This guide refers to the historical Firefox extension and its Selenese HTML tests—not the separate Selenium 2.0 WebDriver framework or the modern Selenium IDE workflow. Selenium’s official documentation classifies the old IDE guide as legacy material, so these steps should not be treated as a supported setup for current Firefox.
What “Selenium IDE” and “Selenium 2.0” mean here
The names describe related but distinct parts of Selenium’s history. The legacy Selenium IDE was a Firefox record-and-playback extension that worked with commands written in Selenese. Selenium 2 was a rewrite of Selenium 1 using WebDriver code. Selenium’s history records that Selenium 3 removed Selenium RC code and Selenium 4 implements the W3C WebDriver specification. See Selenium’s legacy IDE documentation and Selenium’s history.
Because the old IDE guide is preserved as legacy documentation, it does not establish that the extension works with current Firefox. The procedure below explains how the legacy workflow is documented; it is not a recommendation to install an old extension in a modern browser.
Run a test case in the legacy IDE
- Open the legacy Selenium IDE and create a test case or load a saved one. In this format, each Selenese HTML table row represents a command, with columns for the command, target, and value.
- Set the Base URL to the site you intend to test. If a test should work against different domains, use a relative URL in its
opencommand instead of including a fixed domain. - Click Run to play the displayed test case. Observe the command results in the IDE and address any failing step before relying on the test’s outcome.
Run a test suite
A legacy suite is an HTML file whose table rows link to individual test-case files. Load the suite and choose Run All to execute its tests in sequence.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check that each suite link points to the right test-case file.
- Confirm that the case files use the expected
.htmlextension if cases do not load. - Use relative paths where appropriate so suite links resolve from the suite’s location.
Pause, step through, and isolate a failing command
- Pause and resume: Start the test, pause execution, then click Step repeatedly to advance command by command.
- Set a breakpoint: Right-click a command and choose Toggle Breakpoint.
- Choose a start point: Use a command’s context menu to set the test start point.
- Run one command: Double-click the command to execute it by itself.
These controls help determine whether a failure comes from one command or from earlier steps that set up the page or browser state.
Exporting tests and browser scope
The legacy IDE documentation describes exporting a test case to a selected programming language for developing Selenium-RC client programs. It says the old IDE itself runs against Firefox; tests developed there could be used with other browsers through the historical Selenium-RC command-line route. The documentation characterizes TestRunner mode as uncommon and likely to be deprecated, so it is not the normal execution path. These historical notes do not establish compatibility with current browsers.

Legacy IDE versus the modern Selenium IDE workflow
| Area | Legacy Selenium IDE | Modern Selenium IDE workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Test artifact | Selenese commands in HTML test cases; suites are HTML files linking to cases. | A .side project. |
| Execution path | Run the case or suite from the old browser extension. | Documentation describes a command-line runner, selenium-side-runner, invoked with a project path. |
| Browser and compatibility assumptions | The legacy guide describes Firefox. It does not establish current Firefox compatibility. | The separate runner documentation lists Node/npm prerequisites; its version numbers are historical and should not be assumed to be current requirements. |
| Maintenance and new work | Officially preserved as legacy material, rather than presented as the recommended current setup. | A distinct project-and-runner workflow; consult its command-line runner documentation for its own setup. |
Do not treat a Selenese HTML test as a .side project or combine the old extension’s Run/Run All steps with the modern runner’s commands. For current automation work, choose and follow one workflow’s own documentation.
Troubleshooting legacy test runs
- The suite opens but a case does not: Check the suite’s linked file path and verify the case filename and
.htmlextension. - The test targets the wrong site: Review the Base URL and the test’s
opencommand. Prefer a relative URL when reusing the same test across domains. - A command fails midway: Pause, step through the test, or set a breakpoint before the suspect command. Confirm that earlier commands established the expected page state.
- You cannot install or run the old extension in a current browser: The legacy documentation does not promise compatibility with current Firefox. Use a currently documented Selenium workflow rather than assuming an old extension can be made compatible.
- You are trying to run an HTML case with the modern runner: The modern command-line documentation describes a separate
.sideproject workflow; these formats and instructions are not interchangeable.

If your goal is to capture a web page rather than run an interactive Selenium test, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
