder containing
obs64.exe, as OBS requires for automated Windows launches. - OBS opens but does not start streaming: Check that the launch argument is exactly
--startstreaming, the intended OBS profile and stream configuration are selected, and the YouTube stream key is valid. Inspect OBS’s own status rather than assuming launch equals connection. - OBS connects but viewers cannot see the expected broadcast: Check the current Live Control Room for the selected broadcast, its status, and its visibility. OBS output alone does not confirm those settings.
- Sources are missing after reboot or sign-in: Reopen OBS in the intended user session and check source permissions, device availability, and whether the source depends on an interactive desktop. A service context may behave differently from a normal desktop session.
- Stream stops after a disconnect or restart: Determine whether OBS remains running, whether it reconnects, and whether the YouTube broadcast is still in the intended state. Test the recovery process on the target machine; no universal recovery behavior is established by the cited launch documentation.
- HDR setup fails or looks wrong: Confirm you are intentionally using YouTube’s HDR workflow and meet its OBS 30.1 minimum for that workflow, compatible HDR input, and hardware HEVC requirements. Do not carry HDR settings into an ordinary SDR setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded recordings, StreamNeo avoids leaving a Windows PC running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, not from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
