To make a Steam game run more smoothly on a low-end PC, first check the game’s system requirements, then reduce avoidable background load and lower demanding in-game settings one at a time. If stuttering or low frame rates persist, use Steam’s performance monitor and a resolution test to identify whether the likely limit is graphics, CPU, or system memory before changing drivers or buying hardware. The right settings depend on the game and your PC; smooth does not necessarily mean 60 FPS.
1. Check what the game and your PC require
Before changing settings, note the game, your CPU, GPU, installed system memory (RAM), operating system, display resolution, and whether the problem is consistently low frame rate, intermittent stutter, or both. Compare your PC with the game’s system requirements on its Steam store page. Without the game and hardware details, there is no reliable way to predict a frame rate or choose a specific upgrade.
Use the same scene or activity for each comparison. Change one setting at a time and note the frame rate, stutters, and whether the image remains acceptable. This makes it easier to tell which change helped rather than guessing.
2. Free up resources used by other programs
Close applications that are not needed while you play, such as a browser, recording software, or other game launchers. Steam Support recommends removing unnecessary startup programs and stopping unnecessary running applications; on Windows, use Task Manager, and on Mac, use Activity Monitor. See Steam Support’s performance troubleshooting guidance.

Compare the game in the same scene before and after closing apps. Do not close software that you need for the game, your system, or accessibility.
3. Lower graphics settings in the game
Open the game’s video or graphics settings and lower demanding options in small steps. Resolution and shader or overall quality settings are useful starting points. Check the same scene after each adjustment, balancing frame rate against image clarity. Steam notes that manually changing video settings can improve FPS, but no single setting works best for every game.

If you use integrated graphics
Steam’s software guidance recommends low shader detail and windowed mode for systems with integrated graphics. Treat windowed mode as a game-specific option, not a guaranteed improvement: compare it with the mode you normally use and keep whichever works better on your PC.
If the game offers resolution scaling or an upscaler
Availability and image-quality trade-offs vary by game and GPU. Try an in-game option only if it is available, then compare performance and image clarity in the same scene. There is no universal gain or quality outcome to expect.

4. Use resolution and Steam’s monitor to diagnose the bottleneck
Lowering resolution can help performance and also serves as a diagnostic. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting advises testing a lower resolution: if the frame rate does not improve, CPU performance may be the limit. If it improves materially, graphics rendering is a plausible constraint. Neither result proves the cause by itself; game simulation load and other bottlenecks can also matter. See Steam Support’s hardware troubleshooting steps.
Steam’s in-game performance monitor can help you inspect frame rate, CPU and GPU load, and memory use. Open the Steam overlay while the game is running and look at the performance information available for your system. Interpret the indicators together with the resolution test rather than treating one reading as a diagnosis.

When system memory may be contributing to stutter
If available system memory is near its limit, close unnecessary applications and compare again. Steam says that low memory can lead to the game or Steam swapping data to disk, which may cause repeated frame-rate hitches. More RAM is worth considering only if memory pressure is evident and your exact PC supports the memory you plan to install. See Steam Support’s guidance on memory-related performance issues.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Update graphics drivers and check Windows 11 graphics settings
Get drivers from the GPU maker
Steam warns that outdated drivers can affect performance even when a PC meets or exceeds a game’s listed video requirements. Check the official driver channel for the graphics hardware in your PC—NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel—and use the driver intended for that device. Avoid third-party driver bundles. Steam’s performance troubleshooting page provides vendor links and context.

Choose a GPU for the game in Windows 11
If your Windows 11 PC has more than one GPU, Microsoft lets you set a per-app graphics preference, including “High performance.” Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game, open its options, choose the appropriate preference, and save. The label and available choices depend on the hardware and Windows configuration.
In the same Graphics settings area, Windows 11 offers “Optimizations for windowed games” for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless-windowed. Microsoft says the feature can move supported games to a newer presentation model, with lower frame latency and support for display features. Restart the game after changing the setting. These features apply only to supported Windows 11 configurations; see Microsoft Support’s explanation of windowed-game optimizations.
6. Use launch options only when the game documents them
Steam launch options change settings before a game starts, but many are specific to a game or its engine. Steam notes that an earlier DirectX version can perform significantly better on older graphics hardware in applicable cases; that is not a universal setting or command to copy into every game. Use only launch options documented by the game’s developer or applicable Steam guidance, and remove one if it causes problems. See Steam Support’s performance troubleshooting guidance.
7. Decide whether an upgrade is justified
Do not choose a GPU, CPU, or RAM upgrade based on the “low-end PC” label alone. First use the resolution test and Steam’s performance and memory indicators to identify a likely constraint. If memory is consistently near its limit, check the PC or motherboard documentation for supported memory capacity, generation, and form factor before considering a compatible RAM upgrade. If graphics remain the likely limit, verify compatibility and requirements for the exact PC before selecting hardware.
There is no specific performance target, required driver version, universal launch command, or compatible part that can be identified without the game and PC specifications. To tailor the settings or upgrade advice, provide the game name, CPU, GPU, installed RAM, operating system, and current resolution.
