You can try ChromeOS Flex on a Windows PC or Mac by booting the computer from a USB installer. Check the exact model against Google’s certified-model list first, then use live boot to test the hardware without replacing Windows or macOS. Installing ChromeOS Flex permanently is different: it erases the computer’s existing operating system, apps, settings, and data.

Check whether your exact PC or Mac is supported

ChromeOS Flex compatibility is model-specific. A computer is not guaranteed to work just because it is from a supported brand, is relatively new, or resembles a listed model. Find the exact model name and number in the computer’s system information or on its product label, then search for it in Google’s certified-model list. Review the model’s current status, certification end date, and feature notes before proceeding.

Google’s directory was last updated September 2, 2026, when checked for this guide; the entries and support status can change. Once a model’s certification period ends, it leaves the list and is no longer part of ongoing testing or eligible for Google support. It might continue receiving updates, but Google does not guarantee that. Google also says most newer Mac models are not supported in its guidance for installing on non-certified devices. Do not treat another Mac model’s listing or behavior as evidence that yours will work.

Minimum requirements

  • An Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible processor.
  • At least 4 GB of RAM.
  • At least 16 GB of internal storage.
  • The ability to boot from USB.

Google does not recommend or support devices with Intel or AMD components from 2012 or earlier, or Nvidia graphics components from 2014 or earlier; those systems are unlikely to work. You may also need access to BIOS or UEFI administrator settings to change boot options.

Choose between live boot and full installation

Option What happens Main trade-off
Live boot from USB ChromeOS Flex runs temporarily from the installer. The existing operating system and data remain in place. Useful for trying the system, but performance and storage are limited; automatic updates and managed enrollment are unavailable, and some hardware or connectivity may not work as expected.
Full installation ChromeOS Flex replaces the existing operating system on the computer. Google recommends installation for normal use, but it permanently erases the target computer’s current operating system, apps, settings, and data.

Live-boot downloads and settings do not carry over to an installation. Use live boot to check the features you rely on before deciding whether to replace your current system.

Create a ChromeOS Flex USB installer

You can create the installer on a different computer from the one you plan to use. It requires a USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity, and creating the installer erases everything on that drive. Copy any files you want to keep somewhere else first. Google notes that some USB drives, including some SanDisk drives, may not work; if creation or booting fails, try another drive.

  1. Choose a creation method. Google recommends Chromebook Recovery Utility on ChromeOS, Windows, or Mac with Chrome installed. Alternatively, use Google’s download method from ChromeOS, Windows, Mac, or Linux without Chrome.
  2. Follow the chosen method’s instructions. Select ChromeOS Flex as the operating system and create the installer on the USB drive. Wait for the process to finish before removing it.
  3. Keep the installer available. You will use it to start the target computer and, if you choose, install ChromeOS Flex.

Boot the computer from USB and test ChromeOS Flex

  1. Read the model notes. Check the certified-model list for known limitations and supported boot guidance.
  2. Shut the computer down fully. Do not leave it asleep or idle. Insert the installer USB drive.
  3. Open the one-time boot menu. Turn on the computer and immediately press its boot-menu key repeatedly. The key varies by model; consult the computer maker’s instructions rather than relying on a universal key.
  4. Select the USB drive. If it is not shown, check the model-specific BIOS or UEFI settings and confirm that USB boot is enabled.
  5. Choose the live-boot option when ChromeOS Flex starts. Use the temporary session to check whether the computer’s important hardware works.

Test the features you actually need: Wi-Fi or Ethernet, sound, display, keyboard, touchpad, webcam, sleep and resume, Bluetooth, and any touchscreen or specialist hardware. Google’s certification guidance distinguishes guaranteed, not-guaranteed, and unsupported features. Bluetooth, touchscreens, SD card readers, and some function keys are among the features that may not be guaranteed on every model, so check the individual model notes.

Install ChromeOS Flex only if you are ready to erase the computer

A full installation is not a dual-boot setup and does not preserve Windows or macOS. Google warns that the target computer’s data is permanently unrecoverable after erasure. Back up files to cloud storage or another drive first, then disconnect backup and other storage drives before installing so you do not erase the wrong device.

Understand how Flex differs from Chromebook ChromeOS

ChromeOS Flex shares technology and management tools with ChromeOS, but it runs on third-party hardware and does not have the Google security chip used by ChromeOS devices. As a result, ChromeOS verified boot is unavailable. Google says Secure Boot may be supported through UEFI and recommends enabling it when available, but it does not provide the same guarantees as ChromeOS verified boot.

Flex automatically encrypts user data, but hardware-backed protection depends on the computer’s TPM support. Without a supported TPM, data remains encrypted but may be more vulnerable to attack. Check the model listing rather than assuming the computer has the same hardware security profile as a Chromebook.

Troubleshoot USB boot and startup problems

The computer does not start from the installer

  • Confirm the USB port works, then try another port.
  • Try another USB drive; some drives may fail as installer media.
  • Confirm that USB boot is enabled in the computer’s BIOS or UEFI settings.
  • Use the boot-menu instructions for the exact model. On Macs, check current model guidance: most newer models are not supported in Google’s non-certified-device guidance, and some devices can have long boot delays.

Installation finishes, but the computer shows a black screen or “no OS found”

Google directs users with these symptoms to its BIOS and UEFI boot configuration guidance. The relevant settings vary by computer maker and model, so follow instructions for the exact device.
