You can run a distilled DeepSeek-R1 model locally on many personal computers, but the right size depends on available memory, acceptable response speed, and how much context you need. Start with an explicit Ollama model tag such as deepseek-r1:7b; the full 671B-parameter DeepSeek-R1 is a very different workload that calls for high-end multi-GPU server hardware.
Choose the right DeepSeek model for your computer
“DeepSeek-R1” refers to a family of models, not one download. DeepSeek’s repository describes the full R1 checkpoint as 671 billion total parameters, with 37 billion activated parameters, and lists dense distilled versions at 1.5B, 7B, 8B, 14B, 32B, and 70B. The distilled models are the practical starting point for local use. The activated-parameter figure does not mean that only 37B of the full model’s weights need to be available in memory.
Ollama lists the following DeepSeek-R1 tags and model artifact sizes. These are download sizes, not RAM or VRAM requirements.

Ollama also lists a 1.3TB FP16 full-model tag. If you plan to keep multiple models, allow storage for their artifacts as well as your operating system and runtime. The cited sources do not establish a required drive type or minimum drive speed.

What hardware do you need?
Memory and graphics
Do not treat a model’s file size as its memory requirement. Serving a model also involves runtime memory, and the amount varies with weight format, context length, inference engine, and configuration. GPU memory can affect how much work runs on the GPU, while CPU execution or offload may be possible but can change response speed. The available official guidance does not provide a complete minimum system-RAM and VRAM table for every consumer computer, so there is no universal GPU recommendation for each tag.
A practical way to choose is to start with the smallest distilled tag that serves your needs, then test a larger one only if its speed and memory use are acceptable. A larger tag is not automatically better for every task; compare results on the work you actually want it to do.

Full-model hardware is a separate category
For the full 671B model, the vLLM FP8 deployment recipe lists 805GB minimum VRAM and recommends eight H200 GPUs. It also describes an FP4 NVIDIA configuration using four B200 GPUs. These are specific server-scale serving recipes, not consumer-PC specifications. DeepSeek’s repository directs readers seeking to run the full R1 models locally to its DeepSeek-V3 repository.
Context length and usable memory
DeepSeek’s repository lists a 128K context length for the full R1 model. Ollama advertises a 128K context window for its smaller tags and 160K for the 671B tag. An advertised context window is a capacity figure, not a guarantee that every computer can use the entire window at a useful speed: runtime configuration, concurrency, and available memory matter, and the cited sources do not quantify achievable context for every machine.

Run a distilled model with Ollama
- Install Ollama. Use the installation instructions for your operating system from Ollama.
- Open a terminal. Run an explicit tag, for example
ollama run deepseek-r1:7b. You can substitutedeepseek-r1:1.5b,deepseek-r1:14b, or another listed size. - Wait for the model download, then chat. Ollama downloads the selected artifact and starts an interactive session. The unqualified command
ollama run deepseek-r1uses the library’s current default, which is the 8B tag; specifying a size makes the choice reproducible. - Scale up only after a trial. If the model responds at an acceptable speed and leaves adequate memory for your other work, try a larger tag. If it is too slow or strains available memory, move down in size.
Ollama also documents a local HTTP chat API, useful when you want to connect the running model to another application rather than use the terminal. Consult its current library documentation for the API details and available tags.
Use vLLM or SGLang for a serving setup
If you want a configurable inference server rather than a simple local chat, DeepSeek says its distilled models can be used like Qwen or Llama models. Its repository includes a vLLM example for deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-32B with tensor parallelism set to two and a 32K maximum model length, and it names SGLang as another option. Those are example settings, not a general two-GPU minimum for every distilled model. Follow the selected runtime’s current installation instructions because package requirements and command-line flags can change.

For the full model, use the full-model deployment guidance rather than extrapolating from the smaller distilled examples. The vLLM figures above describe a large-scale serving recipe.
