Run Cypress against a chosen browser with npx cypress run --browser chrome or npx cypress run --browser firefox. The browser must be installed in the environment running Cypress. Cypress supports Chrome-family browsers and Firefox; WebKit support is experimental, so treat it as additional engine testing rather than a guarantee of identical behavior in native Safari.

Choose a browser and run the suite

From your project directory, use Cypress’s run command with the browser name:

  • npx cypress run --browser chrome
  • npx cypress run --browser firefox
  • npx cypress run --browser edge

These commands run the project’s configured tests in the selected browser. cypress run is headless by default. Add --headed to display the browser window while tests execute, which is useful when investigating failures that occur only in headless mode.

The browser must be installed where Cypress runs. Cypress detects supported installed browsers; if it does not detect a browser, its browser-launch documentation describes selecting it by binary path. In Cypress open mode, choose an available browser in the UI; in run mode, specify it with --browser.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Make browser runs repeatable

Use npm scripts for local shortcuts

Add scripts to package.json if you run the same browser commands frequently:

{
  "scripts": {
    "cy:run:chrome": "cypress run --browser chrome",
    "cy:run:firefox": "cypress run --browser firefox"
  }
}

Then run npm run cy:run:chrome or npm run cy:run:firefox. These shortcuts do not install browsers; make sure the selected browser is present on each developer machine and CI worker.

Provision browsers in CI

Run the same suite in separate CI jobs or invocations, one per browser. Cypress documents provisioning browsers with its Docker images. A simple CI plan is to run the primary browser on every change, then add other browser jobs according to the confidence they provide and the time and infrastructure they consume.

You do not have to run every spec in every browser on every commit. Cypress’s cross-browser guide describes strategies such as running all tests in one browser and a critical-path subset in another, or scheduling broader coverage at a chosen branch or release point. Cypress Cloud recording and grouping are optional ways to organize browser jobs, not prerequisites. See Cypress Cross Browser Testing for its CI examples.

Choose versions deliberately

Cypress’s current browser-launch guide says it officially supports the latest three major versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. The same guide currently documents Firefox 140 as the launch floor; Cypress 15.0.0 through 15.18.1 had a floor of Firefox 135. These version details can change with Cypress releases, so check the launch guide for the version in your project and provision the browser version you intend to test.

For non-stable browser channels, the Cypress CLI reference allows a colon suffix after the browser name. Verify the channel spelling and availability in the documentation for your installed Cypress version rather than assuming every channel is present on every operating system.

Decide how much coverage each browser needs

Choose coverage based on the browsers your users rely on and the engine differences that matter to your application, then balance the added confidence against CI duration and infrastructure cost. Keep browser and version selection consistent enough that a failure can be reproduced locally or in a controlled CI environment.

  • Every-change coverage: run the full suite in the browser that provides your main baseline, plus a smaller critical-path set in another browser if that catches important differences.
  • Broader scheduled coverage: run more specs or additional browser jobs at a release point or on a selected branch when the extra runtime is acceptable.
  • Reproducibility: provision known browser versions in CI and use the same versions when reproducing failures locally where practical.
  • Engine maturity: use supported Chrome-family browsers and Firefox for routine cross-browser checks; evaluate WebKit separately because Cypress labels its support experimental.

Include or exclude browser-specific tests

Most tests should remain shared across browsers. When a test genuinely depends on browser-specific behavior, Cypress supports the browser test configuration at the test or suite level. Its matchers follow the arguments accepted by Cypress.isBrowser(). For example, a Chrome-only clipboard test can be configured like this:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
it('uses the Chrome clipboard API', { browser: 'chrome' }, () => {
  // Test behavior specific to Chrome
})

A Firefox-specific case can use { browser: 'firefox' }; a case that should not run in Chrome can use { browser: '!chrome' }. Apply these filters narrowly: excluding a test from a browser should reflect a real incompatibility or browser-only behavior, not conceal a shared regression. See Writing and organizing tests for the documented configuration approach.

Know the browser support limits

Chrome, Chromium, Edge, and Firefox

The launching guide lists Chrome, Chrome for Testing, Chromium, Edge, Firefox variants, and experimental WebKit. Cypress’s documented official support statement covers the latest three major versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Edge; do not interpret it as an indefinite promise for every older browser build or channel.

WebKit is experimental

Cypress describes WebKit as experimental. Its documented setup requires enabling experimentalWebKitSupport, installing playwright-webkit, and installing additional Linux dependencies when applicable. The guide lists known limitations, including lack of cy.origin() support. A WebKit run exercises Safari’s browser engine, but it should not be presented as proof that native Safari behaves identically.

Electron is deprecated

Electron is deprecated as a Cypress test browser, and the documentation says it will be removed in a future Cypress version. Specify a browser explicitly in scripts and CI instead of relying on a bundled default.

Network interception can differ by browser

If your tests depend on network interception, check the configuration reference for your installed Cypress version. As of Cypress 16, Chrome, Chromium, and Edge use native browser network interception, while Firefox and WebKit retain the legacy network path. This distinction matters only when it intersects with the behavior your suite tests.

Troubleshoot browser runs

  • “Browser not found” or launch failure: install or provision the browser in the same machine or container as Cypress. If Cypress cannot auto-detect it, provide the browser binary path using the documented launch option.
  • A browser name works locally but not in CI: the CI image may not contain that browser or channel. Use a Cypress Docker image that provisions browsers, or configure the browser installation in the CI environment before the test command runs.
  • Firefox will not launch: check the Firefox version against the launch floor documented for your Cypress release. The floor has changed across releases.
  • WebKit setup or tests fail: confirm experimental support is enabled, playwright-webkit is installed, and required Linux dependencies are present. Check known limitations such as unsupported cy.origin() before treating the failure as an application defect.
  • A test fails only headlessly: rerun with --headed to inspect the browser and determine whether the issue is tied to headless execution or test timing.
  • Different results across browsers: first verify the browser and Cypress versions, then inspect browser-specific APIs, network interception behavior, and any tests conditionally included or excluded through browser configuration.

Or skip the browser setup

For website screenshots rather than Cypress test execution, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request captures a URL as an image or PDF; this does not replace running Cypress tests across browsers. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
