You can run a continuous YouTube stream from a Mac mini by sending video through an encoder such as OBS Studio: create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, enter its stream URL and key in OBS, then test the feed and start the event. For pre-recorded video that should loop unattended, a Mac-based setup means keeping the Mac, encoder, and internet connection running; a cloud service is an alternative when you do not want a computer at home to stay on.

Choose a Mac-hosted stream or cloud playback

A Mac mini is the host; an encoder converts and sends the video to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guide describes it this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” OBS Studio is one software option listed in YouTube’s encoder directory, and OBS provides macOS installation instructions. Those sources do not specify a minimum Mac mini model, a performance benchmark, or a guaranteed maximum stream duration.

Use a local encoder if you need to control a live scene or produce a feed on the Mac. For unattended playback of existing recordings, compare local playback with cloud streaming: YouTube’s encoder directory describes Gyre as cloud-based continuous streaming for pre-recorded video without a dedicated PC and lists Upstream.so as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. Those are vendor descriptions, not independent reliability tests. Confirm current availability, terms, content rights, and costs before choosing.

Check channel eligibility before setup

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, according to YouTube Help.
  • First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. Enable it well before the planned start.
  • Decide whether the stream should be public, unlisted, or private, and prepare a title and description in advance.
  • Use video and audio you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s live rules and copyright enforcement still apply to pre-recorded loops; permission to play a recording elsewhere does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it on YouTube.

Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube

  1. Install OBS. Download the macOS version from the OBS Project and follow its Mac installation instructions. The cited OBS Mac installation page is dated May 29, 2021, so check the current OBS release and macOS compatibility when installing. You do not need a new Mac mini solely because the title says Mac mini; the available sources do not establish a required model or configuration.
  2. Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, and use the Stream tab in Live Control Room. Set the stream title, privacy, and other available stream details. YouTube’s interface may change, so follow the current prompts in Studio.
  3. Copy the connection details. In Studio, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the YouTube streaming settings for your encoder. Keep the key private: anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio’s live stream settings.
  4. Prepare the video source. For a pre-recorded stream, add the recording or playlist as a source in OBS and verify that it plays continuously as intended. For a live production, arrange the required camera, screen, audio, and scene sources. A webcam or microphone is optional hardware, not a prerequisite for a stream that uses existing video and audio.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room, then check the picture and listen to the audio. Confirm or start the live event in Studio when prompted by the current workflow.
  6. Verify the viewer-facing stream. Open the published watch page on another device or browser. Check that the correct video is playing and the audio is audible before leaving the setup unattended.

Choose YouTube output settings

YouTube’s encoder settings are targets, not a speed-test result or a guarantee that a particular Mac or internet connection can sustain the stream. The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations on its settings page, accessed in 2026.

Setting YouTube guidance
H.264 at 1080p30 Recommended bitrate: 10 Mbps
H.264 at 1080p60 Recommended bitrate: 17 Mbps
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate)
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
Stereo audio bitrate 128 Kbps
Stereo audio sample rate 44.1 KHz
Transport RTMPS recommended

Choose the resolution and frame rate for the actual material and available upload. If the connection cannot sustain the target, use a lower resolution or frame rate and test again. Do not treat the video bitrate as the required internet-plan speed: network overhead and other household or office use matter. Test the upload connection while the Mac is in its intended location, and monitor stream health in Live Control Room.

Test the continuous run, not just the first minute

YouTube recommends preparing the encoder in advance, testing with similar audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. For a 24/7 plan, also test operational conditions that may interrupt playback; these are prudent checks, not guarantees from YouTube or OBS.

  • Run the complete video or playlist with its real audio and output settings.
  • Check what happens if OBS closes, the Mac restarts, or the network drops. Confirm the steps needed to restart the encoder and restore the stream.
  • Watch the stream from a separate device and verify that viewers see the intended feed.
  • If you need a local recording as well, check that it is being created and can be played back.
  • Monitor stream health during the test and after launch; a successful preview does not guarantee that power, network, or software interruptions will not occur later.

Plan for YouTube’s live archive limit

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that an uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete archive: the reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish that outcome or a universal Mac mini procedure for rotating long broadcasts into archive segments. If you need a replay, plan and test recording and retention separately rather than relying on a long continuous broadcast to create a complete archive.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is looping uploaded recordings rather than controlling a live scene, StreamNeo runs a YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The Mac can be off; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not provide a camera-based live feed.
