Use Run as administrator, approve the User Account Control (UAC) prompt, and check that the window title says Administrator: Command Prompt before entering an elevated command.
Run Command Prompt as administrator from taskbar Search
- Select Search on the Windows 11 taskbar.
- Type command prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt in the results.
- Select Run as administrator.
- When User Account Control asks whether you want to allow the app to make changes, select Yes.
The elevated window should have the title Administrator: Command Prompt. If the title does not include Administrator, close the window and repeat the steps using Run as administrator.
Use Start-menu Search instead
- Right-click Start, then select Search.
- In the Type here to search box, enter cmd.
- Under Command Prompt, select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the UAC prompt. If Windows requests credentials instead, enter the username and password for an account with administrator privileges, then select Yes.
A standard user cannot complete elevation without administrator credentials. If you do not have those credentials, you will need an administrator to approve the request or perform the task.

What to run after elevation
Once the title shows Administrator: Command Prompt, enter the command required for the task and press Enter. Copy the spacing and punctuation exactly.

Command Prompt may open inside Windows Terminal
On Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, following the October 2022 update, Windows Terminal is the default app used to host console windows. As a result, an elevated Command Prompt may appear as a Command Prompt tab in Windows Terminal rather than as a separate, old-style console window. This is normal and does not by itself mean that elevation failed.
Check the title of the Command Prompt tab or window for the administrator indication. The hosting app is separate from the permissions assigned to Command Prompt.

Change the default console host in Settings
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Go to System > Advanced.
- Under Terminal, select Windows Console Host.
Change it in Windows Terminal
- Open Windows Terminal.
- Select the Startup tab.
- Open Default terminal application.
- Select Windows Console Host.
If a command-line app is already open in Windows Console Host, right-click its title bar, select Properties, and then select Windows Console Host.
Changing the host can help with applications that have graphical and text-mode elements and do not behave correctly inside Windows Terminal. For ordinary Command Prompt commands, either host can generally display the console.
Troubleshoot administrator Command Prompt problems
“Run as administrator” is missing
The signed-in account may not have administrator privileges, or the search result may not be the Command Prompt app. Search specifically for cmd or command prompt, select the result labeled Command Prompt, and look for Run as administrator. If Windows requests credentials, an administrator must provide the username and password.

The command returns an access or permission error
Close the ordinary console and reopen Command Prompt using Run as administrator. Confirm that the title is Administrator: Command Prompt. A normal Command Prompt window cannot perform every operation simply because the command itself is typed correctly.
DISM fails to complete
Check the command carefully, including its spaces: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth.
Do not remove the spaces before the switches. The operation can take several minutes, so avoid closing the window while it is working.

SFC says it cannot perform the requested operation
For the specific result that sfc /scannow cannot perform the requested operation, Microsoft identifies Safe Mode as a resolution path. Start Windows in Safe Mode and run the scan again from an elevated Command Prompt.
Command Prompt opens in the wrong-looking window
If it opens in a Windows Terminal tab, that is expected on many current Windows 11 installations. Use the administrator title or label to verify elevation, not whether the console appears as a separate window. If a particular older application has graphical or text-mode compatibility problems in Terminal, switch the default console host to Windows Console Host.
Administrator Command Prompt versus ordinary Command Prompt

FAQ
How do I know Command Prompt is running as administrator?
Look at the window title. Microsoft’s documented indicator is Administrator: Command Prompt. If “Administrator” is missing, close the console and reopen it through Run as administrator.

Does typing cmd automatically open an administrator Command Prompt?
No. Typing cmd finds or launches Command Prompt, but it does not elevate it. You must select Run as administrator and approve UAC or provide administrator credentials.
Why does administrator Command Prompt open in Windows Terminal?
Windows Terminal is the default console host on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later in many installations. Command Prompt can therefore open as a Terminal tab while still running with administrator permissions.
Can a standard Windows user run Command Prompt as administrator?
Only with administrator approval or valid credentials for an administrator account. A standard user cannot complete elevation independently.
What should I do if UAC asks for a password?
Enter the username and password of an account with administrator privileges, then select Yes. Without those credentials, the Command Prompt remains unelevated.
