To run AI models on an AMD GPU with ROCm, first confirm that your exact GPU, operating system, driver, ROCm release, framework and Python version are a supported combination. Then install the matching ROCm and framework packages, verify that PyTorch sees the GPU, and follow the chosen model or inference engine’s own AMD instructions. A working ROCm installation alone does not guarantee that every model, kernel or application will run.
Check whether your AMD GPU and software stack are supported
Start with AMD’s ROCm compatibility matrix. The ROCm 10.0.0 matrix, dated August 25, 2026 and covering Linux and Windows, lists supported configurations across hardware, operating systems, drivers and AI software. Check the row and release path for your complete setup—not just whether your GPU appears somewhere in the documentation. AMD lists the Radeon RX 9070 XT, for example, but that does not establish support for every OS, framework or workload on that card.
Record these details before choosing an installer:
- Your full GPU or APU model.
- Your operating system and version, and whether you intend to use Linux or Windows.
- The AI framework and its version, plus the required Python version.
- The model application or inference engine you plan to run.
AMD’s matrix includes PyTorch, JAX, vLLM, SGLang, TensorFlow, MIGraphX and ONNX Runtime, with version and Python compatibility details. Those entries are specific version pairings, not a promise that every listed framework works on every listed device and OS. Check the matrix for your chosen combination before installing.
Unsupported GPUs are not equivalent to supported ones
AMD’s Linux system-requirements documentation says: “If your GPU is not listed on this table, it’s not officially supported by AMD.” AMD also cautions that HIP may run on an unsupported GPU while prebuilt ROCm libraries remain unsupported and can cause runtime errors. Experimental or community workarounds should not be treated as a supported configuration.

Choose one ROCm documentation path
Do not mix instructions and package versions from different release guides. The ROCm 10.0.0 compatibility matrix is one path; AMD’s separate Radeon and Ryzen guide currently documents through ROCm 7.2.1 and has its own platform-specific support information. Use the installer and instructions for the path that matches your exact device, OS and framework.

Windows has narrower support
AMD’s Radeon/Ryzen documentation describes supported Windows 11 configurations for PyTorch, but says the entire ROCm stack is not yet supported on Windows. Treat Windows support as specific to the documented device and framework combination, rather than assuming Linux and Windows offer the same ROCm capabilities.

Install ROCm and the framework for the selected configuration
AMD documents several installation methods, including package-manager installation on Linux, amdgpu-install for Radeon and Ryzen on Linux, pip installation for Python and machine-learning workflows on Linux and Windows, tarballs, and a Linux runfile installer. Choose the method AMD specifies for your OS and device in the relevant ROCm installation guide; the available method and package commands depend on the selected release path.
For Python-based machine learning, use AMD’s current PyTorch installation guide. It uses a virtual environment and an AMD-hosted ROCm wheel index. Follow the live guide’s command variant for your OS and GPU architecture rather than copying a command from an older Radeon/Ryzen page or another ROCm release. The ROCm and framework versions must match the supported combination you selected.

Verify that PyTorch detects the AMD GPU
After installation, activate the virtual environment where you installed PyTorch, then run:
python -c "import torch; print(torch.cuda.is_available())"AMD’s guide expects this to print True when the installation is working correctly. Despite the torch.cuda name in the command, this is the documented PyTorch check for ROCm GPU availability.

Confirm which device PyTorch sees:

python -m torch.utils.collect_envIf availability is false or the device name command fails, first compare your installed ROCm, PyTorch, Python, driver, OS and GPU against the selected compatibility entry. Make sure the commands are running in the same environment where the ROCm-enabled PyTorch package was installed. Do not infer model compatibility from a successful GPU-detection check alone.

Check support for the model or inference engine
Once PyTorch sees the GPU, follow the AMD instructions for the specific application you want to use. The compatibility matrix establishes framework-level version support; it does not prove that a particular model package, quantization format, custom kernel or inference workflow is supported. Check the application’s AMD and ROCm requirements as well as the framework entry in AMD’s matrix.
