You can turn prerecorded podcast audio or video into a repeating YouTube Live broadcast by adding a media source or VLC playlist in OBS, connecting OBS to YouTube with a stream key, then starting the encoder and going live in YouTube Studio. For an uninterrupted 24/7 stream, the computer and internet connection running OBS must remain available; a cloud service is an alternative if you do not want a home computer to run continuously.
Before you set up the stream
- Confirm YouTube Live access. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check the channel’s Live Control Room ahead of your planned start. YouTube’s current guidance also says livestreamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Get permission for everything you rebroadcast. You need rights to the podcast episodes, music, artwork and video for the intended public livestream. Owning a copy or using OBS and VLC does not grant rebroadcast rights. YouTube advises creators to ensure stream materials do not infringe others’ content: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Plan your format. A prerecorded audio playlist can use a static visual; a microphone, camera, capture card and hardware encoder are not required for that setup. Decide whether to repeat one file or cycle through several items, and whether shuffled playback is appropriate.
Choose a playback source in OBS
One file: Media Source
Use OBS’s built-in Media Source when one local audio or video file should repeat. Open or create a scene in OBS, add a Media Source, select the file, and enable looping in the source properties. This is the simpler choice for a single episode or track.
Several files: VLC Video
Use VLC Video when you want a playlist of episodes or tracks, or need the option to shuffle. Add a VLC Video source to the scene, add the files to its playlist, and set Loop Playlist to restart after the final item. Shuffle Playlist controls whether the order is randomized. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Check the OBS Media Sources documentation for supported formats and source properties.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Keep the playlist files available at the paths OBS expects for the entire broadcast. If a file is moved or a drive disconnects, OBS may not be able to play it. Test transitions between every playlist item, not just the first one.

Configure audio and test the scene
- In OBS, open Settings → Audio and choose the audio devices you intend to use. For a prerecorded show, check that the media source itself is producing audio and that no unwanted desktop or microphone input is being captured.
- Watch the OBS audio mixer while the media plays. The meters should move when the intended audio is playing; silence or unexpected movement is a reason to check the source, device selection and mute controls.
- Make a short local recording or private test stream. Listen for clipping, silence, excessive background audio and abrupt gaps between files; also check that the visual stays as intended.
- Confirm the playlist loops or shuffles as configured, including behavior at the end of the final item. OBS’s Quick Start Guide explains its audio setup and mixer.
Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, then enter its title, visibility and other stream details.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. In OBS, open Settings → Stream; choose YouTube if that option is available, or configure the server URL and key supplied by YouTube.
- Treat the stream key like a password. YouTube describes it as the address and password for the stream: someone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS. See Manage live stream settings.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming preview and check the stream health in Live Control Room. When the preview and details are correct, click Go live in the Live Control Room. Starting OBS sends the feed; it does not by itself complete the YouTube go-live step for this workflow.
Set output quality to match your connection
In OBS, open Settings → Output and Settings → Video to configure the encoder and output. YouTube’s encoder guidance for the listed workflow recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, CBR rate control, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. Its bitrate recommendation depends on resolution, frame rate and codec; for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for other output combinations.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends available outbound bandwidth about 20% above the stream bitrate. Other network use and instability can still interrupt delivery.
- Choose a sustainable resolution and frame rate. For a podcast with a static image, selecting a high frame rate or resolution may add bandwidth and encoder load without improving the audio. Use a setting your computer can encode consistently and your upload connection can sustain.
- Test with representative content. Check the preview and stream health with actual audio and any movement in the visual. A brief test with an empty scene may not reveal encoding or bandwidth trouble.
- Monitor after launch. Watch for dropped frames, stream-health warnings, audio interruptions and playlist stalls. YouTube’s streaming tips cover connection stability and testing.
Plan for a 24/7 run and its replays
With OBS running locally, the computer, source files, OBS process and internet connection all need to remain available. Prevent sleep or automatic shutdown, keep the media files accessible, and make sure the machine can run the chosen encoder continuously. A home network interruption or computer restart can stop the feed; YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a single 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete, automatically available replay. If replay matters, plan local recording or divide programming into sessions, then check how the resulting broadcasts appear on your channel.

Troubleshoot common problems
- OBS cannot find or play the VLC playlist: Verify VLC is installed, that its 64-bit or 32-bit version matches OBS, and that the files still exist at their listed locations. Reopen the source properties and check the playlist entries.
- The preview has video but no sound: Check the media source’s audio settings and OBS mixer meters, confirm the source is not muted, and inspect the selected audio devices under Settings → Audio. Test a known-good file.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Confirm the stream URL and key match the stream currently open in Live Control Room. If the key was reset or exposed, replace it in OBS. Start the encoder and wait for the preview before selecting Go live.
- The feed drops or stream health is poor: Reduce output bitrate, resolution or frame rate to a stable combination; check available upload capacity and other network use. YouTube recommends roughly 20% bandwidth headroom above bitrate. A wired connection can be a troubleshooting option, but it cannot guarantee that outages will stop.
- The broadcast stops when you expected a replay: Check the channel’s resulting video and remember YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Use local recording or separate sessions when a complete replay is important.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification, recent live-streaming restrictions and activation status in YouTube Studio. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep running without leaving OBS and a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded content, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It does not stream from a camera and is for YouTube.
