You can run Android games on a Steam Deck through Waydroid, an independently maintained Android container project for SteamOS. It is not a Valve feature, and installing Waydroid does not guarantee a particular game will work: compatibility depends on a matching SteamOS bundle, the app’s processor architecture, game services, input, and performance on your Deck.
Can you play Android games on Steam Deck?
Yes, using Waydroid, which runs Android in a container on Linux. For Steam Deck-specific installation, the documented route is the community-maintained SteamOS Waydroid Bundle. It is not provided or endorsed by Valve, so follow the current project instructions and check that a compatible bundle exists for your SteamOS build before installing.
Steam Deck Verified, Playable, and Unsupported labels concern Steam games in Valve’s compatibility program. They do not indicate whether an Android game will run in Waydroid. See Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility information.
Check requirements and SteamOS compatibility first
The Deck-specific bundle project says its installer needs a matching bundle for the SteamOS version. It prefers an exact version, build, and ABI match; some cross-build combinations may work when ABI and Binder conditions match. If the setup uses an external Binder module, the kernel release recorded for that module must match the running kernel. Because SteamOS updates can change these details, check the project’s compatibility information again after an update.

For a new installation, the project lists these prerequisites:
- Steam Deck Desktop Mode with a working graphical session.
- A sudo password for the
deckuser. - Internet access.
- At least 10 GB free under the home filesystem.
- A compatible bundle for the SteamOS version and branch in use.
The project lists Stable, Beta, and Preview support only when a compatible bundle is available. Development and main builds are experimental. Availability can change, so do not assume a bundle for one SteamOS release will work with another.

Install Waydroid on Steam Deck
- Check your SteamOS build and branch. In Desktop Mode, identify the SteamOS version you are running and compare it with the bundle project’s current compatibility information and releases.
- Confirm prerequisites. Make sure you have the required free home-filesystem space, internet access, a working desktop session, and the
deckuser’s sudo password. - Follow the bundle project’s current installation instructions. Use the published bundle that matches your environment; do not substitute an arbitrary bundle if a compatible one is unavailable.
- Choose an Android image. The project’s normal installation choices are Android 13 images, with or without Google Play, and Android TV 13 variants. Android 16 is offered in a separate experimental test environment.
- Start Waydroid and install a game. If you are installing an APK, Waydroid documents the command
waydroid app install xyz.apk; replacexyz.apkwith the APK filename. - Test the game on your own Deck. Check that it launches, signs in, displays correctly, accepts your controls, and remains stable during play.
The project describes itself as an independently maintained, modified continuation of an earlier installer and says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by the original project. Its setup guidance is community-project guidance, not Valve support.
Which Android image should you choose?
For a regular setup, the project lists Android 13 as its ordinary path. It also lists Android TV 13 variants, which are separate image options rather than evidence that a particular game will work well with a controller or television-style interface.

Android 16 images are experimental. The project reports different Waydroid lifecycle behavior in two specific configurations: Waydroid 1.6.3 on SteamOS Beta 3.8.25 and Waydroid 1.5.4 on SteamOS Stable 3.8.16. Those reports describe the stated configurations; they are not a general performance comparison or a guarantee for other builds.
Why an Android APK may not run
Architecture mismatch
A Steam Deck runs an x86_64 environment, while some Android APKs found online support only ARM. Waydroid’s documentation warns: “The apk files you will sometimes find on the internet tend to only have arm support, and will therefore not work on x86_64.” A container that starts successfully does not make every APK compatible. Do not assume ARM translation will solve the problem for every game.

Google Play certification and game services
A GAPPS image may initially report that the device is uncertified. Waydroid documents a self-certification procedure for this situation: Google Play certification help. Certification alone does not establish that a game will appear in the Play Store, install, sign in, or accept the runtime.
App and account restrictions
Some games rely on account checks or services that may not accept the container environment. A successful installation is not proof that sign-in, multiplayer, purchases, or other game services will work. Check those functions in the particular game rather than assuming general Android compatibility applies.

Input behavior
Waydroid offers a persist.waydroid.fake_touch property for selected package names when an app handles mouse interaction differently from touch. This is a configuration option, not a universal controller mapping or a guarantee that Steam Deck controls will suit a game. Test its actual menus and gameplay input.
How to assess performance and controls
There are no established, controlled frame-rate, battery-life, or thermal measurements here for named Android games across Steam Deck LCD and OLED models and current SteamOS builds. A useful performance claim needs to identify the game version, Deck model, SteamOS build, Waydroid version and image, resolution and settings, and observed results. Without those details, avoid treating a game as known to run well or quoting a specific frame rate.
Use this checklist for each game:
- Launch and stability: Does it open reliably, and does it remain stable during a sustained session?
- Controls: Can you use the game’s menus and core actions with touch, the Deck’s physical controls, or a workable combination?
- Account and services: Can you sign in and reach the online features you need?
- Graphics and responsiveness: Are display output and play responsive enough on your resolution and settings?
- Maintenance: Does the setup still work after a SteamOS update?
Compare the Android app with a Steam version or another way to play using the same criteria: architecture support, account and game-service acceptance, input, stability and graphics on your configuration, and maintenance after updates. The available information does not establish one option as universally better.
What to do after a SteamOS update
SteamOS updates can affect the installation. The bundle project provides an automatic repair path and says it stops if no compatible bundle is available. Another community setup documents that SteamOS updates replace the root filesystem and may remove packages it installed. Check the chosen installer’s current recovery instructions after an update, and back up the Android image and relevant user data if you need to preserve them.
