Yes—Aleph Alpha Kolibri can be served locally, but its published hardware configurations call for datacenter-class accelerators, not a typical laptop or gaming PC. Choose between the FP8 and BF16 model variants, provision enough memory for the full model weights, then install Aleph Alpha’s inference package and launch the model with vLLM.
What you need to know about Kolibri
Kolibri is an English-German mixture-of-experts model released by Aleph Alpha on October 3, 2026. The Kolibri-1 model card lists 78 billion total parameters and 3.46 billion active parameters per token. That active-parameter count does not mean the model fits in memory like a 3.46B-parameter model: the full expert weights must be held in memory while serving.
The available model cards describe two variants: Kolibri-1 (FP8) and Kolibri-1-BF16. Their weight footprints and published accelerator configurations differ substantially.
Choose a variant and check its published hardware requirements
The figures below are the configurations published in Aleph Alpha’s model cards. They describe accelerator configurations, not a complete workstation build or a guarantee of a particular speed.

These are weight-footprint estimates and named accelerator configurations; they do not account for every runtime memory need. Context length and workload affect deployment requirements. The reviewed official materials do not specify a compatible chassis, power supply, host RAM, disk capacity, networking or interconnect, throughput, or current hardware cost. Do not treat the listed minimum as a complete shopping list, or assume an ordinary consumer GPU or laptop meets it.
Install Aleph Alpha’s inference package
Aleph Alpha says Kolibri requires the aleph-alpha-inference package, which supplies its Kolibri vLLM plugin and installs the supported vLLM version. The vendor also provides the container image ghcr.io/aleph-alpha/aleph-alpha-inference. Its package installation command is:

For BF16, use the BF16 model name and the corresponding parser options shown on its model card. Consult that live card for its current complete command rather than assuming the FP8 command’s cache-dtype setting is interchangeable:

The Kolibri-1 model card lists a maximum validated context of 1,048,576 tokens, but recommends serving at no more than 262,144 tokens for efficiency and complex tasks. A million-token context is therefore a supported upper bound, not the default target for every deployment.

For contexts above 262,144, Aleph Alpha’s launch article says to add these arguments:
--max-model-len 1048576 --hf-overrides '{"max_position_embeddings": 1048576}'The model card’s recommended sampling parameters are temperature 1.0, top_p 0.97, and top_k 128. Context size and sampling are separate choices: the former sets how much input the server can accommodate, while the latter controls generation behavior.

Send requests through the OpenAI-compatible API
The model card documents an OpenAI-compatible endpoint at http://localhost:8000/v1. Its Python example uses the OpenAI client and passes reasoning_effort and enable_thinking through chat_template_kwargs. The documented reasoning-effort choices are low, medium, and high; thinking can also be disabled. Use the model card’s current example for the exact request format.
Match deployment to the intended workload
Aleph Alpha describes Kolibri for German- and English-language tasks including multi-step reasoning, coding, structured extraction, retrieval-augmented generation, long-document processing, and agentic tool calling. Its model card positions it for human-reviewed assistants, drafting and document systems, organizational question answering, and internal knowledge or research tools.
For tool-using systems, validate tool results rather than treating them as authoritative. Aleph Alpha positions Kolibri as advisory in decision-support workflows. The official sources reviewed do not establish comparative speed or output-quality results for FP8 versus BF16, so choose based on the supported memory configuration, target context, and your deployment’s latency and throughput needs—not an assumed performance advantage.
What the published setup does not tell you
The official model cards provide named accelerator configurations and weight footprints, but not measured local inference speeds or a complete bill of materials. They also do not establish a cost-effective consumer-PC configuration. Plan the full deployment—including runtime memory and the surrounding server infrastructure—against your specific workload, and verify current compatibility and hardware availability before committing.
