Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInstall @applitools/eyes-playwright, configure an Applitools API key, import the Eyes Playwright fixture, and add a named eyes.check() call at the UI state you want to protect. Eyes compares that checkpoint with a saved baseline; you review differences and accept only changes that are intentional.
Install and initialize the Playwright integration
Applitools’ March 11, 2026 setup guide documents this package and CLI flow. The setup command configures imports and settings and adds a demo test. Package versions and CLI behavior can change, so consult the current integration documentation if the commands do not match your installed version.
- Install the SDK from your project directory:
npm install @applitools/eyes-playwright - Run its setup flow:
npx eyes-playwright setup - Set your Eyes API key as the
APPLITOOLS_API_KEYenvironment variable. Obtain the key through your Applitools account; do not hardcode it in a configuration file that may be committed. The dashboard documentation describes the execution key as execute-only. See Applitools API key documentation.
The setup and fixture-oriented workflow are described in Applitools’ March 11, 2026 SDK announcement. The official Playwright integration documentation provides the fixture example below.
Write a visual checkpoint test
Import test from @applitools/eyes-playwright/fixture rather than from Playwright’s usual test module for tests that use Eyes. The fixture supplies both Playwright’s page and an eyes object. Keep navigation and user interactions in Playwright; add a named Eyes checkpoint after the page reaches the state that matters.

import { test } from '@applitools/eyes-playwright/fixture';
test('Homepage visual check', async ({ page, eyes }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await eyes.check('Homepage', {
fully: true,
matchLevel: 'Strict',
});
});
The fixture handles Eyes test lifecycle work such as opening and closing tests. The example captures the full page with fully: true. A checkpoint name such as Homepage should identify the user-visible state, not just the test implementation.
Choose the checkpoint scope and comparison behavior
Choose the capture scope to match the regression question. A full-page checkpoint covers the rendered page; a focused region isolates a component whose appearance should be evaluated separately.
| Choice | Use it for | Implementation |
|---|---|---|
| Full page | Checking the whole rendered page state | Set fully: true in the eyes.check() options. |
| Targeted region | Separating a component’s visual behavior from the rest of the page | Pass the target locator using the region option. |
Applitools documents these comparison and region options in its Playwright integration guide.

Match level
matchLevel determines how Eyes compares a checkpoint image with its baseline. The integration guide recommends Strict. Choose a comparison level according to the differences your test is intended to catch; do not assume a less strict setting will preserve every regression signal.
Ignore and floating regions
Use ignoreRegions for known areas whose expected variation is not part of the test’s signal. Use floatingRegions when an element or container may move within a bounded area. The guide also lists IgnoreDisplacements for suppressing differences caused by elements shifting position. These controls can hide meaningful changes if applied too broadly, so investigate a diff before masking it.
Keep checkpoints maintainable
Place checks near the Playwright actions that create the state being captured. For a larger suite, Applitools recommends organizing checks in page-object methods or custom fixtures. Descriptive names such as Product details loaded make results easier to identify than generic names such as Check 2.

Configure reporting and failure behavior
To include Eyes visual-test information in Playwright’s enhanced HTML report, configure @applitools/eyes-playwright/reporter as the Playwright reporter. Open the generated report with:
npx playwright show-report
The report supports reviewing visual differences. The integration guide documents global eyesConfig settings including appName, batch, and failTestsOnDiff. The latter accepts 'afterEach', 'afterAll', or false. Select the failure timing that fits your CI and triage process; disabling automatic failure is a workflow choice, not a resolution of the underlying difference. See the integration guide for the current configuration shape.

Review visual differences and update baselines deliberately
When a checkpoint differs, compare the current capture with its baseline before deciding what to do. A baseline is the reference used for future comparisons; accepting a change updates that reference.

- Open the Playwright/Eyes report or the relevant batch results.
- Inspect the highlighted differences against the baseline and the intended UI behavior.
- Accept the change only if the UI change is intentional. Reject an unintended difference and investigate the application or test.
- Re-run the test after code or baseline changes as appropriate for your project.
Applitools documents side-by-side comparison and accept/reject review in its integration guide and dashboard documentation.
Understand the run flow
The test suite exercises your application, the Eyes SDK captures screenshots at checkpoints and sends them to Eyes Server, and the service compares them with stored baselines. Testers review results in Eyes Test Manager, update baselines when appropriate, or mark bugs and annotate regions. Applitools lists public cloud, dedicated cloud, and on-premises Eyes server configurations; consult the vendor’s system overview for the available configurations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Migrate an existing Eyes Playwright project
Applitools’ March 11, 2026 SDK announcement describes the fixture-based onboarding and says backward compatibility is maintained. It recommends trying a few tests in both SDK patterns, migrating simpler tests first, then moving critical tests gradually. That guidance does not guarantee every existing project configuration will work unchanged; validate your own suite and CI behavior as you migrate.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- Fixture import cannot be resolved: confirm
@applitools/eyes-playwrightis installed in the project where the test runs, then check that the installed SDK version supports the documented/fixtureimport. Consult the current integration documentation if the API differs. - The setup command or options do not match: package and CLI versions are volatile. Check the current package documentation and the SDK announcement’s setup instructions rather than assuming an older command applies.
- Eyes cannot connect to the account: verify that
APPLITOOLS_API_KEYis set in the environment used by the local test process or CI job, and that the value comes from your Applitools account. Keep the key out of source control; see the API key guide. - A checkpoint fails the test: open the visual result and determine whether it is an intended UI change or a regression before accepting a new baseline. If the state is unstable, identify the varying content and decide whether a narrowly scoped region rule is appropriate.
- The HTML report lacks Eyes details: verify that the Playwright configuration uses
@applitools/eyes-playwright/reporteras documented, then generate or open the report withnpx playwright show-report.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot file from a URL rather than visual-regression baselines inside a Playwright test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. This is an alternative for capture, not a replacement for Eyes’ baseline comparison workflow.
Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free: 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Eyes checkpoint replace Playwright navigation or interaction code?
No. Use Playwright for navigation and interactions, then call Eyes at the visual state you want to compare.
Can I use Eyes without changing every Playwright test?
Add the Eyes fixture and checkpoints to the tests that need visual comparisons; the vendor’s migration guidance recommends gradual adoption for existing projects.
